: Looking for information on Robert Shirley b. 1840 in Greene County, NC, m. Martha Tryphenia Slater b. 1845 in Georgia. She was the mother of Horace Edward Slater b. 1874. Horace married Ella Villetia Shirley who was the daughter of Harvey Shirley b. abt. 1847 and Mary Elizabeth Shackleford. Harvey and Robert were brothers, sons of Byrd Shirley b. 1797 and Louisianna Summerlin b. abt. 1810. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I would appreciate any information. Thanks!
William Shirley (b. abt 1837) was Robert Shirley's older brother
and my great, great grandfather. Other siblings were John (b.
abt 1832), Martha Ann (b. abt 1838), George W. (b. abt 1843) and
Harvey Shirley (b. abt 1847). Information I have on Robert's
Civil War service is as follows: Enlisted in Greene Co. on
4/23/61 at age 20. Mustered into A Company, 3rd North Carolina
Infantry. Wounded at Malvern Hill on 7/1/62 and again at
Gettysburg on 7/2/63. Captured at Spotsylvania Court House
on 5/12/64 and paroled 2/15/65. Hospitalized in Richmond, Va.,
on 3/21/65. Brothers William and George were also in the 3rd
N.C. and were captured with Robert, George being wounded in
the process. Older brother John served in the 2nd N.C. Light
Artillery and was captured at Ft. Fisher on 1/15/65 and
imprisoned at Elmira, N. Y. This information comes from
"North Carolina Troops 1861-65, A Roster". Hope this information
has been helpful.
