Honeycomb Waffles

Pattern © 2002, S. Turner

Alternating bands of knit 2 purl 2 rib, separated by 2 rows of purl stitches give a lovely honeycomb effect, both on and off the foot. The rib-like effect of the pattern is most accommodating, fitting a woman's medium or large foot, or a man's medium foot with no adjustment to the pattern required.

Materials: 2 x 50g balls of 5 ply Heirloom Superwash Wool (135m/50g) approximately equivalent to sportweight yarn
1 set 2.75mm (US size 2) double pointed needles

Gauge/Tension: 16sts = 5cm (2 inches)
      22 rows = 5cm (2 inches)

Finished Size: as written, the pattern will give you a 15cm (6") cuff, 9cm (3.5") heel depth, 23 cm (9.25") foot length, which fits my ladies' size 10 (26cm) foot perfectly. You will have about 3 metres of yarn left from each skein. If you require a longer cuff or foot, you will need more yarn.

Abbreviations:
ndl = needle tbl = through back loop
sts = stitches k = knit
sl = slip p = purl
psso = pass slipped stitch over k2 tog = knit 2 together
rem = remaining work 'x' rows even = knit 'x' rows or rounds

Sock

Cuff:

Cast on 64 stitches, distribute on 3 needles (20, 24, 20)
Knit 12 rows K1, P1 rib.

Honeycomb Waffle Pattern:
rows 1,2: purl
rows 3,4,5: k2, p2
rows 6,7: purl
rows 8,9,10: p2, k2

Repeat pattern rows 5 times, for a total of 50 rows, or till length desired, finishing with row 2 or 7 (second purl row).

Divide for Heel

1st row: Knit first 17 stitches from ndl 1, slip remaining (3) stitches to ndl 2. Turn
2nd row: sl, p 16 sts on this needle, then p17 sts from needle 3 onto this needle. Slip remaining sts from ndl 3 to the end of needle 2.

Your work is now on two needles, the heel needle has 34 sts, the instep needle has 30 sts. Work as follows on the 34 heel stitches.

Eye of Partridge heel stitch pattern:
1st row: (sl 1, k1) across all stitches.
2nd row: sl 1, purl across all stitches.
3rd row: sl 1, k1, (k1, sl 1) across all stitches
4th row: sl 1, purl across all stitches.
continue to work in this fashion until heel measures 7cm (2.75 inches) or heel depth required.

Turn heel

[I prefer the rounder heel, but you can use your own preferred heel, or one from http://www.magma.ca/~vanmac/heels.htm]

sl1, k 19, k2tog tbl, k1, turn
sl1, p7, p2 tog, p1, turn
sl1, k8, k2 tog tbl, k1, turn
sl1, p9, p2 tog, p1, turn.

Continue in this fashion, working one more st each row, until all stitches are worked (18 sts remain). With an empty needle, pick up and knit 22 sts along the side of the heel flap; if continuing pattern on instep, re-establish pattern thus:

ndl 2: k1, (p2, k2) across 30 sts for instep, ending with p1.
Pick up and knit 22 sts along heel flap (or same number as for the other side), k across half the heel sts on the first needle, slip remaining 9 sts to the start of the next needle.
Your stitches will now be distributed thus: (31, 30, 31)

Foot

Work one round even (working instep sts as established, noting that there is now 1 st and not 2 for the first and last patt rep of each row).

Dec row:
ndl 1: k across 1st ndl to last 3 sts. k2 tog tbl, k1
ndl 2: work across instep in pattern
ndl 3: k1, sl 1, k1, psso, k to end.
Work two rounds even, keeping pattern on instep.

Repeat last 3 rows until 17 sts remain on each of needles 1 and 3. Total 64 sts. (17, 30, 17)

Work until foot measures 5 -6.25cm (2-2.5 inches)less than foot length required, ending with row 2 or 7 of instep pattern.

Toe

K 1 round, slipping first st from end of ndl 1 to start of ndl 2, and knitting 1st st of ndl 3 onto the end of needle 2. (16, 32, 16)
Dec row:
ndl 1: k to last 3 sts, k2 tog tbl, k1
ndl 2: k1, sl 1, k1, psso, k to last 3 sts, k2 tog tbl, k1
ndl 3: k1, sl 1, k1, psso, k to end.
Work 2 rows even.

Rep last 3 rows 3 more times (12, 24, 12)
Work dec row.
Work 1 row even.
Repeat last 2 rows until 16 sts remain (4, 8, 4).
K across ndl 1. break off yarn leaving long tail. Kitchener/graft toe together, or use 3 ndl bindoff.

Cast on for second sock!
