Senior Voters Want Fair Vote, Not Obstructionism

Fairfax, VA – United Seniors Association Chairman and Chief Executive Charles W. Jarvis warned Senate supporters of a filibuster against nominee Miguel Estrada that they are inviting the ire of America’s mainstream voters.
“Marrying a Senate filibuster with vitriolic rhetoric against President Bush could be a sign that a Great Liberal Deathwish is at work,” said Mr. Jarvis. “Highly partisan delays in debate on the Estrada nomination will undoubtedly backfire and damage the liberals’ cause.”
“Obstructionism may be a way for Democrats to prove their mettle with the ACLU, People for the American Way, pro-abortion groups and others on the Left. The risk is high for self-inflicted damage because this tactic is a stunning miscalculation of the views and sentiments of Main Street American voters, who would view it as cantankerous and petty at best and destructive and divisive at worst,” continued Mr. Jarvis.
“The view prominent among many Democrats today that says, ‘Take the gloves off, attack Bush mercilessly, and make our political differences ruthlessly clear,’ could be a recipe for permanent minority status. The very things liberals claim will distinguish and strengthen them, could actually further weaken their standing with a large majority of American voters.”
“The Liberal Deathwish first revealed itself in the Fall elections. In the USA Post-Election Voter Survey voters did acknowledge they knew the messages Democrats wanted to champion -- education, Social Security, prescription drugs, health care. Yet voters said ‘Negativity,’ ‘Mudslinging,’ and ‘No Platform’ were three of the top four messages they heard from the Democrats.”
“The USA Survey literally shows that the more Democrats pounded away at President Bush and their opponents in Fall 2002, the less likely voters were to support them. The Estrada filibuster plan suggests liberal Senators have learned nothing from their Fall, 2002 minority-making experience.”
