Islam Spreading in the UK

Tomorrow the largest mosque in Western Europe, built to accommodate up to 10,000 Muslims, opens in southern England.

Ahmadiyya Muslims built the mosque in Morden, funded entirely by voluntary donations from individuals.

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya community, will lead prayers Friday at the Baitul Futuh Mosque, which has a 50-foot dome.

"It's a second historic occasion for the Ahmadi Muslims to add to the heritage of British culture and to the presence of Muslim community in Britain," said Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, president of British Ahmadis.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community was founded by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in Qadian, India, in 1889. In a little over a century, the community has spread to 174 countries, with an estimated 200 million followers.

UPDATE: “Ahmadiyyat” is a Pakistani Muslim sect, not Saudi, although they have much in common ideologically. Here’s a page at their official site that defends Ahmadi Muslims against the charge (made by other Islamic groups) that they are “agents of Israel:” Ahmadis and the State of Israel.

The AI-Nahzah of 12 July 1948 wrote:

We have received a tract which comprises an address of Al-Syed Mirza Mahmud Ahmad Sahib which he delivered in Lahore. In this address he has urged the Muslims to unite and has drawn attention to the need of solid and effective efforts towards rescuing Palestine from the grip of Zionist criminals and has asked the people of Pakistan to render immediate help to the Palestine Arabs. Reminding the Muslims of their common allegiance to the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and arguing from verses of the Holy Quran the speaker has urged them to organize themselves to with-stand the onsets of the Zionist criminals who are being supported by the United States and Communist Russia in pursuance of their interests and special purposes. He has asked the Muslims not to display weakness or distress, but to keep in mind their obligations of Jihad for the upholding of Islam and Muslims.

This is a passing glimpse of the great effort that the Head of the Ahmadiyya Movement, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II and the devoted member of the Ahmadiyya Movement, Ch. Muhammad Zafrulla Khan, put forth in opposing the setting up of the State of Israel. Indeed the truth is that except the Ahmadiyya Community no one else did any solid work in this sphere. Yet, instead of appreciating this effort, our Pakistani Muslim brethren have charged us with being the agents of Israel. Is this Islamic justice? How will these people face God?

in this context one argument that is put forward by our opponents is that as the Ahmadiyya Movement maintains a missionary center in Israel, the Ahmadis are agents of Israel. If this has any substance in it then it is not only the Ahmadis who are to be blamed. Even today in Israel there are several hundred thousands of Muslims. They would also have to be declared agents of Israel. Then there are several Christian missions that are active in Israel. They will also have to be denounced as agents of Israel. The number of Ahmadis in Israel is very small in comparison with the number of Christians and other Muslims in Israel.

The fact is that the Ahmadiyya Mission in Palestine was established before the coming into existence of the State of Israel. At the time of partition it was decided by the Ahmadiyya Movement to continue its mission in Israel for the propagation of Islam and the education and training of the Palestinian Ahmadis who had been left in Israel along with other Muslims. The Ahmadis believe that it would be difficult to resolve the problem of Palestine satisfactorily in the end without converting all the Jews to Islam. Besides, it is the duty of all Muslims to present the message of Islam to every non-Muslim. In respect of the non-Muslim population of Palestine, the Ahmadis alone are discharging this obligation. The Holy Quran and the ahadees nowhere forbid inviting the Jews to accept Islam or lay down that Muslims should not enter their territory for the purpose of informing them of the excellencies of Islam. It should be remembered that Islam is a universal faith and its message is addressed to all mankind alike. Under the directions of the Holy Quran, the Ahmadiyya Community carries out its obligation of propagating Islam all round the world including the State of Israel. This cannot be open to any objection.

Spreading Saudi Fundamentalism

Even the Washington Post can no longer deny that we may have a little teensy problem with Wahhabi Islamist infiltration of American Muslim organizations and mosques and schools: Spreading Saudi Fundamentalism in U.S. (Hat tip: Nelson Ascher.)

On Aug. 20, 2001, Saleh Ibn Abdul Rahman Hussayen, a man who would soon be named a minister of the Saudi government and put in charge of its two holy mosques, arrived in the United States to meet with some of this country's most influential fundamentalist Sunni Muslim leaders.

His journey here was to include meetings and contacts with officials of several Saudi-sponsored charities that have since been accused of links to terrorist groups, including the Illinois-based Global Relief Foundation, which was shut down by U.S. authorities last year.

He met with the creators of Islamic Web sites that U.S. authorities contend promote the views of radical Saudi clerics tied to Osama bin Laden. And among the imams on his travel schedule was a leader of a small religious center tucked into a nondescript office building in Falls Church, the same site used for a time by the spiritual leader of a group of area men indicted in June as suspected jihadists.

On the night of Sept. 10, 2001, Hussayen stayed at a Herndon hotel that also housed three of the Saudi hijackers who would slam an aircraft into the Pentagon the next day, though there is no evidence that he had contact with them.

Hussayen, who was unavailable for comment, is accused of no wrongdoing. The purpose of his meetings remains, in fact, a mystery.

But his travels form a road map to some of the religious and charitable groups in America dedicated to the spread of Wahhabism, the rigid and puritanical strain of Islam dominant in Saudi Arabia. In recent months, authorities have begun to focus on the role of radical Wahhabi clerics and organizations, including some that Hussayen came to see here in exhorting followers to violence.

Backed by money from Saudi Arabia, Wahhabis have built or taken over hundreds of mosques in North America and opened branches of Saudi universities here for the training of imams as part of the effort to spread their beliefs, which are intolerant of Christianity, Judaism and even other strains of Islam.

British Shari'a Watch

Muslims in the UK are building a parallel universe shari'a legal system under the noses of the British: British Muslims lean toward Islamic courts. (Hat tip: Jheka.)

LONDON -- Two years ago, Mahmood Khawel, a 34-year-old financial consultant and devout Muslim from the Midlands city of Peterborough, wanted a quickie divorce.

So he went to an Islamic court in London where he performed the divorce ritual known as talaq. Standing before a judge, he declared three times in succession that he was repudiating his wife. Judge Omar Bakri Muhammad, an expert in Shariah, the sacred law of Islam, granted the divorce on the spot.

But now Khawel and his wife have changed their minds. They want to reconcile. Last week, Khawel was back in Muhammad's courtroom, asking for an annulment of the talaq.

"OK, brother, don't worry," Muhammad told him. The judge explained that while some schools of Islamic law accepted a triple repudiation performed all at once, most preferred that the repudiations be spread over two or three menstrual periods. On that technicality, Muhammad said he could release Khawel from the original talaq.

None of this would be recognized in any British civil court, according to legal experts, but for growing numbers of Britain's 1.6 million Muslims, Shariah is the law.

During the past decade, a parallel universe of Islamic jurisprudence has sprouted across Britain. Shariah courts can be found in almost every large city. In London, different Muslim immigrant groups--the Somalis in Woolwich, for example--have established ad hoc courts that cater to their community's needs.

CAIR and the IAP

A very interesting entry in Daniel Pipes’s weblog: CAIR and the IAP.

For anyone who doubts the tight connection between the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)and the Islamic Association for Palestine, go to http://iap.org and note what turns up: a blank page with the title "CAIR List Server." But go there quickly, as IAP will no doubt eliminate this page shortly [Ed. note: Daniel Pipes wrote this on Sept.26, but the page still shows the CAIR title as of this writing.]. Then, to find out what the IAP is, go to http://www.iap.org.

For an even closer, and even more revolting look at what IAP is about, see this page at their site: Zionism and Nazism. (Hat tip: Paul Banks.)

The Jihad Line is Jumpin'

New revelations in the investigation of American Muslim Council leader Abdurahman Muhammed Alamoudi: Who, and What, Does He Know?

...prosecutors yesterday disclosed a wealth of new evidence aimed at showing that, at a minimum, Alamoudi has privately sympathized with terrorists. In a secretly recorded conversation after the 1998 bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa, Alamoudi called the attacks by Al Qaeda “wrong” but then added: “What is the result you achieve in destroying an embassy in an African country? I prefer to hit a Zionist target in America or Europe ... I prefer, honestly, like what happened in Argentina ... The Jewish Community Center. It is a worthy operation.” (The reference was apparently to the July 18, 1994, car-bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 86 people.) U.S. Judge Theresa Buchanan ordered Alamoudi held without bail after the hearing.

Equally intriguing, NEWSWEEK has learned, is other evidence recently obtained by prosecutors from German police files showing that Alamoudi also had meetings in the fall of 2000 with Mohammed Belfas, an elder from the Islamic community in Hamburg who had multiple ties to key figures in the September 11 terror attacks. Belfas—who once shared an apartment with Ramzi bin al-Shibh, one of the orchestrators of the September 11 attacks—had come to the United States in the fall of 2000 along with a young Muslim acquaintance from Hamburg.

