Fairfax, VA – Hard-working American families expect more than finger pointing and political games from their Senators, but unfortunately under Senator Tom Daschle’s (D-SD) leadership that’s all they’ve gotten, says the United Seniors Association.
“The Senate went on a month-long recess without finishing many important duties, including passing a budget. Many Democrats have found time to continue their political games while at home by criticizing President Bush for their own failures. These same Democrats have spent the entire legislative session not doing the job their constituents elected them to do," said United Seniors Association Chairman and Chief Executive Charles W. Jarvis. "With our nation in the midst of a war on terrorism and a struggling economy, is Senator Daschle’s Senate interested only in partisan political gains? I hope not.”

The Democrats spent the majority of the session trying to blame the Enron and WorldCom scandals on President Bush, knowing that corporate corruption started years before he entered office. They have also vowed to use whatever tactics necessary to scare Seniors about their Social Security and Prescription Drug Benefits.

“Senate Democrats have shown they believe winning the American public’s vote has more to do with blaming your political opposition than passing legislation that would protect our homeland, strengthen our economy, and ensure Seniors Social Security and prescription drug benefits,” Jarvis said.

“Senator Daschle’s failures are glaring,” continued Mr. Jarvis. “When he left town, he left the American people hanging on critical issues.”

§ No Prescription Drug Plan – Failed to match the House’s passage of Prescription Drug Legislation. Does Daschle still plan to use Prescription Drugs as an issue in the election?
§ No Budget Plan – Without a federal spending plan, families, schools, non-profits, state and local governments are left to operate without knowing the availability of funds. The House succeeded months ago, why not the Senate?
§ No Permanent tax cuts – Failed to jumpstart our economy and assist hard-working families by passing immediate and permanent tax cuts. USA has begun airing radio ads encouraging Democrat Senators to support Bush’s plan for lower taxes and stronger national defense. The House acted, why not the Senate?
§ No Authorization or Appropriation for Homeland Security- After attempting to water down the Homeland Security bill, the Senate failed to pass a bill that would protect innocent Americans from future attacks. Again, the House moved quickly. Why not the Senate?
§ No Arming of Airline Pilots- The House passed important legislation to ensure the security of the cockpit, but the Senate failed to follow suit in making airline safety a priority.

“The American people are disgusted with rhetoric. They want effective results,” Jarvis said. “The whole world is watching, Mr. Daschle.”
