Preliminary Competition

The final night of preliminary competition had two veterans and one newcomer walk away with top honors.

The Friday preliminary talent winner was Miss Catoctin Jessica Diaz, 20. She sang "Havana," title song to an upcoming New York musical, to a thunderous ovation. Jessica was the third runner up in 2001. She is a sophomore at Syracuse University.

The Friday preliminary newcomer talent went to Miss Southern Maryland Vickie Kalasinsky, 18. She twirled single and double batons to "Big Noise" by Bette Midler. She is a recent graduate of Sherwood High School. This is Vickie's first year at Miss Maryland.

The Friday preliminary swimsuit winner was Miss Mountain City Rachel Ellsworth, 18. Rachel wore a white bikini. She is a freshman at Allegany College. Rachel competed for the first time in last year's pageant.

The first night of preliminary competition got underway on June 26th. One veteran and two newcomers took away the top honors.

The Thursday preliminary talent winner was Miss Monocacy Nikki Gouker, 24 (center). Nikki performed a blazing country-flavored tap dance to the instrumental "Roller Coaster." She is a grad student at McDaniel University. Nikki is making her fifth attempt to win the title. She was second runner up in last year's pageant, and was a semifinalist in 1998, 1999 and 2000. This is the second time Nikki has won a preliminary talent award. She first did this in 1998.

The Thursday newcomer talent winner was Miss Queen City Elizabeth Borowsky, 19 (right). She won for her emotional performance of an original piano piece, "Northern Lights." Elizabeth is a sophomore at Towson University.

The Thursday preliminary swimsuit winner was Miss Chesapeake Tiffany Jenkins, 22 (left). While this is her first appearance at the Miss Maryland pageant, she was a contestant in the Miss Virginia pageant last year. Tiffany is a graduate student at Howard University.

The 68th annual Miss Maryland 2003 pageant will be held June 26-28, 2003 at The Maryland Theater in Hagerstown, MD. The Emcee for this year's competition will be Susan Powell, Miss America 1981: who emceed last year's competition as well. For more information please contact the Executive Director, Sherry Rush via e-mail: srush@allconet.org.

Pageant Trivia: Maryland is another on the list of states that have not produced a Miss America. Kelly Glorioso placed in the top twenty (first time announced at Miss America) in 2001.

Could this be the year for Maryland to win Miss America?
