Ambulance Girl- (Purchase at Amazon.com)
In addition to being part of the Roadfood team, Jane Stern is an Emergency Medical Technician. Her book Ambulance Girl tells the story of how she managed to cure herself of mid-life phobias and depression by becoming an EMT. It is a book that is laugh-out-loud funny, also compassionate and touching. Jane takes you with her through the 140- hour “boot camp” EMT course given by an ex-marine, then on the ambulance calls where the real tales of life in a small town are astonishing, maddening, and hilarious in turn. Jane saved her own life by becoming an EMT. Her book is an opportunity to share that journey.

The Harry Caray's Restaurant Cookbook - (Purchase at Amazon.com)
Holy Cow! It’s another Roadfood cookbook, this one from the Chicago restaurant originally opened by the voice of the Cubs, sportscaster Harry Caray. Harry is gone, but the place he began has become what is arguably the top steak house in the Windy City, serving not only prime beef but also great Italian food (Harry was born Harry Carabina). This book contains recipes for the best dishes in the house, including those unique Chicagoland specialties, shrimp de Jonghe and chicken Vesuvio. Its pages are also filled with photographs of Harry and the museum’s worth of baseball memorabilia that decorates the dining rooms, plus stories about the extremely colorful life of America’s best-known and most-loved baseball fan.

The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook - (Purchase at Amazon.com)
Here is the first in a series of Roadfood cookbooks from America’s favorite regional eateries. Voted "Best Small-Town Restaurant in the South" by readers of Southern Living magazine, The Blue Willow Inn of Social Circle, Georgia, is a banquet of Dixie food. No one is allowed to leave hungry from its endless buffet, where dozens of vegetables, plus chicken and biscuits, are continuously brought fresh and hot from the kitchen. The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook contains recipes for all the Blue Willow’s best dishes, from fried green tomatoes to red velvet cake, plus a bounty of lore about the inn itself (which some say was the inspiration for Tara in Gone with the Wind), the town of Social Circle, and a culinary experience that writer Louis Grizzard proclaimed "authentic and delicious".

What The Critics Have to Say:

"It has been the Sterns' advocacy of regional cooking that has helped push it into the culinary mainstream during the last 15 years."
     -- New York Times

"Chili Nation is required cooking for anyone who loves that taste of Americana!"
     -- Harvard Bookstore Staff Favorites

“Chili Nation captures the Sterns at their adventuresome best, chasing the endless varieties of chili that twist and bend across the country like the back roads on a badly folded road map.”
-- Marina Wolf, Association of Alternative Newsweeklies
Square Meals - (Purchase at Amazon.com)
The re-issue of a classic cookbook! Jane and Michael Stern's Square Meals, originally published in 1984, defined comfort food for many Americans. A book of recipes for meat loaf and mashed potatoes, pot roast and noodle pudding, goofy little pigs in blankets, and shimmering Jell-O molds, it has been out of print for more than a decade. The new edition will contain all the same great recipes - from the Roaring 20s through the "Leave it to Beaver" '50s and the convenience-crazed 1960s and 1970s, but will have more than 100 newly discovered vintage illustrations. For collectors of Americana, devotees of pop-food history, and anyone who simply needs a great classic recipe for bread-and-butter pudding, this cookbook will be a must!

What The Critics Have to Say:

"Square Meals, which might be called modern America's food diary, is simply wonderful. Achingly funny, poignant, affectionate."
-- Suzanne Hamlin, New York Daily News

"A funny and affectionate book. The Sterns, who over the years have distinguished themselves as sort of latter-day de Tocquevilles of American pop culture, extol the glories of classic American fare."
-- Bryan Miller, New York Times

"As thought-provoking as Proust's madeleines, perhaps the hippest tome of the year. Much more than a cookbook; it's a way of life."
-- Tom Nolan, Los Angeles Examiner
