In July 1942, Lambert was given his first command: a new squadron of OS2-U Kingfisher coastal observation planes operating out of Cape May, New Jersey.  They patrolled two hundred miles out where German subs might be caught charging their batteries on the surface.

A fellow Naval aviator and classmate of Lambert's named Radcliffe "Peter" Denniston, was also stationed at Cape May.  Radcliffe introduced Lambert to his kid sister Thelma who was a nurse at the base's Naval Hospital.  She was there when the Hindenberg crashed and had tended many survivors.

Love blossoms fast in perilous times.  V.G. Lambert soon married the vivacious nurse from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

Lambert and his brother-in-law Radcliffe were itching to get their hands on the enemy's neck, so they lobbied to be sent to the South Pacific.
