Stags, Knights begin NCAA
best-of-three title series today

By Bobby Rondez, Correspondent

DEFENDING champion San Sebastian College and Letran, two teams which have figured in a number of fierce title match in the NCAA seniors basketball renewed their rivalry as the Game 1 of their best-of-three championship series starts today at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Knights downed Mapua Cardinals in their semifinal bout, 72-66, while the Stags trounced Jose Rizal University, 81-73, to arrange their championship match.

The Stags and the Knights begin their quest for the title at 4 p.m. with San Sebastian slightly favored in the short series having beaten Letran twice in the elimination round.

But the last time these two teams met, which was on 1998, the Intramuros-based dribblers swept the Stags, 2-0.

Kung aling team ang may mas desire na manalo, yun ang may malaking tsansa na mag-uwi ng title. At ito ang gusto kong sabihin sa players ko, said San Sebastian coach Turo Valenzona, who is in his 15th final appearance.

Valenzona authored the Stags unpresidented five straight championships and is looking to build another dynasty as the veteran mentor tries to power the Recoletos to their third consecutive crown.

For Letran, the win in the crucial Game 1 will move them closer to the title which they last won in 1999 under coach Binky Favis.

Ibang istorya na sa championship. Maybe they beat us twice in the eliminations, pero may pride ang mga player ko, said Knights head coach Louie Alas.

Alas will lean anew on the shooters Ronjay Enrile and Jonathan Aldave and playmaker Boyet Bautista, while San Sebastians game will anchored on Most Valuable Leomar Najorda.

Najorda will be supported by bigmen Pep Moore and Michael Gonzales, Redentor Vicente and Christian Baluyot.
