ATI's CATALYST 3.8 Released

Posted on Wednesday, 8 October, 2003 by Ryszard

Another day, another driver. I wouldn't usually report a driver release, but this one is different. With a new wave of ATI hardware about to hit the HEXUS Review Dungeon and the fact the new driver adds some cool stuff, it's worth a news post.

You can get the new driver (full install with everything, and split downloads for dialup users) here. Windows XP users only for that link, if you use another OS, hit here to choose it.

Also Accelenation have a new article up on the new driver, that shows you what it can do. Here's a snip.
One of the new features of the Radeon 9x00XT was the ability to safely overclock the graphics core depending on the ASIC temperatures without voiding your warranty. ATI calls this their “Overdrive” feature which is currently only supported by the 9800XT by the Catalyst 3.8’s, support for the 9600XT is planned for the next Catalyst release. Overdrive is a feature that’ll overclock your core clock up to 432 MHz if temperatures permit. Despite temperature conditions, Overdrive will not underclock your VPU below the stock 412 MHz clock.
Check out their article here.

New Review @ HEXUS

Yikes, it broke out of the database a day earlier than I thought it would. I baked a high performance cake for this article. Take one P4 3.2EE, one VapoChill XE and a volt modified EPoX motherboard and bake at 1.52V for 2 days. The result?
For those looking to get the most out of a Pentium 4 processor, especially up in the giddy heights of 4GHz operation with a 3.0, 3.2 or 3.2 Extreme Edition, VapoChill XE will suit your obviously deep pockets.

Again, thoroughly recommended for the well off overclocker, especially the Pentium 4 runner. 4000MHz is a lovely figure. The overclocking world awaits Asetek's Athlon 64 mounting hardware with baited breath, I'm sure they wont disappoint.
Check it out in full here. 4GHz and 2MB of L3 is enough to make anyone giggle.

Wednesday News

In preparation for an upcoming article, I've been scoping out the 9800XT reviews from the usual suspects. Kyle and the boys at the [H] have done a better job than most, check out their look here.

While it's not a company that usually flies under the HEXUS radar, Transmeta, a favourite technology company of mine, has chosen Fujitsu for it's 90nm process transition. It'll be using 90nm in it's new CPU's, dubbed Efficeon, as soon as possible. Remember that Intel moves to 90nm with Prescott. EETimes have a good piece on that here.

Sticking with Prescott news, I've seen in a sneaky price list that it may launch on October 26th at 3.4GHz and push the current range down a notch on the price ladder. Looks like good news for early adopters and those of deep pockets, as well as benefiting the rest of us looking to grab some performance on a budget. With Prescott launch dates unconfirmed and possibly not until next year, maybe it's just a 3.4 Northwood. We'll soon see!

Lastly, the boy wonder has released part 2 of his look at the new releases from ATI and NVIDIA. If you can stomach 60 pages (good god!), put on your thinking cap and slide this link up your well lubed browser. Looks like the 52.14 Detonator XP's are pretty handy.

Tuesday News

I'm going to try a different style of news today, the current mass roundup format isn't too exciting. So here goes, a bunch of mini roundups and commentary throughout the day, we'll see how it goes.

AMD launched a set of their own support forums yesterday, you can find them here. Maybe I'll get an answer as to why my FX-51 isn't multi unlocked on its motherboard. Worth a look.

The Inquirer is running a couple of interesting stories and editorials just now. The first, on the HL2 code leak, covers what's happened in The Inq's usual style. They've also got a piece on Intel's current Xeon plans, some of which we hinted at earlier in the week. Find those here.

One of my favourite tech writers, MS over at Lost Circuits, has an interesting article on thermal compounds, including some cool composite stuff called Carbon Black, read more here.

Lastly, I saw on Slashdot yesterday that IBM have started producing mini airbags to protect their laptop hard drives against high impact shock. PCWorld are carrying the original story here.

New Review : AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Clawhammer, VIA K8T800, nForce3 150

Posted on Monday, 6 October, 2003 by Justin

A mammoth review for you good people to read today. Tarinder has been playing with nForce3 150 and VIA k8T800 chipsets along with AMD's 3200+ Clawhammer CPU
"It's far too early to say which chipset complements the Athlon 64 better. What's clear is that AMD has risen to a new performance plane with the Athlon 64. Multiplier unlocking (AMD permitting) and the ability to toggle DRAM timings are two of the features we're looking for in subsequent BIOS revisions. All in all, we're pleasantly surprised by the Athlon 64's performance, and we have been receptive to VIA's K8T800 design. The nForce3 150, though, seems to be a little barren by comparison. That's not an observation that's normally directed at NVIDIA. Our initial examination of the Athlon 64 reveals great promise. EPoX and Shuttle have both done well to market boards so quickly. We'll reserve our judgment of the K8T800 and nForce3 150 until a few more examples have passed through the labs. EPoX and VIA has the upper hand so far, though. Effortlessly smooth at 2.3GHz / DDR460."

New Review : Tyan Tachyon G9800 PRO-M 128MB

Posted on Sunday, 5 October, 2003 by Justin

Another review from Tarinder has escaped from the database, this time it's the Tyan Tachyon G9800 PRO-M 128MB.
"Tyan has to be congratulated on producing a non-reference 9800 PRO card, yet we somehow cannot stop the nagging feeling that it could have gone further with the G9800 PRO-M. Give us the same model with pre-inflated clocks for both VPU and memory, a bigger, more comprehensive bundle that included a few cutting-edge games and the Tyan Tachyon G9800 PRO-M would have been an almost perfect card. As it is, it's another decent addition to the Tyan range. Solid but unspectacular."
