February 13: 30th Annual Saturn Awards nominations announced

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films has announced the nominees for its 30th Annual Saturn Awards. As should surprise no one, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING has topped the list of nominated movies, cited in 13 categories including Best Picture (Fantasy), Best Director, Best Writing and for five of its actors! The nominees for Best Horror Film are CABIN FEVER (whose director Eli Roth will be given the Filmmakers Showcase Award), FINAL DESTINATION 2, FREDDY VS. JASON, JEEPERS CREEPERS 2, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (along with Jessica Biel for Best Actress), 28 DAYS LATER (whose Danny Boyle is up for Best Director and Alex Garland for Best Writing) and UNDERWORLD (plus Kate Beckinsale for Best Actress and Trefor Proud and Balazs Novak for Best Makeup).

Other fright noms are WILLARD’s Crispin Glover for Best Actor; IDENTITY for Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film and Best DVD Special Edition Release; ANGEL and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER for Best Network Television Series (David Boreanaz from the former and Sarah Michelle Gellar from the latter are up for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Television Series respectively, with ANGEL’s Alexis Denisof and both shows’ James Marsters nommed for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series and ANGEL’s Amy Acker and Charisma Carpenter cited for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series); CARNIVALE (whose Nick Stahl is up for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series) and THE DEAD ZONE for Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series; THE DIARY OF ELLEN RIMBAUER for Best Television Presentation; ANATOMY 2, THE HITCHER 2 and MAY for Best DVD Release; DEAD OF NIGHT and ROAD GAMES for Best DVD Classic Film Release; and ALIEN QUADRILOGY and LON CHANEY COLLECTION for Best DVD Collection.
