Georgetown students erected a mock representation of the controversial barrier being built by Israel in occupied Palestine. Students leaving morning classes were confronted by the 20 foot tall wall in the middle of Georgetown campus, with a banner declaring it to be a "barrier to peace".
The event, organized by Students for Justice in Palestine, also featured theatrical re-enactments of checkpoints the Palestinians must currently pass to go about their daily lives.

A montage of the voices of activists and low-income DC residents struggling to acheive justice and political freedom in the US after September 11th. The sound collected at various local events depicts a society unwilling to accord it residents even the most basic economic rights the is slowly criminalizing dissent within its borders even as it goes to war in the name of justice for the peoples of the Arab and Muslim world.

Modified: 05 Feb 2004 |
Janney Elementary is not the first DC public school to consider a public private partnership. In 2001, LCOR, a private developer based in Pennsylvania, purchased a parcel of Oyster Elementary school's land from the DC government. LCOR turned the lot into a high-rise luxury apartment building in exchange for constructing a state-of-the-art school building for Oyster. It was the first new DC public school built in 20 years. Mary Filardo, whose child was a student at Oyster, was involved in the partnership negotiations with the developer, school board, and other public officials.
Ingrid Drake from the DC Radio Co-op brings us the second piece in a series about public private partnerships, this time exploring how they are being implemented in DC.

EarthJustice claims that the EPA is not addressing DC resident health issues related to the unsafe conditions of the Anacostia River.
Selina Musuta reports on how issues of control and access to safe water resources have motivated many of DC's Indian residents to advocate for their home country.
