National Call to Action For Safe Birth on February 14

by Cindy/VOCES FEMINISTAS
20 Jan 2004
Modified: 02/03 12:09 MST
Between 500,000 to 600,000 women die each year during pregnancy or childbirth because of inadequate obstetrical care. In the U.S., women of color are more likely to die during childbirth than other women. Babies of color are more likely to die during birth or within one year of birth than other babies. 1982 was the last year that maternal mortality went down in the U.S. The U.S. has some of the worst maternal and infant health statistics in the world. 26% of births in the U.S. are by cesarean section, which is an unnecessary surgery that endangers women and their babies. Midwives and Safe Birth women will talk about the Safe Birth Initiative on VOCES FEMINISTAS on KUNM 89.9FM on February 7, noon-2pm. Albuquerque Birth Network, Coalition For Improving Maternity Services, and Citizens For Midwifery are sponsoring A CALL TO ACTION FOR SAFE BIRTH on February 14 at noon. Meet at Bataan Park on Lomas west of Carlisle. At 1pm, march down Lomas to the UNM Hospital and back to Bataan Park for a Rally from 2-4pm.

ORANGE ALERT! Radioactive Nuclear Waste trucks headed through Albuquerque

by Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping
20 Jan 2004
The first of hundreds of trucks carrying radioactive nuclear waste passed through Albuquerque on congested Interstate 40. These trucks will be passing well-populated areas and schools on a traffic-congested highway that is often closed because of major accidents. Albuquerque City Council will vote on a memorial city resolution to prevent the transportation of nuclear waste within Albuquerque City limits until the Department of Energy complies with safety measures. Email and call your city councilors(768-3100) and fax(768-3227)and pressure them to vote for this memorial. Come to the city council meeting on January 21, 5pm, City Hall, 5th & Marquette NW, to voice your support for this memorial.

Poverty is not a crime

by Dignity
19 Jan 2004
Modified: 01/20 04:06 MST
As the U.S. economy worsens, more and more families and people slip into poverty and the poor become targets and scapegoats. The community needs to solve the problem of poverty instead of creating laws that punish the poor. A man who was selling newspapers outside a store in Albuquerque was arrested under the new "Anti-Panhandling" Law. On January 16, the ACLU won a temporary restraining order barring the City of Albuquerque from implementing the anti-panhandling ordinance which is unconstitutional.

Proposed Nuclear Bomb Factory poses threat to public safety and health

by Citizen Action/Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping
23 Dec 2003
Modified: 01/13 12:35 MST
The nuclear bomb factory that is proposed for Los Alamos or Carlsbad, New Mexico would have a negative effect on tourism, real estate, the economy, the environment, public health and safety. "One microgram of plutonium inhaled into the lungs causes cancer."--Citizen Action Co-founder Sue Dayton. "A tiny millionth of a gram of radioactive waste is a lethal dose. High level waste from plutonium is very corrosive. Hydrogen gas explosions are a possibility in the tanks that radioactive waste is stored in. The human body doesn't know the difference between water and tritium(radioactive water). Tritium is a radioactive form of hydrogen. The human body is 75% water. A pregnant woman's embryo would be full of tritium. Tritium, radioactive water, is four times as dangerous to children as we thought. There is no safe dose for radiation."--Dr. Arjun Makhijani, Pulitzer Prize nominee & President of the Institute for Energy & Environmental Research.[Dr. Arjun Makhijani Audio1] [Dr. Arjun Makhijani Audio2] [Tewa Women United Kathy Sanchez(audio)] [Len Ackland(audio#1)] [Len Ackland(audio#2)]

CBS censors ad

by Solidarity Media Minders/Brian/Michael D. Kowalski

11 Dec 2003
Modified: 01/23 11:37 MST
Watch the [TV AD that CBS refused to air] [SIGN THE PETITION TO FIGHT MEDIA CONSOLIDATION] [LEGISLATIVE ALERT!] Most Americans get their news from television and only 5 companies: General Electric(MSNBC and NBC), News Corp(Fox), Disney(ABC), AOL-Time Warner(CNN), and Viacom(CBS) own most of the TV stations. Under the proposed legislation, one company could own TV stations that reach up to 39 percent of U.S. TV households, so News Corp and Viacom(which both own over 35 percent), would not have to divest any of their stations. NBC and ABC still have room to acquire more stations under the 39 percent rule. The House already passed this bill, the Senate will vote on it on January 20. [Rupert Murdoch video ad] On May 29, over 60 people protested Clear Channel's radio/billboard monopoly in Albuquerque. [CLEAR CHANNEL PROTEST PHOTOS]