From the outset, federal investigators have suspected there was far more to the trip by Belfas and his associate, Agus Budiman, than sightseeing. After the September 11 attacks, German police raided Belfas’s Hamburg apartment and found pictures of the two young Indonesian Muslims in front of the Pentagon and Capitol Hill, a discovery that led some to believe they were on a scouting mission for possible targets for the September 11 attacks. They also discovered multiple connections between the two men and several leaders of the September 11 plot, including bin al-Shibh and Mohammed Atta, the ringleader of the hijackers.

And that’s not all. Here’s an AP story that’s so poorly written it’s hard to tell whether there’s a connection to the Alamoudi case, but apparently another prominent Muslim organization has been linked to terrorist activity. The government filed documents today alleging financial connections between the American Muslim Foundation and Maher "Mike" Hawash’s Portland Seven jihad group, several of whom have already pleaded guilty: U.S. Activist May Have Been Money Courier.

Other documents filed in court by the government show that the branch of the American Muslim Foundation in Portland, Ore., provided money to Patrice Lumumba Ford and to Ahmed Bilal. Ford is awaiting trial on charges of plotting to fight the United States in Aghanistan. Bilal has pleaded guilty to similar charges.

Hatzalah Saves Lives

Hatzalah is an Israeli emergency response organization, comprised of volunteers who arrive after terrorist attacks, accidents and other emergencies long before the official organizations do, driving their personal vehicles into dangerous situations—sometimes while gun battles are still going on—in an attempt to save lives. They were on the scene and tried to save little 10-month old Shalhevet Pass when a Palestinian terrorist shot her in the head, in the Avraham Avinu neighborhood of Hebron on March 26, 2000.

Yoni Tidi, an Israeli security expert who is known to many of our readers as a frequent guest on the Hugh Hewitt radio show, is collecting donations for Hatzalah and has made an MPEG video presentation on their work available at his web site. Breaking WMD News

Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Siyassah is reporting that Kuwaiti security forces have intercepted smugglers with $60 million worth of Iraqi chemical and biological weapons—on their way to Europe: Kuwait foils Iraqi-WMD smuggling attempt.

The pro-government daily reports Kuwaiti security forces foiled an attempted smuggling of $60 million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads from Iraq to an unnamed European country.

Citing an unnamed security source, Al-Siyassah said the smugglers had been under surveillance since they arrived in Kuwait and were arrested "in due time."

No details about the suspects, possible accomplices, where the weapons came from in Iraq and how they were acquired were disclosed.

The smuggled arms will be turned over to an FBI agent by Kuwaiti Interior Minister Sheik Nawwaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah, according to the paper. No time was given for the news conference where this handover is slated to take place.

Hamas Foils Zionist Plot (Or Did They?)

It looks like our lizardoid plot to distract Hamas with a false flag operation has worked beautifully: Hamas: Arab State Foils Israel Assassination Bid. (Hat tip: zululizard.)

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Palestinian militant group Hamas said on Wednesday an Arab state had foiled an Israeli plot to assassinate several of its political leaders abroad.

Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal said the security services of an Arab country foiled the plot "several weeks ago," but declined to name the country or say who was targeted.

"Hamas has received information that cells of the Israeli Mossad intelligence apparatus have started acting in some Arab countries to target Hamas political leadership," Nazzal said in a statement to Reuters.

"An Arab country...captured a Mossad cell preparing to undertake assassination operations," he added. More than one person had been on the target list.

Nazzal said the accused plotters included Arab and foreign nationals but not Israelis. Israeli authorities had no immediate comment on the accusation.

"(Israel's) failure in assassinating Hamas leadership in the Gaza Strip pushed it to attempt its destruction in foreign arenas," he said.

The plot, he said, would not intimidate Hamas.

UPDATE: A few more details at the Jerusalem Post, who report that the Mossad is being oddly silent about this story. Hmm. Israel mum on reported capture of Mossad cell.

Israeli security officials remained curiously mum over reports Wednesday that a cell of Mossad agents have been arrested in an unnamed Arab country for conspiring to assassinate Hamas leaders including the group's general secretary abroad, Khaled Mashal. ...

Nazzal initially made the claim on the Islamic website Islam Online, saying their leaders have been warned to take maximal precautionary measures in their movements.

"While Israel persists in its attempts to assassinate Hamas leaders in and outside Palestine, the movement has been able to thwart such attempts by adopting strict security measures," Nazzal said.

He added that Mashal has significantly reduced his public appearances as precautionary measures, and that the group's leaders have ceased all use of cellphones and other communication devices, for fear of being traced.

Senior members of Hamas, as well as other terror groups, have in the past few years resided in Syria.

Israel had sent a cell of Mossad agents on a bungled mission to kill Mashal in 1997. The mission ended a disaster leaving Mashal alive, the agents in Jordanian custody, drove a stake through Jordanian-Israeli relations and ended in the release of Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin from Israeli prisons.

Nazzal adamantly refused to say which in country the Mossad agents were arrested, but Palestinian sources said the unnamed country was Syria. Israeli sources believe it may have also happened in Qatar. Hamas sources in Gaza confirmed the report, but also said they could not say which country hold the Israeli agents. The Gaza sources stressed that the alleged Mossad agents were held only for "planning assassinations," and not caught in an actual assassination attempt.

The Terrible Fate of Nazimedia Spies

Last week I noted an Indymedia UK “article” that urged their fellow Morlocks to infiltrate a proposed LGF meeting in London, so they could attempt to discover the terrible truth about this evil, nefarious place known as LFG.

But the would-be Nazimedia spies have discovered it’s not so easy to fool the lizardoid army, as Cox & Forkum illustrate. Bwahahaha!

Yum! That was a tasty snack! Bring me another Morlock!

Christian Soldier, Muslim Soldier

Here’s an eye-opening column from Michelle Malkin about our religious double standards, and political correctness run amok: Christian soldier, Muslim soldier.

Six months ago, Jack Moody tried to send his son, Daniel, a care package containing a Bible study and other Christian religious materials. Daniel is a 21-year-old Army National Guardsman serving in the Middle East. He had written home requesting spiritual support while he risked his life abroad. The literature his dad packed included Christian comic books. But when Daniel's dad approached the post office in the family's hometown of Lenoir, North Carolina, he was told he would not be allowed to send the items.

According to U.S.P.S. postal bulletin 22097, section E2, Moody was forbidden from sending "any matter containing religious materials contrary to Islamic faith or depicting nude or seminude persons, pornographic or sexual items, or non-authorized political materials." The postal clerk informed Moody that the Christian contents of the package might be considered offensive to some Muslims overseas. The policy was initiated during the first Gulf War. ...

Contrast Daniel Moody's treatment with that of Capt. James Yee. The Muslim convert, who studied in terror-sponsoring Syria and attended an Islamic cultural center run by the terror-friendly Saudi government, was given free rein by the U.S. Army to administer to the souls of al Qaeda and Taliban enemies at Guantanamo Bay.

Yee brought the detainees prayer beads and religious books, facilitated prayer services, and assisted them with Muslim food preparation. And he received lavish, fawning profiles in the "diversity-" and "tolerance-" obsessed mainstream press. Now, he has been charged with sedition, aiding the enemy, spying, espionage and failure to obey a general order. Treason charges may be added. Yee exploited our bent-over-backwards solicitude toward Muslims in the military by allegedly using his access to smuggle out diagrams of the detainees' cells and lists of the names of the detainees and their interrogators. More than half of the armed forces' Muslim chaplains were trained by a terror-linked, Saudi-subsidized institute while military leaders blindly sung the praises of multiculturalism.

US Must Give More Money to Arabs

A panel of Arabist appeasers, led by a crony of James Baker (who was a featured speaker at the lunatic Arab think tank, the Zayed Institute for Coordination and Followup) has discovered that all we have to do to win the love and respect of the Arab world is give them more money. A lot more money: U.S. Must Counteract Image in Muslim World, Panel Says.

Mr. Djerejian, director of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University, said he tried to pick a bipartisan cross-section for members of the panel. Among them are Shibley Telhami, a scholar at the University of Maryland, and John Zogby, an expert on public opinion in the Arab world.

The group's major recommendations, besides creating a new White House director of public diplomacy, were to build libraries and information centers in the Muslim world, translate more Western books into Arabic, increase scholarships and visiting fellowships, upgrade the American Internet presence, and train more Arabists, Arab speakers and public relations specialists.

