Observations from Monday night's Alamo Bowl between Michigan State and Nebraska:

What a way to start! On the game's first play, MSU's Jeff Smoker was sacked. On the third play, Smoker was sacked. On the fourth play, Smoker's heir apparent, Drew Stanton, while covering a punt, suffered a right knee injury that figures to require surgery.

Just for kicks: The 46-yard field goal by junior Dave Rayner (Oxford) in the first quarter was his 22nd of the season, tying Paul Edinger's MSU record set in 1998.

Big Ten 0, Others 2: Uh-oh! The Big Ten has lost its first two bowls -- and is the underdog in five of its final six bowls.

Lone Star Statements: The Alamodome is where Spartans go to die. The basketball team's season also ended there -- an 85-76 loss to Texas in a regional final.

How bad was it? Nebraska dominated the first half on the scoreboard -- 17-3 -- and on the stats sheet -- 283 yards to 90, 8.1 a play to 2.9, and 143 rushing to 7.

Be like Bo? With a .645 career winning percentage (118-65), John L. Smith ranks with the country's best. With a .143 bowl winning percentage (1-6), Smith ranks with, well, Bo Schembechler?
