The Review
When Great-Grandfather was young, he rode a wagon to school. His dog Three Names went too. Great-Grandfather described what he did in the one-room school, how the community celebrated special occasions, and how the students and teacher stayed in a cellar during a tornado. Everyone was sad when school was over, even Three Names.

The Activities

  • Great-Grandfather called his dog Three Names because of the three names that other members of his family had for the dog. Make a list of names that the students have given their pets. Are there names that are used more often? Why did the students choose these names?

  • Have the students write a funny story about their pets. Illustrate the story and share them with the class.

  • Have the students talk to their grandparents, great-grandparents, or an older community member. Have them find out what going to school was like during their childhood. Let the students retell these stories to the class.