Oh, and one more thing. In addition to the money, and letting lots more students from Arab countries enter the US, it would probably help if the US stopped supporting Israel and permitted the Arab world to push the Jews into the sea. Of course, they can’t come right out and say that, though.

The Bush administration, for example, started a program called "shared values" last year, a series of television commercials showing that Muslims in the United States lead lives of dignity and equal rights. The advertisements were suspended after several Arab countries refused to show them.

Many in the administration were privately critical of the commercials, agreeing with Arab and Muslim spokesmen who said they were irrelevant to Muslim concerns about American policies toward Iraq and Israel.

The advisory panel said that it recognized that American policies might well be the root of the problem...

Jew-Hate Festival at Rutgers Going Ahead (?)

The Palestine Solidarity Movement is still planning to hold their Jew-hate festival at Rutgers University, although they have been denied use of campus facilities. It’s anyone’s guess where they’ll put all those frothing, rabid antisemites, but they’re actively soliciting people to register anyway: The Rutgers Palestine Conference is ON and GOING STRONG!!

Maybe a few more exclamation points would help.

Islamic Battered Woman Syndrome

Amina Lawal, the Nigerian woman who was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery and recently acquitted after an international outcry, now says she was never afraid and that her experience did not affect her belief in Islam—because she knew that shari'a is fair.

Cradling her nearly 2-year-old daughter, Lawal yesterday drew a red veil repeatedly across her face as she spoke.

"The trial did not affect my faith in Islam, because I know that sharia makes room for fair trial," said Lawal, her head and body also draped in bright print cloth, in the style of northern Nigeria's Muslim women.

"It is a fair procedure, and so I was never afraid throughout my trial," she said.

Palestinian NGOs Refuse Anti-Terror Agreement

Palestinian non-governmental organizations and social welfare groups have refused to sign an agreement that they will not give money to terror gangs.

RAMALLAH [MENL] -- Palestinian non-government organizations have refused to sign a U.S.-sponsored commitment that they will not transfer funds to individuals or groups that engage in attacks against Israeli civilians.

Palestinian sources said social welfare groups within the Palestinian Authority as well as independent NGOs have organized a campaign against signing a so-called anti-terror clause. The sources said the United States has demanded that Palestinian social welfare groups sign a commitment that they will not transfer money to those deemed terrorists.

So far, the sources said, about 30 NGOs have declared that they would not sign the anti-terror commitment. Many of the groups obtain funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development and American philanthropies.

Earlier this month, representatives of 29 NGOs in the area of the West Bank city of Bethlehem met and issued a statement that they would not cooperate with a U.S. AID demand not to transfer funding to any individual or group deemed terrorist. The meeting was attended by PA security and intelligence officials. The Interior Ministry regulates NGOs in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Egyptian Mufti Urges US Soldiers to Be Traitors

The newly appointed Egyptian Mufti (one of the highest clerical positions in Islam), Sheikh Dr. 'Ali Gum'a, issued a fatwa shortly after the beginning of the Iraq War forbidding Muslims in the US military from fighting other Muslims.

"A Hadith says: 'A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he does not abandon him and he does not give him away.' ... The Muslim soldier in the American army must refrain [from participating] in this war, and if he cannot, he must serve in the [logistic] ranks, and if he cannot, he must submit his resignation. If he is forced to [fight] and is among the combating ranks, he is forbidden from killing a Muslim with his weapon; if he kills him in error he must pay reparation. If he kills him intentionally, he has committed the sin of killing a Muslim intentionally."

Sheikh Gum'a has also gone on record supporting Islamic orthodoxy that says Muslims can agree to anything, sign any treaties, and then break the agreements as soon as they are strong enough:

" The one with the authority to declare Jihad is the imam who has under his [command] a regular army capable of waging a war of regular armies. When the Prophet was in Mecca, he had no army, and therefore he could not declare Jihad ... that is, when there was a state of enmity between Muslims and the polytheists and there was harm caused to the believers by the polytheists, all the Prophet ordered his comrades to do was to say: 'You have your religion and we have our religion.'

"[But], when the army in Al-Madina was formed, there was land, there was a regime, and there was the capability to fight, the Prophet launched war ...

"The Prophet taught us that warfare can exist only under a flag, and that the one with the right to declare Jihad is the one with the flag. The one with the flag in our day is the president of the state, in every one of the [Muslim] countries. He, and the leaders at his side, are capable of assessing whether this war is beneficial or whether it leads to loss, whether the war will protect the Muslims or whether it will harm them ... "

This Egyptian hate-monger also (unsurprisingly) supports and encourages suicide bombings and shaheed attacks:

"The one who carries out Fedaii [martyrdom] operations against the Zionists and blows himself up is, without a doubt, a Shahid because he is defending his homeland against the occupying enemy who is supported by superpowers such as the U.S. and Britain."

This is the mindset of our enemies, expressed by a “spiritual leader” who now reigns at the very highest level of Islam.

The United States gives Egypt more than $2 billion a year in foreign aid, and they appoint an evil bloodthirsty freak like this as their Mufti.

Islamists at Gitmo

The Guantanamo Bay investigation keeps getting more disturbing. The latest person arrested, civilian translator Ahmed Fathy Mehalba, tried twice to qualify as a military intelligence interrogator.

The latest man arrested was identified as Egyptian-American Ahmed Fathy Mehalba, 31. He is a civilian who formerly served in the Army and twice started but failed to complete a military intelligence course to become an interrogator, two defense officials said on condition of anonymity.

Mehalba was medically discharged from the Army in May 2001 and later hired by a private defense contractor to be a translator at the prison in Guantanamo Bay, they said.

Officials said they had no further information on why he didn't complete the courses, nor what the medical discharge was for.

It’s becoming clear that Islamists have been making a concerted effort to infiltrate our military and security organizations.

Days of Awe

At Power Line, the Big Trunk has a fascinating account of a meeting between President Bush and a group of rabbis right after Rosh Hashanah: Days of awe: Meeting with President Bush. (Hat tip: rizzo.)

"[President Bush] talked about his concern of increasing anti-Semitism in Europe, and how he's trying to work with them to eradicate it. He said that we have to fight hard all the isms. Then the Hillel rabbi there talked about the swatiska that Rutgers had recently and the shouting down of pro-Israel speakers on various campuses. He said that he knows about some of that, and that he is keeping abreast of it, that it's a concern. He spoke often about peace and freedom, the importance of optimism and the love of America. He mentioned several times the speech he gave June 24, 2002, where he laid out his principles of fighting terrorism and said the key is to continue to stick to our values and not deviate from them.

"A rabbi mentioned a book he was reading about how the Saudis have continued to profess to be our friends, but support radical Islam all over the world. He asked the President what he thought about it. The President said, 'You basically stated the question. It's not just the Saudis. We're dealing with every country in the Middle East that way except the one democracy, Israel. We have to try to reform them and help them be true democracies.'

Read it all.

Muslim Chaplain School: Possible Ties to Al Qaeda

One of the Islamic schools relied on by the Pentagon to certify Muslim chaplains has been under investigation for possible financial ties to Al Qaeda—for the past 18 months. (Hat tip: Sean II.)

For the last six years, the Pentagon used an unaccredited school in Leesburg, Va., to train and certify most of its 13 Muslim chaplains. But in the last 18 months, the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences also has been part of a federal investigation into possible financial ties to al-Qaida, ABC reported.

One of the chaplains mentioned in correspondence between the Pentagon and the school is Army Capt. James Yee, who was arrested by military authorities last week over possible security breaches at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba.

In an April 2000 letter obtained by ABC, the school's executive dean, Ahmed Alwani, wrote to the office of the Army's Chief of Chaplains saying while Yee was never a student at the school, the academic qualifications he had earned elsewhere were the equivalent of courses offered at the facility.

Eighteen months? Did the feds fail to communicate with the Pentagon about this investigation, or was this a massive sting operation?

Unfortunately, I don’t think we can realistically rule out the former possibility.

Al-Amoudi Helped by Libyan Embassy in Ottawa

When the story of the arrest of American Muslim Council leader Abdurahman Alamoudi (aka Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi) broke yesterday, I had a question: since travel to Libya is banned by the US, how did he get there without being noticed?

The answer, according to Stewart Bell in the National Post: he was helped by the Libyan embassy in Ottawa, as part of a plot to transfer hundreds of thousands of dollars to US Islamic groups from the Libyan Islamic Call Society’s “Jihad Fund:” Libyan embassy accused in money plot. (Hat tip: rizzo.) Interesting that AP and Reuters wire stories make no mention of the Ottawa embassy connection or of a “Jihad Fund,” even though they do name the Libyan Islamic Call Society—so they must have been aware of it.

