Electric Locomotive Class 146.1 - Germany - TRAXX P160 AC

The Class 146 locomotives for DB Regio are derived from the Class 145 units Bombardier Transportation has supplied to DB Cargo since the beginning of 1998. They include a supplementary mass transit equipment package and are equipped with a sprung Gealaif hollow-shaft drive system for the higher service speed of 160 km/h instead of the cheaper axle-hung version.

The Class 145 locomotives currently in service with DB Cargo are gradually being replaced by Class 185 locomotives that have been upgraded in some areas and are now equipped for dual-frequency operation. The locomotives scheduled for delivery to DB Regio as of January 2003 will also be based on this more advanced technology. To avoid confusion, they will be classified as Class 146.1 locomotives.

Class BR 146.1 locomotives incorporate all the key features of the proven DB Class 145/146 and 185 units. Like their predecessors, they are also equipped with a package designed for mass transit applications. This consists primarily an automatic train destination display positioned above the front windows. They are also provided with a passenger information system using loudspeakers distributed throughout the train, plus a door control system and passenger emergency intercom system via an IBIS bus.

The bogie and drive unit is identical to that used in the Class 146, ensuring that DB Regio will benefit from the outstanding features of the Gealaif concept that have already been demonstrated in over one thousand units to date.
