Panax News
Sep 9th, 2003: To our customers
I'd like to sincerely apologize for the net outages we've had the last couple months. We spent too much time trying to work around an issue that just needed hardware, and capital, that at the time we just didn't have. Being a small grassroots internet service provider keeps us innovative and maneuverable in ways larger providers can't keep up with, but when expensive hardware fails, we sometime flounder for a bit before we can take the steps to make it all right again.

I commend our loyal customer base that's stuck with us through these trying (for everyone!) times, and I really think Panax has a bright future ahead.

First we had bandwidth constraints. Then, when we finally got the bandwidth, it pushed us beyond the limits of our hardware, especially with the untimely explosions of mass email virii and the like, which hit us especially hard. Now we've added the necessary hardware to keep the traffic fluid and stable, and I don't see any problems in the foreseable future.

Thanks again, Panax customers, for your perseverance and patience. We wouldn't be here without you.

Aug 11th, 2003: Mail server problems
My apologies to our customers whom over the weekend did not receive email. We've been having difficulties with our email server, hardware related issues that have plagued the box for a while.

Again, apologies. Mail is moving now, has been since our patch late last night. Mail might be down for a little while late tonight as we replace the box, so apologies in advance. Thanks!

Mar 27th, 2003: Mail Server Update.
Well it's been a busy week at Panax. We've put in a great deal of effort tuning the new MailScanner. I think we've got it setup in a way to provide the best balance of performance and functionality. A large number of Panax customers are subscribed to various mail lists, and a large number of those lists are in the anti-spam blacklists we were using in our MailScanner. This was causing some of our customers to no longer receive the mail they normally receive from these lists. This was a problem of course, and the solution we used to fix it was to no longer check incoming mail against these blacklists. We are still checking incoming mail against open relays, which blocks a large amount of spam, and the MailScanner is still checking all incoming and outgoing mail for virii.

On the topic of virii, I'd like to make sure everyone knows that this MailScanner system has been put in place to reduce the amount of spam and virii that pass through our network. It's not meant as a way to stop all spam and virri. Panax recomends that all our customers install and use the proper anti-virus software for their computer. The virus status of your computer is up to you.

Mar 21st, 2003: Mail Server Changes
In our continuing effort to bring our customers the best service we can, starting this week our mail server system now includes a spam/virus filter. This filter will dramatically reduce the amount of unwanted spam and should stop most all virii from passing through our network.

Some of you may have already received emails with {spam} or {virus} tags in the subject line. These tags notify you of the state of the message you sent or received as it was run through the filter. If you've received a message from our filter telling you that you have sent an infected email, please update your anti-virus software and check your system. If you do not have any anti-virus software on your system we recommend that you install one. Any anti-virus software package will do. In fact there are even a few good free packages out there.

As with any change to a system as complex as our network, it will take some time to fine tune things. A limited number of false positives are sure to happen. If you're not receiving mail you expect to receive (daily mail lists, etc) or if you're sure our filter is in error, please let us know. In fact send me the message directly brett@5foot2.com.

--- Brett