A criminal complaint unsealed yesterday claims the Ottawa embassy issued visas to Abdurahman Alamoudi, an Ethiopian-born American affiliated with several Muslim organizations being investigated for terror financing.

The visas allowed Mr. Alamoudi to travel to Libya without obtaining the necessary approval from the U.S. government. During the trips, he allegedly secured large donations from Libya's "Jihad Fund."

Mr. Alamoudi was caught in London last month trying to board a plane to Damascus carrying US$340,000 in cash, which he obtained from the Libyans in a clandestine drop, U.S. authorities allege.

Canada established full diplomatic ties with Libya in 2001, despite continuing concerns about Tripoli's sponsorship of terrorism. Canada now operates an embassy in Tripoli and Libya has a mission in Ottawa.

UPDATE: Since the media is totally falling down on the job (or crippled by political correctness) reporting this story, here’s the actual 29-page affidavit concerning the charges against Alamoudi. (PDF format.)

Worst Idea of the Day (So Far)

Egypt recently released from prison 900 members of the Islamic terror group al-Gama'a al-Islamiya, who plotted the murder of Anwar Sadat—to give moderate Islamists a helping hand: Egypt Frees 900 Muslim Militants. (Hat tip: Let’s Roll.)

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt released 900 members of an Islamic militant group that killed 58 tourists in 1997 and helped plot the murder of president Anwar Sadat, security sources said on Tuesday.

Analysts said that freeing so many members of the outlawed al-Gama'a al-Islamiya (Islamic Group), whose jailed leaders renounced violence six years ago, would help the movement gain a political voice and could strengthen the hand of more moderate Islamists in the Arab world's most populous country.

Oh. Well. Since they renounced violence, I guess it’s OK.

Arabs Whine, Seethe at UN

Arabs Criticize Alleged WMD in Israel.

At the U.N. General Assembly on Monday, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt charged that the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency was holding back from criticizing Israel.

It is "unacceptable that Israel's possession of such weapons should remain a reality that some prefer to ignore or prevent" the international community from dealing with, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said.

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa, whose country has been accused by Washington of possessing weapons of mass destruction, said it was regrettable that some level accusations at Arabs while they overlook the Israeli arsenal.

Saudi Prince Saud al-Faisal said Israel's nuclear program was a threat to security and stability in the Middle East. He expressed surprise that the International Atomic Energy Agency was intensifying monitoring of countries which had signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty while "we see that it continues to ignore the rejection of Israel in not joining the treaty."

In related news, six-year old Timmy Smith criticized his father John for having a loaded .45 pistol. “Why does daddy get to have all the cool toys? I want a .45 too! Waa-aaa-aaa!” said little Timmy, lying on the floor and kicking his feet.

Got 10 in Britain

Ten from Algeria held in Britain under anti-terrorism laws.

LONDON (AFP) - Ten men, believed to be Algerians, were being held under Britain's anti-terrorism laws following dawn raids in London and Manchester, a Metropolitan Police spokeswoman told AFP.

Six of the men were arrested at residences in north, east and southeast London, while the others were taken into custody in northwestern Manchester, she said Tuesday.

"The operations are part of ongoing and extensive inquiries by the Anti-Terrorist Branch into alleged terrorist activities," she said. "Searches are currently being carried out at all residential premises."

The men were identified only by letters A through J, with four of those in London, and one in Manchester, described as being in their 30s. No ages were available for the others.

Third Guantanamo Arrest

Another Arab man has been arrested in connection with Guantanamo Bay; this time a civilian translator carrying CDs and papers that may have contained classified information: Guantanamo translator arrested. (Hat tip: Thom.)

The FBI was called to make the arrest after U.S. immigration officials found a man identified as Ahmed Melhalba carrying CD-ROMs and paper documents allegedly related to the detainees.

Melhalba is the third person arrested in what appears to be a widening investigation of possible espionage at the base where suspected al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists are held.

Melhalba is described as a civilian translator, and was arriving at Logan on a flight from Egypt.

Officials emphasize that Melhalba is not a member of the military and is being held by civilian law enforcement.

A Bush administration official said agents from the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not have any advanced intelligence on Melhalba.

The official said that when Melhalba [was] asked what was on the CDs he was carrying, he said "videos and music," but on examination the CDs were found to contain "information that appeared to be classified related to Gitmo."

Antisemitic Graffiti in Beverly Hills

Over the weekend, homes and stores in Beverly Hills were defaced with anti-Jewish and anti-American graffiti: Beverly Hills homes and stores defaced in graffiti attack.

About 15 homes and stores were vandalized over the weekend with graffiti attacking various religious, political and minority groups, police said Monday.

The graffiti was found early Sunday on upscale homes, two clothing retailers and a Pottery Barn store, which included statements hostile to President Bush and Jews, police Lt. Mitch McCann said.

No synagogues, mosques or other religious institutions were damaged and the vandalism lacked any specific patterns, McCann said. Police were investigating the incidents and no arrests had been made, he said.

The attacks, which targeted sites between Sunset and Santa Monica boulevards, coincided with the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah.

UPDATE: A reader in Los Angeles informs us that, contrary to the report above, synagogues in LA were indeed defaced over Rosh Hashanah weekend:

I can attest to the fact that there was indeed graffiti spray painted on walls of at least two synagogues that I personally passed by on Sunday on Pico Blvd. One was Aish HaTorah at Pico and Doheny and the other was Bnai David a few blocks east on Pico. I did not see what had been written and on Sunday Bnai David had covered it with a sheet so that people going to shul for the second day of Rosh Hashanah would not have to see it.

Bush != Hitler

A post by The Elder at Fraters Libertas demonstrates beautifully how dishonest and downright stupid the loony left’s Bush=Hitler nonsense really is:

A true appreciation of the scale and scope of the horrors perpetrated by the Nazis should give pause to those who label Bush 'Hitler' and call Ashcroft a Nazi. I believe that it is insulting to the memories of the victims of the Nazi regime to use those labels with so little thought. If Bush were like Hitler, post 9/11 events would have unfolded quite a bit differently. Muslims would have been beaten in the streets of the US, some to death. Mosques would have burned. Muslim shops would have been looted. Legislation would have been passed stripping Muslims of all rights and within months camps would have been built. Muslim men, women, and children would begin to disappear into them never to be seen again. The Democratic party would have been outlawed along with all other political parties and most of its leaders killed or sent to camps. The media would be taken over and run by the state and any attempts at dissent ruthlessly crushed. Michael Moore would not be writing books. He would have been strangled with piano wire and left hanging from a meat hook (a heavy duty, reinforced meat hook to be sure). A vicious war would have been waged against all Muslim nations. Kabul, Tehran, Baghdad, Damascus, and Riyadh (for starters) would have been turned to sand. All oil fields in the Middle East would have been occupied. Citizens in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan would be bombed, brutalized, driven from their homes, and eventually killed to make room for the repopulation of those regions by Texans (Bush's volk). I could go on and on with this but you get my point.

An Encounter with Madeleine

European Parliament Members Cheer Jew-Killer

In his closing argument at his trial for terrorism and murder, Marwan Barghouti boasted that he was proud of his role in the Palestinian intifada—as members of the European Parliament cheered.

Dozens of Barghouti's supporters attended the trial and cheered at the end of his speech. They included members of the European Parliament from Italy and France...

UPDATE: It gets worse; Barghouti not only boasted about the intifada, he mocked Israeli prosecutors, saying that his trial was meaningless because he would soon be released due to Israel’s suicidal propensity for “good will gestures:” Palestinian Ends Defense in Murder Trial. (Hat tip: NC.)

...today he closed his own defense in a yearlong trial that has become a focal point for Israelis and Palestinians with a mocking prediction that he would be released soon in a prisoner exchange.

"Put together a commemorative book, because this is history," he told the Israeli prosecutor, Devorah Chen, according to the reporter from Reuters, one of those admitted to the courtroom under a pool arrangement. "I'll be out soon enough." The remarks, the report said, were greeted with cheers from a group of European lawmakers attending the trial.

Ancient Roman Flunks Reading Comprehension

A certain imitation ancient Roman is at it again. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for the apology (but not holding my breath) for his utterly baseless and idiotic allegation that I deleted one of his comments, when in truth the ancient Roman simply has a serious reading comprehension problem.

