Next, at age 46, Captain Lambert is given command of the super carrier SARATOGA (CVA-60) operating in the Atlantic and Mediterranean from Nov. 1961 to Nov. 1962.  He was the first non-Naval Academy officer to command a U.S. Aircraft Carrier.

The cold war escalated to a fever pitch when the Soviet Union created the Cuban Missile Crisis during this command.

Would it surprise you to learn that Lambert still flew carrier jets? . . . .
