For his first assignment, 22 year-old Lambert reported to the Aviation Unit of the brand new light cruiser USS BOISE (CL-47) which carried four Curtiss SOC Scout-Observation seaplanes like this one.  He became Boise's aviation officer and served 3½ years from Jan. 1938 to May 1941.

The Boise was the Navy's newest light cruiser.  Launched in Dec. 1936, she was commissioned in Aug. 1938.  Lambert was her first aviation officer.

She was 608 ft. long, had 100,000 horsepower, and made 33 knots.

Lambert flew during her shakedown cruise to Monrovia, Liberia; and Cape Town, Union of South Africa.  Then Boise joined Division 9, Cruisers Battle Force, at San Pedro, Calif. and operated alternately off the west coast and in Hawaiian waters.