Joseph Wilson: Moonbat

Here’s a tremendously revealing talk by former Ambassador Joseph Wilson at the “Education for Peace in Iraq Center,” in which Wilson demonstrates a level of moonbattitude that has to be heard to be believed. Among other outrageous and self-contradictory statements that wouldn’t be out of place in an Indymedia post, Wilson says that “warmongers” are assholes, and that the real purpose of the Iraq War was to benefit Israel.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page for the section about Wilson; here is a direct link to the MP3 recording of Wilson’s talk. (Hat tip: Oscar Jr.)

And by the way, an interesting footnote; at the bottom of the HTML source of this web page is a section that has been hidden from view for some odd reason, listing the sponsors of the Education for Peace in Iraq Center:

Arab American Institute, American Friends Service Committee, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Focus on American and Arab Interests and Relations (FAAIR), Friends Committee for National Legislation, American-Arab Anti-Descrimination Committee, American Muslims for Global Peace and Justice, Church of the Brethren Washington Office, Mennonite Central Committee USA-Washington Office, Muslim American Society, NETWORK, Pax Christi, Peace Action, Veterans for Peace, Voices in the Wilderness, and Women's Action for New Directions.

(And yes—I made a copy of the source code.)

Novak: "What's the Fuss?"

Robert Novak said today that nobody in the Bush administration called him to reveal the identity of Joseph Wilson’s wife: Columnist Refuses to Reveal Source of Iraq Report.

"What's the fuss about?" asked Novak, a Chicago Sun-Times columnist who is also a conservative commentator on CNN.

"There is no great crime involved here... The fuss is made on this because it involves (Republican President George W.) Bush," he said on CNN. "I do not reveal confidential sources."

The Justice Department is considering starting a full investigation into the leak. A leak of classified information is a federal crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The controversy centers on the disclosure in one of Novak's columns that Valerie Plame, the wife of Joseph Wilson, a former U.S. ambassador to Gabon, was an undercover CIA operative specializing in weapons of mass destruction.

"Nobody in the Bush administration called me to leak this," Novak said, saying the information was disclosed to him while he was interviewing a senior Bush administration official.

Honor Killing in London

In October 2002, fearful that his 16-year old daughter Heshu was becoming too “Westernized,” Abdalla Yones stabbed her repeatedly, then slit her throat.

This happened in London: Father jailed for 'honour killing'.

Heshu, who was described as popular and fun-loving, planned to run away from home after starting a relationship with an 18-year-old Lebanese teacher.

In a letter to her parents, apparently showing she planned to run away, Heshu wrote: "Bye Dad, sorry I was so much trouble.

"Me and you will probably never understand each other, but I'm sorry I wasn't what you wanted, but there's some things you can't change.

"Hey, for an older man you have a good strong punch and kick.

"I hope you enjoyed testing your strength on me, it was fun being on the receiving end. Well done."

Yones was a political refugee who fled Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq 10 years ago.

The court heard that after repeatedly stabbing his daughter and slitting her throat, he cut his own throat and jumped from a third floor balcony.

Scotland Yard described it as a "brutal honour killing" - a reference to the practice of women being killed by male relatives to redeem the family name.

Detective Inspector Brent Hyatt said: "There was nothing, nothing at all 'honourable' about her murder.

"After hacking his daughter to death, Mr Yones has attempted every defence, from psychiatric, and diminished responsibility to extreme provocation, in order to save his own skin."

He added that Yones first claimed al-Qaeda members had broken into the flat, murdered Heshu and then attacked him. He only admitted murdering her last Monday.

The BBC spends an inordinate amount of verbiage making sure their readers know that this is a cultural practice; variations of the word “culture” appear five times in the article.

Scotland Yard believe there were 12 'honour killings' in the UK last year and said they were not restricted to Muslims, but also occurred in Sikh and Christian families.

A specialist police unit is researching the practice but police say only a handful of people believed 'honour killings' were an appropriate cultural response.

This “handful” of people apparently includes an overwhelming majority of the Jordanian parliament, who recently rejected new laws against honor killings because they would “violate religious traditions.”

Al-Amoudi Update

The charges against Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, an official of the American Muslim Council, have to do with making undisclosed trips to Libya, and accepting large sums of money from the Libyan mission to the UN: Man Charged in Violating Libya Sanctions.

A criminal complaint unsealed Monday alleges Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi violated U.S. law by accepting, either personally or through the American Muslim Foundation he heads, $10,700 from the Libyan mission to the United Nations and by failing to disclose numerous trips to Libya on his passport.

Such actions are illegal under U.S. economic sanctions imposed in 1986 following terrorist bombings tied to Libya in Vienna and Rome.

Al-Amoudi, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Ethiopia, made an initial court appearance in Alexandria, Va., but neither he nor his attorney would comment on the charges. He was arrested Sunday at Dulles International Airport after a flight from London, officials said.

The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and up to $250,000 in fines, prosecutors said.

And get a load of this allegation:

A federal affidavit filed to support the complaint alleges numerous links between al-Amoudi and Libyan entities. Al-Amoudi, 51, has contended that he was constantly looking for money for the Islamic advocacy group he heads and sought out Libya because it has renounced terrorism.

In August 2003, the affidavit said, customs officials in Great Britain found $340,000 in sequentially numbered $100 bills in al-Amoudi's luggage. Al-Amoudi, who was not charged in that incident, told the officials that he received the money from an unknown individual at a London hotel after visiting the government-controlled Libyan Islamic Call Society based in Tripoli.

Al-Amoudi Arrested in Terror Probe

Here’s more information about the arrest of American Muslim Council leader Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi; this is beginning to sound like quite a big catch: Muslim Activist Nabbed in Terror Probe.

WASHINGTON - A Muslim activist whose Virginia home was searched as part of a federal investigation of terrorist financing was arrested shortly after arriving back in the United States, law enforcement officials said.

Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi was taken into custody at Dulles International Airport on Sunday after a flight from London, officials said. The charges against al-Amoudi were expected to be unsealed following an initial court appearance Monday.

Al-Amoudi's home in Falls Church, Va., was among those searched in March 2002 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as part of a federal probe into financing of terrorist groups such as al-Qaida, Hamas and Hezbollah.

Michael A. Mason, chief of the FBI's Washington field office, said authorities had developed a significant amount of information about al-Amoudi's activities and that the initial charges brought in the case might be only the beginning.

"He has been under investigation for some time," Mason said.

Pentagon Jihadis

An interesting coincidence in this new column from Daniel Pipes; just as we note the arrest of Muslim leader Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi (in the entry immediately below), Pipes identifies the group al-Amoudi founded as one of those that helps Islamists infiltrate the US government: Pentagon Jihadis.

The Defense Department responded last week to the chaplain's arrest by defending its hiring practices. Only under external pressure, notably from Sens. Chuck Schumer and Jon Kyl, did it agree to reassess them. Even then, the Pentagon insisted on reviewing the appointments of all 2,800 military chaplains - rather than the 12 Muslims among them.

Political correctness run amok! Which Christian or Jewish chaplains would be accused (as the Washington Times has reported of their Muslim colleague Yee) of "sedition aiding the enemy, spying, espionage and failure to obey a general order"? By pretending not to see that the enemy emerges from one source, the authorities dilute their focus, render their review nearly meaningless and endanger security.

The U.S. government needs to use common sense and focus on militant Islam. It should consider such steps as:

* Breaking off contact with organizations (like the Islamic Society of North America and the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veterans Council) that place Islamists in government jobs.

*Suspending presently employed Muslim personnel who got their jobs through those institutions until their loyalty can be confirmed.

* Working instead with anti-Islamist Muslim groups, such as the Islamic Supreme Council of America for Sunni Muslims and the American Muslim Congress for Shi'ites.

* Confirming that government-employed Muslims do, as many of them swore under oath, "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." A mechanism is needed to identify employees with an Islamist outlook and expel them from government service.

Muslim Leader Arrested by FBI

Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, a board member of the American Muslim Council and a founder of the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veteran Affairs Council, has been arrested by the FBI.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A man affiliated with at least two American Muslim groups has been arrested on criminal charges, federal law enforcement officials said on Monday.

They confirmed a report by Al Jazeera, the Arabic satellite channel, that Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi has been arrested. They declined to give details of the charges against him.

Muslim activists described him as one of the founders of a group called the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veteran Affairs Council and a board member of another Washington, D.C.-based group called the American Muslim Council.

The officials said the arrest took place over the weekend, and that details about the case were expected to be released later on Monday.

French Shari'a Watch

The grand French experiment of incorporating Islam into a secular society enters a new phase with the opening of the first French madrassa Muslim high school.

The goal of the school, which began its first term this month, is to provide Muslims with an alternative to public school education, like those that French Catholics, Protestants and Jews have long enjoyed.

