At 1000 Saturday, 31 March 1973 the USS Hanson DD 832 was decommissioned after 28 years of service. On 18 April 1973 the Hanson was sold to the Republic of China Navy (Taiwan) and became the Liao Yang DD 921.
The Hanson, as the Liao Yang, was converted to an area air defence ship under the Wu Chin III program. This upgrade invovled the installation of the H930 Modular Combat System (MCS) with a Signaal DA08 air search radar (employing a lightweight DA05 antenna) and a Signaal STIR missle control radar directing 10 box launched Standard SM-1 surface-to-air missles (two twin in "B" position, two triple facing either beam aft). The system can track 24 targets simultaneously and attack four with an 8 second response time.
The ship is also fitted with an OTO Melara 76mm, two Bofors 40mm/70, and a Mk 15 Block 1 Phalanx CIWS. The amidships ASROC launcher was retained and integrated with the H 930 MCS. The SQS-23 sonar has been upgraded to the H standard using a Raytheon solid-state transmitter. In 1994 the Ta Chen datalink was installed.

Dear Sir: I am delighted to find this web(http://www.usshanson.org/yang.htm) and feel so impressive because I came from DDG-921(former DD-832).I have just demobilized from it 3 months ago and served for 2 years long.As you can see,I have some DDG-921 current photos and I'm glad to share with you.
I was in charge of guns and ammunition as a petty officer. Some of my friends are atill in duty of OTO76mm/62,Bofors40mm/70 Guns, and Phalanx CIWS,and we used to get the most excellent award of shooting. Nowadays,DDG-921 still cruises on the Taiwan Straits and is going to accept refit in engine system. It still can sail to reach 27nautical miles.
I'll be proud of I came from DDG-921 forever!!
