[February 3] Last fall, Ralph Shnelvar told voters in Boulder County, Colo., that the local government didn't need more tax money to pay for an expansion of the county jail. It now appears that Shnelvar -- who ran for governor of Colorado on the Libertarian ticket in 2002 -- was correct.

[Janurary 30] A restaurant owner is raided by police, discovers the danger of an over-reaching government, stands up to said government in court and wins. Sounds like a movie, right? It's actually the story of Wisconsin Libertarian Ed Thompson, who ran for governor of his state in 2002. But this spring it will also be a movie.

Florida Libertarian: 'Don't limit campaign donations'
[January 29] Libertarians in Alachua County, Fla., are lobbying against a November ballot measure that would impose a $250 cap on individual contributions to candidates for county office. The cap is currently set at $500.

Texas LP to contest 31 U.S. House seats
[January 28] The Libertarian Party of Texas has filed a candidate for every U.S. House seat in the state, except the one held by Rep. Ron Paul. "Our candidates are ready, willing and able to debate and challenge the Texas Democrats and Republicans," said Texas Libertarian Party Chairman David DeLamar.

Libertarian message hitting Florida's radio waves
[January 27] Libertarians in central Florida have started their own radio program -- and they're finding that the public is genuinely interested in Libertarian ideas. "We had our inaugural program on Jan. 10, so we've only had three shows," said Michael Gilson-De Lemos, a Florida LP member who co-hosts the show, Freedom Works! "But the station we're working with is actually quite shocked at how well we're doing."

Libertarian candidate in second place at Amazon.com
[January 26] Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Nolan is running neck and neck with Democratic front-runner John Kerry in a novel fundraising forum sponsored by online retailer Amazon.com. As of Monday morning Nolan had received 199 contributions totaling $6,102, which put him in second place behind Kerry, who had raised 215 contributions totaling $6,881.

Libertarian named president of fathers' rights group
[January 23] Dr. Stephen Baskerville, a member of the Libertarian Party of Virginia, was recently named president of the American Coalition for Fathers and Children. The coalition encourages a new system of law to put an end to the governmental practice of "taking children away from their fathers and criminalizing fathers for situations they can often do nothing about," Baskerville said.