That may be the French goal. But one of the goals of the Union of Islamic Organisations in France, a radical group linked to the militant Muslim Brotherhood, is to teach women their place:

The six boys in the class were dressed in unremarkable casual clothing.

But the four girls had covered their hair and necks with well-secured scarves, a practice normally banned in public schools.

They hid the shape of their bodies under dark-coloured knee-length coats and pants.

Indonesian Shari'a Watch

Indonesia edges toward the dark ages, as the justice ministry considers a plan to criminalize oral sex and homosexuality—and sorcery. (Hat tip: Andjam.)

The ministry is drafting an amendment to the country's criminal code to include acts not currently categorised as crimes but considered morally unacceptable.

These include cohabitation, oral sex, extramarital and non-marital sex, sorcery aimed at hurting other people and homosexual sex, spokesman Sukartono Supangat said.

"It's still in its early stage. We're still collecting input from various parties and experts," he said.

He said in addition to Dutch colonial law, the proposed amended criminal code will also adopt Islamic law, international conventions and tribal laws.

The draft, which is still being debated, proposes that a couple found guilty of cohabitation be punished to up to two years in jail. A man who impregnates a woman but refuses to marry her could spend a maximum five years in prison.

Sodomy and oral sex would be punishable by between three to 12 years in jail and homosexual sex would be liable to punishment of between one and seven years.

A "witch doctor" or his client found guilty of using black magic to hurt other people could spend up to five years in jail. Supangat said ministry experts are still debating ways to obtain evidence of such acts.

Arab Propaganda Machine Attacks Dershowitz

Anti-Israel automatons are barraging Amazon with negative reviews for Alan Dershowitz’s new book The Case for Israel.

Street Scene in Gaza

I’m beginning to believe something is changing at the New York Times; an unflinching slideshow like this, featuring photos of Palestinian death cult glorification, would never have been part of their web site a year ago during the reign of Howell Raines: Street Scene in Gaza.

We Are All Jews

An excellent essay by former CIA director James Woolsey, who opens with a question that I am often asked: We are all Jews.

I sometimes get asked these days if I’m Jewish — it’s my neoconish views on defense and foreign affairs, I suppose. For a while I would just say, "No, Presbyterian,‘ but I’ve started saying instead, ’Well, I anchor the Presbyterian wing of JINSA (the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs)."

What with anti-Semitism growing in Europe and a hideous variety thereof metastasizing in the Middle East — not to speak of the American Left’s (and a small part of the Right’s) hostility to Israel, which sometimes veers off into anti-Semitism — it seems to me our Jewish friends could use a bit of solidarity these days. Today, the first day of Rosh Hashana, celebration of the Jewish New Year, is as good a time as any to explain why.

It’s not only the other two great Abrahamic religions, Christianity and Islam, that owe a substantial debt to Judaism, it’s the world as a whole. The reason is that between three and four millennia ago something happened in the Sinai among a tribe of refugees from Egyptian oppression that introduced the world to the concept of the rule of law — the idea that the law is not the whim of, but rather has its source above, those who rule.

Read it all.

Ascher's Obituary for Said

An eloquent obituary for Edward Said, one of the world’s most determined and industrious apologists for Arab terrorism, from Nelson Ascher at EuroPundits.

His greatest success was to have coined the very expression "Orientalism", making it work, like similar terms (fascist, racist, communist), as an insult that, shutting up those with a different point of view, allows its users to avoid any discussion.

One year later, in 1979, he published his other « classic », « The Question of Palestine », a book the purpose of which was to narrate the tragedy of his people but which touches historical truth only tangentially, at best. Among the many lies with which this deformed view of the past is built, the most scandalous is the mysterious disappearance of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hadjj Amin al Huseini (1893-1974). The main leader of what Said calls Palestine and of its revolt, in 1936-39, against British rule, the ally of the Nazis who wanted Hitler to help him exterminate the Jews of Haifa and Tel Aviv, the personality that dominated, between the 20s and the 60s, the life of the local Arabs, taking them from catastrophe to catastrophe, makes only one very brief appearance in the whole volume. It is as if a history of the US or Italy, covering the same period, simply omitted the names of FDR or Mussollini.

For two long decades, until the day when the Al Qaeda atrocities, demoralizing his apologetic view of the Islamic world, occasioned his final eclipse by his nemesis, Bernard Lewis, Said kept a powerful and evil hold over many intellectuals. And, though below such euphemisms as the “creation of a secular bi-national state where Jews and Arabs would live democratically together” what really lurked was his mad dream of abolishing Israel, something that would result in the extermination of its “non native” population, the real victims of his ideas were first and foremost his own countrymen whom he helped to guide towards new disasters.

Front Line Voices

LGF reader “Connecticut Yankee” points out a new project by Frank J., a blog dedicated to publishing news from Iraq by the soldiers who are actually there, putting their lives on the line: Front Line Voices.

Since, as the saying goes, perception is nine-tenths of reality, those who control what we learn about the war in Iraq and other conflicts have an immense power. They can spin a victory into a failure, and a perceived failure in the fight against tyranny can only strengthen the resolve of tyrants.

It has increasingly been the complaint of many troops that the picture that the media is painting of the progress in the War on Terror is far from reality. The mission of this site is to get out the full story by posting first-hand accounts as written by men and women who have actually been to Iraq and Afghanistan. There is no editing or commentary by those who run this site, and we will print any letter or story submitted by a legitimate source who has served overseas. Our only goal is to offer you the opportunity to read these stories and to find out what the reality is.

The House Where Nobody Lives

The table is still set for Rosh Hashanah dinner in the house where 7-month old Shaked Avraham lived.

Two days after a shooting attack, in preparation for a funeral, an Israeli volunteer from the Orthodox Jewish emergency organization ZAKA cleans blood from the entranceway to the settlement home which was the site of the killing of an infant and a man during a family holiday dinner, in Negahot, a small settlement near the West Bank town of Hebron, Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003. According to reports, around 21:00 Friday, soon after the start of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year holiday, a Palestinian from the Islamic Jihad group armed with an M-16 slipped into Negahot, where about 30 religious families live in houses and trailer homes on two barren hilltops. The attacker knocked on the door of the home, and shot a 30-year-old guest who answered the door, along with a 7-month old girl. (AP Photo/Dan Balilty)

Egyptians Glad to Be Censored

Egyptian artists tie themselves in rhetorical knots, singing the praises of government censorship—because censoring their work keeps them from being murdered by the tiny minority of fanatics who follow a perverted version of Islam: Egyptian Artists See Merit in Censorship.

"We used to protest censorship," said film director Inas el-Degheidi, known for tackling such touchy themes as teenage sexuality and gender equality in Egyptian society. "But now, society has developed in such a way that censorship sometimes works in favor of the artist, shielding him from society."

Interesting take on it; society has “developed.” Substitute the word “devolved” and you’re closer to the truth.

Egypt's censors — and its people — were not always so uptight. In the 1960s and `70s, movies shot here were much more daring, often featuring scantily clad women and more overt references to sex.

"Until around 1975 there was a high degree of freedom," said Ali Abu Shadi, former head of the Egyptian Censorship Board.

"But then religious fundamentalism set in ... and things really have not changed much since then. In the back of every censor's mind is society. The state itself seems to be unable to deal with society right now. The level of conservatism is very high." [Ed. note—What? Doesn’t this guy know it’s just a tiny minority, etc.?]

Over the past 30 years, Egyptians and other Arabs have increasingly turned to Islam after various political and economic movements — Arab nationalism, socialism, capitalism — failed to bring better lives.

More women began wearing headscarfs — and some also donned head-to-toe robes — and more men grew beards as a sign of Islamic piety. In the 1980s and early '90s, the trend turned violent as extremists attacked and burned video clubs and other entertainment establishments that offended religious sensibilities.

Because we all know that nothing says “piety” like burning down a video store.

Peaceful Religion Watch

Once again, we listen to what the spiritual leaders of Islam are saying to the flock. Remember, this is a tiny minority of fanatics preaching a perverted version of Islam’s peaceful message. It’s just a coincidence that they happen to be doing it in the “holiest” cities and the “holiest” mosques of the Islamic world.

From Umar Bin-al-Khattab Mosque in Doha, Qatar, on September 19, 2003:

"O God, strengthen Islam and Muslims, disappoint infidelity and infidels, destroy the enemies of Islam. O God, grant safety to this country and the other Islamic countries. O God, give success to the Muslims' leaders." He goes on: "O God, support Mujahidin everywhere. O God, help our brothers in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kashmir, and Chechnya score victory. O God, destroy the unjust Christians. O God, destroy their rule and disperse them. O God, destroy the unjust Jews. O God, destroy the unjust, usurper Jews. O God, disperse them and shake the ground under them."

