  • There are now over 1.2 million athletes taking part in Special Olympics worldwide, an increase of 22 per cent since 2000, according to figures issued by Special Olympics in Washington, D.C. from its 2002 Athlete Participation Report.

  • At the Closing Ceremony of the 2003 Special Olympics World Games, the Special Olympics torch, the Flame of Hope, was handed over to the Organising Committees of the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Nagano, Japan and the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.
