Talk radio is enjoying a resurgence in Australia, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, where the market leader in both cities is a talk station (2GB and 3AW respectively). Wind the clock back just four years, and it was pop music stations 2DAY and FOX-FM on top. Here in Brisbane, the future of talk radio looks promising.
4BC's ratings might have dropped in the most recent survey, but that station is enjoying its most successful period in years. Here at 612 ABC Brisbane, we now have more listeners tuning in each week than any other AM station (including 4KQ, 4BC and 4BH).
But, are the "young people of today" interested in talk radio? Well, in a word, "yes". Bruno Bouchet and Adam Dimarco present a Sunday afternoon talkback and news/discussion show on Brisbane's newest community radio station, i-1197.
Bruno and Adam are year 12 students (at Marist Brothers, Ashgrove). So, shouldn't they be into pop music, rather than talkback? Spencer Howson spoke with the two presenters of i-1197's "Speak Up!" show.
