Frequently Asked Questions Regarding IBM's Acquisition of Information Laboratory

Q: Why did IBM acquire Information Laboratory?
A: Information Laboratory marketed Small Worlds, a static analysis tool that helps development staff understand the structural design of their code. Such analysis can be performed early in the software lifecycle, before the code is executed, to identify component dependency issues that affect the stability and overall quality of the software. Such capability is well suited to the IBM Rational Quality by Design initiative and nicely complements the IBM product portfolio.

Q: How will I receive technical assistance for my already purchased licenses of Small Worlds?
A: You can send e-mail requests for technical assistance to asst@us.ibm.com. Your messages will be routed to the correct party who will address your needs. Response time should be consistent with your past experiences.

Q: Can I still purchase licenses of Small Worlds?
A: As a result of the acquisition, IBM is suspending new sales of Small Worlds while it incorporates the functionality into its product portfolio. The e-commerce function of the Small Worlds web site is now disabled. Current customers needing additional licenses for critical project support can contact IBM by e-mail at asst@us.ibm.com for special consideration.

Q: How can I stay informed on when IBM will release the Small Worlds capability as part of an official IBM offering?
A: If you would like us to notify you when we re-introduce the Small Worlds capability in our product portfolio, send an email to smwlds@us.ibm.com