From martyr King Abdallah I mosque in Amman, Jordan, supposedly the Arab world’s showpiece of moderation:

"O Lord, deal with Jews for they are within Your power. O Lord, deal with Your enemies everywhere for they are within Your power. O Lord, make their plots destroy them. O Lord, support the mujahidin everywhere, in Palestine and every land where Your name is mentioned."

At the Grand Mosque in Sana'a, Yemen:

"The feet of the sons of Zion desecrate the courtyards and neighborhoods of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Zionists also spread corruption on the blessed land, shed the blood of our Muslim kinfolk, and violate the Palestinian people's honor and sanctities by exploiting the world's hypocrisy and the silence of Muslims and their rulers. Zionists have even decided to expel a leader from his country, just as they have expelled millions of Palestinians from their homeland. The sons of Zion occupy Palestine, and the United States occupies the land of Iraq, while Muslims' rulers ignore the occupation of the two countries. All this takes place because the Islamic nation has abandoned Islam." ...

Concluding, the imam prays to God: "O God, elevate justice and support just people. O God, help our brothers in Iraq, Palestine, and everywhere in the world. O God, relieve them of their ordeal. O God, lift the siege on them. O God, help them score victory. O God, destroy Islam's Zionist and American enemies. O God, shake the ground under them."

This brings us to the absolute spiritual center of Islam, the place toward which all Muslims face when they pray, in the country whose despotic leaders assure us repeatedly that they’re cracking down on the Islamic hate speech—the holy mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia:

"O God, strengthen Islam and Muslims, humiliate infidelity and infidels, protect Islam, and disappoint tyrants, atheists, and the enemies of the nation and Islam. O God, elevate Your religion, Your Koran, and Your Prophet Muhammad's Traditions. O God, grant us safety in our homeland and give wisdom to our leaders." The imam goes on: "O God, support Mujahidin, who fight to elevate Your word and to strengthen Your religion. O God, help them defeat their enemies in Palestine and everywhere. O God, strengthen them and destroy their enemies. O God, destroy the Zionist Jewish occupiers, for they are within Your power."

Iran: We Won't Stop Enriching Uranium

Those wacky Iranian mullahs have a real problem sticking to the script. In spite of their absurd claim that Iran’s nuclear program is only for generating electricity (an absurd claim that our media is happy to report as a possibility), today they defiantly boasted that they would not abandon the program—including their enrichment of uranium, which has only one purpose: Iran Remains Defiant About Nuclear Program.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's foreign ministry said on Sunday Tehran would not give up its nuclear program, including uranium enrichment, despite international pressure to prove it is not developing atomic weapons.

"Abandoning peaceful nuclear activities or enrichment is not something that Iran is ready to compromise on," foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told a weekly news conference.

"The crusade camp that is led by America ... is targeting Islam and Muslims, even if it claims that it is fighting terrorism. ... This campaign is seeking to abolish Islam as a doctrine and a law," the speaker said.

He urged Muslims to "resist this Jewish crusade."

Al-Jazeera spokesman Jihad Ballout told The Associated Press that the station received a telephone call from an unknown person saying they had a recording "that is of concern to you" and suggested the station tape the rest of the phone call. Ballout would not say when the call was received.

Ballout said the station would broadcast only portions of the tape.

"I thus call for jihad (holy war) against this campaign that seeks to end Islam as a doctrine and law and turn us into a herd that follows their world," the speaker said.

Notice how Osama bin Decomposin never seems to show up on any tape with dateable information.

Hamas Hates Buses, Jews

The hatred on display in this photo is only matched by the inept construction of the mock bus these freaks are bravely attacking.

Justice Dept Will Investigate Novak Leak

CIA Director and Clinton administration holdover George Tenet has requested the Justice Department to investigate the Bush White House for the leak of a CIA operative’s name to heavily medicated journalist Robert Novak: Bush Administration Is Focus of Inquiry. The WaPo article about this investigation is thick with unnamed sources, but very light on specifics.

The operative's identity was published in July after her husband, former U.S. ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, publicly challenged President Bush's claim that Iraq had tried to buy "yellowcake" uranium ore from Africa for possible use in nuclear weapons. Bush later backed away from the claim.

The intentional disclosure of a covert operative's identity is a violation of federal law.

The officer's name was disclosed on July 14 in a syndicated column by Robert D. Novak, who said his sources were two senior administration officials.

Yesterday, a senior administration official said that before Novak's column ran, two top White House officials called at least six Washington journalists and disclosed the identity and occupation of Wilson's wife.

Two Blackout Stories

Davids Medienkritik notices a telling difference between the way Germany’s Der Spiegel reports on the Italian power blackout, and the way they reported on the US East Coast blackout. The Italian blackout is blamed on power lines:

SPIEGEL: "ITALY WITHOUT POWER - France rejects responsibility for the blackout. In Italy, the power went out in the early hours of the morning this Sunday, affecting more people than the blackout in the USA. In all likelihood, storms knocked out two major power lines connecting France and Italy. The search for a scapegoat has begun."

...while the US blackout is blamed on the weakness of America:

"BLACKOUT IN AMERICA - The dazed world power was plunged into chaos by the largest blackout in the super power's history: Cities in the dark, planes on the ground, and a nation marching single-file like geese through the darkness. The land of limitless opportunity was shut off by a couple of exploded fuses. A world power between perception and reality - SPIEGEL TV with observations from a country whose lights have gone out."

Oppose the OSU Hatefest

I linked to this page a little while ago, but I’m reposting it because the anti-Israel hatefest at Ohio State University is drawing closer; here is netWMD’s page dedicated to information about the ISM’s links to terror groups, petitions to oppose the “conference,” and an automatic email form that sends to OSU officials and Ohio politicians: netWMD - Oppose PSM Conference at OSU.

Islamic Jihad Killer Released From Jail

The Palestinian Arab murderer who shot a baby girl on Friday was an Islamic Jihad member who had recently been released from an Israeli prison, almost certainly as part of the prisoner releases demanded by Palestinians and inexplicably granted by Israel.

RAMALLAH, West Bank - A follower of Islamic Jihad carried out a weekend shooting attack on a West Bank settlement at the start of Jewish New Year celebrations that killed an Israeli man and a baby girl, the group said Sunday.

Islamic Jihad stop short of claiming responsibility, but group members identified the gunman as Mahmoud Hamdan, 22, a well-known Islamic Jihad activist recently released from an Israeli jail. Hamdan was killed by Israeli troops in the attack.

Edward Said: 1935-2003

Mark Steyn eulogizes Edward Said. (Hat tip: NC.)

It's a generally good rule not to speak ill of the dead. I wish Professor Said had observed it in the days after September 11th when his almost every utterance was an insult to his fellow New Yorkers vaporized a few blocks from his ivory tower. He was a hugely influential academic, who found a way to make the institutional "counter-tribalism" (in John O'Sullivan's phrase) of America's elites pay off for him big time. His bestselling Orientalism is a deeply disingenuous work riddled with factual errors and with a selectivity of focus that negates its main claim. But it remains a stunningly successful example of how to parlay western self-loathing into bestseller status.

Definition of a Target-Rich Environment

In addition to Lebanese detainees in Israel, Hezbollah is demanding that Israel release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. (AP Photo/Adnan Haj Ali).

Unhealthy French Feelings

As if you needed another reason to despise France, here’s a report that a book for religious studies teachers in French public schools has been withdrawn from sale because it contained antisemitic statements: France withdraws textbook. (Hat tip: Merde in France.)

According to Liberation, one passage in the book spoke of "the Jewish people, who have only very distant and politically very suspect links with real Judaism".

Another passage said the Holocaust had prompted "very odd behaviour among Jews and non-Jews, making both very sensitive to any possible resurgence of anti-Semitism. This amounts to an almost paranoid tendency on the one side and often unhealthy guilt feelings on the other."

Unhealthy guilt feelings ... about the Holocaust.

Well. We wouldn’t want to damage the self-esteem of French kids with unhealthy guilt feelings about the murder of six million people, would we?

Pentagon to Review Chaplain Policy

In the wake of the Guantanamo Bay arrests of Muslim soldiers and chaplains, the Pentagon is going to take a good look at their Islamic chaplain policy. Here’s the crux of the biscuit:

Whether the chaplains are Christian or Jewish, Muslim or Buddhist, the military relies on religious groups themselves to recommend and to educate their own candidates. The military says that because of the constitutional provisions that govern the division of church and state, only churches and religious organizations can ordain or appoint their own clergy.

