Carmen Sandiego
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

The mysterious female game character known as Carmen Sandiego has been around for many, many years and has enjoyed almost as much fame and notoriety as many Hollywood stars. That's not because she's especially beautiful, incredibly glamorous, or perpetually half-naked - it's because she's a thief. But Carmen Sandiego isn't just any thief - she's a world-renowned master thief, and she has been pilfering jewels and priceless artifacts from exotic locations all around the globe for well over a decade.

Ms. Sandiego first began her career as the villain in Broderbund's classic educational game, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? In the game, you played a gumshoe detective whose job was to track down Carmen each time she pulled off a heist. When she did, you'd have to travel around the world and try to apprehend her, based on geographical clues you'd pick up along the way. When you caught her, you'd be in line for a promotion. But Carmen always managed to break out of jail, flee the country, and steal another national treasure, so you'd go after her again. The game was so successful that Carmen went on to star in her very own series of Broderbund educational games that branched out into different educational subjects, such as English, math, and history.

Carmen Sandiego didn't just limit herself to committing crimes behind a computer screen, though. In the time that's passed since Carmen stole her first relic, there have been numerous children's novels, board games, and two different television shows (the FOX animated series and the critically acclaimed PBS quiz show) based on Ms. Sandiego's exploits. She has managed to rise from her humble beginnings as an 8-bit crook to being a truly classic computer game character. And she did it her way, not by exploiting herself or her appearance, but by doing what she does best - stealing priceless treasures and leaving the authorities in the dust.
