The Golfito port area was developed by the United Fruit Company in the late 1930s. At that time, Zancudo's beaches were often strewn with excess bananas that washed down the Rio Coto river. Pig farms were able to thrive using the leftover bananas. Gringos starting moving to Zancudo in the 1980's. The rise in foreign settlement has brought about the demise of the pig in Zancudo, but the anecdotes about pigs running wild remain in Zancudo's colorful oral history. Today, Zancudo blends the rustic charm of a small Costa Rican fishing village with the romance of coconut palms, thatched roofs, and the rolling surf. The bumpy sand road connects homes and small businesses down the spine of our peninsula - you won't find asphalt nor sterile resorts in untouristy Zancudo. Midway down the beach, you can enjoy body surfing and boogie boarding. Walk another 15 minutes down the beach, and you'll find great waves for board surfing. Enjoy spectacular tropical sunsets right from the Sol Y Mar in our beachfront paradise. At nearby Pavones is reputed to be the longest left-breaking wave in the world.
Activities include world-class sportfishing, river tours, a botanical garden tour, horseback riding, kayaking, swimming, water-skiing in the gulf or river, hiking on the Osa Peninsula or just plain relaxin' in a hammock with the sounds of the Pacific Ocean nearby.
Straight across the Golfo Dulce one can see the Osa Peninsula, home to the spectacular Corcovado National Park. Transportation to the Osa Peninsula can be arranged from Zancudo.
