Typhoon Cobra: Dec. 18, 1944

Halsey's Task Force 38 blundered into the worst storm in U.S. Naval history.

50 foot seas battered the fleet while it stayed in tight formation to protect itself from Japanese submarines.  During the night, three destroyers capsized and sank, drowning 800 American sailors.

Carriers lost many aircraft, either overboard, or to fires when some broke their chains in the confines of the hangar deck and crashed into others.
