[24-Nov-2003]  Urgent help needed for Miami protestors
The FTAA summit, in which leaders of 34 countries contemplated an agreement in which corporations will be able to sue governments who enact regulations seen as "barriers of trade", occurred this past week in Miami, Florida. This summit was met by a huge number of prostestors, who were, however, met by police brutality both in the streets and in jail. There is an estimation of 250 arrests, a total of 50 arrests coming from a jail solidarity protest at the Miami-Dade county jail. This protest was simply a peaceful vigil. Urgent action is being sought to help protestors in jail who face beatings and other acts of violence.

[04-Dec-2003] >>> Housmans Relaunch Appeal
-
Over forty years ago, generous individuals made funds available to buy and equip the building at 5 Caledonian Road, in London 's Kings Cross district, as a resource both for the British and international peace movement and for a broad spectrum of radical and alternative groups.

Currently 5 Caledonian Road houses War Resisters' International, Voices in the Wilderness UK, Housmans Bookshop and the Lansbury House Trust Fund, as well as the publishing offices of Peace News and Nonviolent Action.

Now the building needs refurbishing, to bring it up to date with contemporary requirements and make better use of space. We have obtained a grant for external works, but need a further cash injection to bring the inside of the building up to scratch.

We know many people value what this building has stood for in the past, and - more importantly - value the role it can continue to play in the future.

If you would like to help, please read this appeal leaflet (PDF format), and use the separate response form (PDF format) to offer specific assistance.

War and peace in the information age

Rather than filling our pages with articles dissing corporate media (not that they don't deserve it), we have produced an issue of Peace News that focuses on five areas which we feel will be of use to activists and campaigners worldwide:
  • How activists and campaigners are using new media technologies
  • The development of grassroots independent media during conflict
  • The use of media to generate and sustain conflict
  • The challenges of working in mainstream media
  • The value of peace journalism
Plus a funky tools section, including everything from how to run your own pirate radio station and workshop ideas for guerilla propaganda, to alternative media listings and where to find activist guides on using the mainstream media.

Also in this issue: comments on the militarisation of the EU and reflections from Thailand on president Bush's recent visit.

The printed version of Peace News also includes an eight-page pullout section containing this year's prisoners for peace articles, honour roll and campaign ideas.

You can view the prisoners for peace material on the War Resisters' International website here.

The issue includes contributions from: Electronic Iraq, X-tausendmal quer, Pakistan-based journalist Beena Sarwar, Reporting the World co-director Jake Lynch, Vision Machine Collective, and Radio Netherlands.