With Muslim chaplains, however, this has proved particularly problematic, especially since Islam has no centralized hierarchy. Most other faiths and denominations have a single authority responsible for chaplains, like the Roman Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services. But in the absence of such an equivalent Islamic authority, the military has relied on grass-roots Muslim groups.

"Because of the separation of church and state, and the decentralized nature of Islam, we are dependent on loosely affiliated Islamic groups to certify the credentials of Muslim clergy in order for them to apply to be chaplains in the military," the Pentagon said in a statement.

Against the Fence

Caroline Glick comes out against Israel’s security fence, and makes a strong case: Against the fence.

Here are three falsehoods told about the fence. First, we are told it will keep us safe. Second, we are told that it is not a harbinger of the abandonment of over 200,000 Israelis who live on its eastern side. Third, we are told that the fence is not a border.

But not one of these statements is true. Military commanders admit openly that the only thing that prevents suicide bombers from entering our cities isn't the fence, but the presence of the IDF in Palestinian cities. Even Major General (res.) Uzi Dayan, an advocate of the fence, said in an interview with Israel Radio this past March that the fence "is not a wonder solution." Israel's security, he says, requires military activity "in the entire territory, [i.e., all of Judea and Samaria and Gaza] with freedom of action in the entire territory."

Yet not only is the fence of little defensive value, building it will provide another excuse -- both for this country's Left as well as the international community -- to demand the withdrawal of the IDF from Palestinian cities and villages. So, a fence that will not stop infiltrations will also prevent us from doing the one thing that works in stopping terrorism.

Read the whole thing.

The New Generation of Jemaah Islamiah

The Straits Times reports that a new generation of Jemaah Islamiah terrorists is preparing a series of attacks in December against Western targets in Indonesia: JI poised to strike in new terror wave.

These new generation Jemaah Islamiah terrorists are every bit as deadly and fanatically anti-American as captured leaders Hambali and Imam Samudra, said intelligence sources.

The Sunday Times understands that 12 of them, drawn from six terrorist cells in Indonesia, plan to turn the festive December season into a bloody nightmare.

Sources disclosed that at a meeting of JI leaders in East Kalimantan in March, Zulkarnaen, their new chief, and Azahari Husin, JI's master bomb-maker, chose the targets.

International hotels in Jakarta, Surabaya and Medan were picked as one set of targets. The other comprised residential areas with large expatriate communities. ...

Interviews with militants by intelligence sources here reveal that three of the chosen 12 stand out as future JI leaders.

One of them, who goes by the alias of Maman Suharmen, is a member of the JI cell in Banten, West Java.

Now in hiding in Kalimantan, he is said to have attended bomb-making classes by Dul Matin, the fugitive militant who reportedly used a cellphone to detonate the Bali bombs which killed 200 people last October. Sources said Maman, 29, is being groomed to take over from senior JI figures like Imam Samudra, who is on death row for the Bali attack.

The second rising star is 29-year-old Nur Islamy. He is believed to be running a network stretching from Bengkulu and Medan to the Riau Islands from his base in Lampung, Sumatra.

Little is known about the third man, Zuharmen, 28, from Kediri in Sulawesi.

Most of the new radicals graduated from the Hidayatullah religious boarding school in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, founded by a supporter of Kahar Muzakkar, the leader of the Darul Islam rebellion in South Sulawesi in the 1950s. It now has more than 100 branches in Indonesia.

Remember though; this is just a tiny minority of fanatics who are perverting the true peaceful message of Islam.

CAIR Infiltrates Canadian Libraries

Radical Islamic front group CAIR will be generously providing the Calgary Public Library with whitewashed Islamic propaganda: Libraries get new package to study Islam. (Hat tip: TS.)

In a bid to quench Canadians' need for answers about Islam, a North American organization launched a national initiative yesterday to provide literature on the religion to public libraries.

The main branch of the Calgary Public Library was the site for the launch of the CAIR-CAN -- the Canadian office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations -- national Islamic library project.

The initiative follows two trends observed in the last few years by the organization, said CAIR-CAN executive director Riad Saloojee.

"The first is a great deal of interest, phenomenal interest about Islam and ... we saw an increase in interdenominational dialogue, more discussion and more acceptance," said Saloojee.

Since the attacks against New York City and Washington D.C., Canadians have had difficulty finding literature on Islam and Muslim culture as orders for books have been back-logged at stores and the copies available at libraries are few in numbers.

At the heart of the project are 13 pieces of literature and videos ranging from the Holy Qur'an, to PBS-produced documentaries.

The package, which will be donated to libraries across the country, took months to research and assemble, but will provide a thorough understanding of the faith and appeal to different interests, said Saloojee.

The Muslim Council of Calgary will buy the packages from CAIR-CAN for $200 each and ensure all 16 Calgary branches have enough material to offer.

All the Way With the USA

Here’s a great op-ed by Paul Sheehan in the Sydney Morning Herald on why Australia is all the way with the USA. (Hat tip: Joel G.)

The Prime Minister has a very specific threat in mind when he makes more deposits in the American bank of military goodwill. He is thinking about Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation, one of the world's most precarious democracies, and one of the most violent. Political reality, namely the overriding need to keep the peace with the Indonesians, dictated that Howard cannot say what the electorate tacitly understands, which is that we live next to a nation with 200 million Muslims, with a history of political violence, a tradition of political corruption, an increasing level of Islamic militancy, a place where scores of Australians and hundreds of Christians have been murdered, a nation that could fall apart, or under the control of Islamic fundamentalism, or both.

In short, we need a great and muscular ally if the satay hits the fan.

No Australian politician can say what I have just written, but all are entitled to think it, just as any political leader would be imprudent not to cultivate good relations with Indonesia and give credit to the good job the Indonesians have done in bringing to justice the Bali murderers and rolling up terrorist networks in the country.

We live in hope. And because Australia is not a stupid country, it is widely understood that an unambiguous alignment with the US, while offering protection, also entails risks, and possibly entanglements. The most obvious risk is antagonising the atavistic bigots in the Muslim world currently looking for any excuse and any means to kill wealthy Westerners.

The Bloody Hands of the Peace Movement

The antiwar protests in Europe don’t seem to be drawing the same large crowds this year. But here’s a sickening photo from the Berlin chapter, showing a Muslim woman wearing a Palestinian kaffiyeh, holding up a simulated “bloody” hand:

A woman holds up her red-painted hand as she protests against the US troops in Iraq and against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian areas at a demonstration in Berlin on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003. About 300 people took part at the protest in the German capital. (AP Photo/Markus Schreiber)

She is commemorating an infamous incident of Palestinian savagery, in which two Israeli reservists were literally torn to pieces at a Ramallah police station by a frenzied mob:

This is how far the “peace” movement has degenerated in Europe, where terror supporters mingle with “antiwar activists” and no one even notices the insane dissonance.

Malaysian Moonbat Watch

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad made his final speech to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, no doubt finding a receptive audience for his raving loonosity: Malaysia's PM Makes Final U.N. Appearance.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed has used almost every international podium to lambast the West for two decades, winning a reputation as a loud, and often blunt, champion of Third World causes.

And also winning a reputation as a primo nut sandwich.

"Today we are seeing the resurgence of European imperialism," Mahathir said. "Today we actually faced by the old physical occupation by foreign forces, puppet regimes are installed, dancing as puppets do."

That’s right; things were much better when monsters like Saddam Hussein were ruling with the iron fist, killing, raping, and torturing at will. At least they weren’t puppets.

On Thursday, Mahathir went beyond slamming the West. The United Nations, he said, had become a tool of the colonizers.

"Its organs have been cut out, dissected and reshaped so that they may perform the way the puppet masters want," he said.

"This organization is today collapsing on its clay feet, helpless to protect the weak and the poor," Mahathir said.

The really ironic thing about this speech is that it was given in front of an audience composed of about 70% despots, cronies, and bagmen for the most repressive regimes in the world.

Dissected puppets with reshaped organs, dancing on collapsing clay feet. Gotta admit, the moonbat sure can turn a phrase.

Islamic Work Accident

No virgins for this jihad boy: Muslim Militant Killed Making Bomb; Israel on Alert.

Ahmed Hassan, a member of the militant Islamic Jihad, died in Saturday's blast in the Gaza town of Rafah when a bomb he was assembling or handling detonated prematurely, sources in the group told Reuters. One other militant was wounded.

The United States, Canada, and now the European Union have all placed these Palestinian gangs on their “terrorist” lists, yet Reuters and AP and the New York Times still insist on calling them “militants.”
