Thelma learned that her brother, Lieutenant Commander Radcliffe Denniston, had been killed when his Avenger was shot down on a combat mission over Manila Harbor on Nov. 13, 1944.  He had been the Commander of Torpedo Bomber Squadron VT-11 on the U.S.S. Hornet.

Planes from four carriers successfully raided Japanese shipping in Manila Harbor on Nov. 13th in a huge battle in which many Navy planes were lost.

Incredibly, V.G. Lambert had flown his final mission in that very battle.  He saw several planes shot down and now realized he may have seen his brother-in-law crash.  He didn't know it at the time, because they were from different carriers.

So the couple mourned the man who introduced them when they had all served together at Cape May just two years earlier.  It seemed like a long time ago.

Eventually, Radcliffe and his two crew members were recovered and he was buried in Plot N, Row 4, Grave 195 at the Manila American Cemetery.

Next, an officer knocked at the door asking for Thelma
