The name O'Brien, O/Briain in Irish, derives its name from King Brian Boru (eleventh century King of Ireland). It is originally a Munster name, and sure enough my O'Briens are from Bandon, Co. Cork. It is now widespread in Ireland, however, and is in fact the fifth most common surname in Ireland.

My O'Brien family is from Bandon, in Co. Cork. A number of O'Brien's in the succeeding generations emigrated to England.

Here is the O'Brien genealogy (click here), from Patrick O'Brien and Elizabeth Canty, probably born around 1840.

More information about the O'Briens can be found at the O'Brien Clan Homepage, including a continuous genealogy from Brian Boru, and more information about Brian Boru.

If you are interested in finding out about your own family history, I suggest the book A Genealogists Guide to Discovering Your Irish Ancestors which gives very helpful pointers. Definitely talk to all your older family members! Or visit the web site Genealogy.com for software, old records, message boards for family names, and much more. And check out these gifts with your family crest!
