You Can't Stop the Bum Rush

THE ROLLING STONE REVIEW

Do you ever wish that someone would go up to that tattooed Limp Bizkit guy and give him a Three Stooges poke in the eye, yank his floppy hat down over his face and duck under his legs before he can take a swing? Marc Costanzo of Len might be just the man to do it. Costanzo is the rare new white rapper who doesn't take his badassness too seriously. On You Can't Stop the Bum Rush, Len's exuberantly silly, surprisingly inspired major-label debut, Costanzo and his crew combine old-school hip-hop, electronica, indie rock, psychedelia, girl-group pop and New Wave into a delirious post-Beck hodgepodge, with a gospel choir and guest MCs Kurtis Blow and Biz Markie thrown in to mismatch. In "Steal My Sunshine," Costanzo and his sister, Sharon -- she sounds like one of Josie's Pussycats -- trade verses over a reverbed funk beat that's about as raunchy as the Jackson 5. "Cryptik Souls Crew" is a kind of hip-hop "Name Game." In "The Hard Disk Approach," a deadpan German voice monotones against a tweaky trip-hop backdrop. Twelve years ago, these guys might have been Camper Van Beethoven, taking the piss out of college rock. Today, another genre needs them more. (RS 820)
