Bear-ghan
A cuddly critter : bear on top, blanky on bottom!
Materials:
-11 ozs. Worsted Wt. Yarn (Red Heart Bright Yellow)
-size H hook
-2 plastic safety eyes, or glass eyes.
-Stuffing, polyester fibrefill or wool
-Yarn needle
-Contrasting color yarn for nose and mouth.
-(or plastic animal safety nose)
-1 yard of 1.5 inch decorative ribbon
Size: approximately 30" from top of ears to bottom of
'ghan.
Note: do not join rounds unless indicated, instead mark
rounds with safety pin.
Special stitches:
sc2tog: insert hk in next st, yo, draw loop through, insert hk in
next st, yo, draw loop through, yo draw through all 3 loops on
hook. (aka sc decrease)
Head
- Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6)
- Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around. (12)
- Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st* around. (18)
- Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st* around.

- Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st* around.
(30)
- Rnd 6: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st* around.
(36)
- Rnd 7: *Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st* around.
(42)
- Rnd 8-19: Sc in each st around.
- Rnd 20: (Decrease for neck begins here) *Sc in next
5 sc, sc2tog* around. (36)
- Rnd 21: *Sc in next 4, sc2tog* around. (30)
- Rnd 22: *Sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog* around. (24)
Body
- Rnd 23: Sc in each sc around. (24)
- Rnd 24: Repeat round 5 of head. (30)
- Rnd 25: Repeat round 6 of head. (36)
- Rnd 26: Repeat round 7 of head. (42)
- Rnd 27-53: Sc in each st around.
- End off, work in ends.
Insert eyes in head approximately at Rnd 8.
Stuff head and body with fiberfill.
'Ghan
- Row 1: Fold body in half, flat at Rnd 53, sc across body
through both thicknesses as if one row. Ch 1, turn.(21 sc)
- Row 2: 3 sc in each sc across, 4 sc in last sc. Ch 3,
turn.(64)
- Row 3: In first st (dc, ch 2, sc.) *skip 2 sts, (2 dc, ch
2, sc) in next st*, repeat from * to * across. Ch 3, turn.
- Row 4: In first ch 2 space, work (dc, ch 2, sc). *Work (2
dc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 space. Repeat from * to*
across. Ch 3, turn.
- Rows 5-34: Repeat row 4. End off, work in ends.
- Note: you can make this blanket as long as desired, the
original was designed for a 2 year old, and I wanted it
long enough to cuddle, but not so long it would drag on
the floor if she carried it.
Arm (make 2)
- Rnd 1: Repeat rnd 1 of head. (6)
- Rnd 2: Repeat rnd 2 of head. (12)
- Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 3 of head. (18)
- Rnd 4-21: Sc in each sc around. (18) Leaving a length of
yarn for sewing, end off.
- Stuff arm with fibrefill. Fold arm flat, and stitch
closed. Sew arm firmly to side of bear's body.
Muzzle
- Rnd 1: Repeat rnd 1 of head. (6)
- Rnd 2: Repeat rnd 2 of head. (12)
- Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 3 of head. (18)
- Rnd 4: Repeat rnd 4 of head. (24)
- Rnd 5 & 6: Sc in each sc around. Leaving a
length of yarn for sewing, end off.
- Stuff muzzle with a bit of fibrefill. Sew to bears face
beneath eyes.
Ears (make 2)
- Rnd 1: Repeat rnd 1 of head. (6)
- Rnd 2: Repeat rnd 2 of head. (12)
- Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 3 of head. (18)
- Rnd 4: Repeat rnd 4 of head. (24)
- Rnd 5-7: Sc in each sc around. Leaving a length of
yarn for sewing, end off.
- Fold each ear in half, sew to top of head.
Variation: I also made this a "Bunny-ghan" by making
a longer ear. Simply continue to sc in each sc around for
20 rounds, fold ear in half, then fold in half again, sew flat to
top of head, with ears "lopping" down sides.
Finishing
Using contrasting yarn, embroider nose (on round 1 of muzzle)
and mouth.
Tie ribbon in bow around neck.
Variation: I also made this using a soft baby-weight yarn and
an E hook.
