2.10.6. Tribal Development Programme:

An integrated project for tribal development with emphasis on strengthening the traditional linkages between tribals and forests with an outlay of Rs.70.00 crores has been prepared for a period of 5 years to be posed to Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India for funding.

2.11.  Wildlife sanctuaries:

The constitution of new wildlife sanctuaries at the following places are under the consideration of Government.

2.12. Tamil Nadu Forest Plantation Corporation Ltd.:

  The main objectives of the Corporation are to raise, maintain and harvest pulpwood and cashew to meet the needs of industries and to supply firewood to meet the fuelwood needs of the public.  The Government of Tamil Nadu has paid the entire share capital of the Corporation.  The Corporation is having under its control an area of 71,013 hectares of Reserve Forest leased out by the Forest Department.  This Corporation has an authorised share capital of Rs.10.00 crores and a paid up share capital of Rs.3.00 crores.

2.12.1. Achievements

The details of the plantations raised and maintained during 2000-2001, 2001-2002 are furnished below:

2.12.2. Pulpwood supply

During the year 2001-2002, the Corporation proposed to harvest about 90,000 metric tonnes of pulpwood.  Out of the total harvest 50,000 metric tonnes was allotted to M/s. Tamil Nadu News print and papers Limited and 10,000 metric tonnes to M/s.Seshasayee Papers and Board Limited.  For the balance available quantity, the Corporation is taking action for disposal.

2.12.3. Sandalwood oil factory:

In the sandalwood products factory, the Corporation has produced a quantity of sandalwood oil of 5644 kilograms during the year 2000-2001 and also produced other by products.  The corporation has sold a quantity of 3813.123 kilograms of sandalwood oil as well as other by-products.  By taking strenuous efforts the Corporation has established the brand name of its sandalwood products in the local and international markets.

2.12.4. Proposals for 2002-2003

For the year 2002-2003, the Corporation has proposed to raise high yielding pulpwood plantations over an area of 1650 hectares, cashew plantations over an area of 1000 hectares, medicinal plantations over an area of 15 hectares and timber plantations over an area of 11.50 hectares.  It is also proposed to raise 100 hectares of casuarina plantations using grafted technology.
