Seniors See Senator Daschle as Roadblock
to Economic Recovery

Election-Year Partisan Politics Already Begun

Washington, DC—United Seniors Association Chairman and Chief Executive Charles W. Jarvis announced deep disappointment concerning Senator Tom Daschle’s position on the economy.

"Senator Daschle," said Mr. Jarvis, "is absolutely the only roadblock to passing bi-partisan economic recovery legislation. How can he in good conscience blame anyone but himself for the inaction?"

"After single-handedly blocking the bi-partisan economic recovery legislation, Senator Daschle should be embarrassed to use our weakening economy in an attack on President Bush. Does the Senator seriously want tax INCREASES for the American people? How absurd!" said Mr. Jarvis.

"President Bush is absolutely on target. Substantial tax cuts create jobs and expand the economy," Mr. Jarvis said. "Now, with the economy sputtering, Senator Daschle is opposing tax cuts and seems to want a return to the big tax-and-spend days of the past. That is a recipe for economic disaster if there ever was one! I believe Senator Daschle’s intensely partisan tone is a serious miscalculation of public opinion."

The House of Representatives passed an economic recovery bill in December. However, Senate Majority Leader Daschle has refused to bring it to a vote.

"Quite frankly, Senior Americans around the country are absolutely disgusted with the partisan politics being played by Senator Daschle. Put the best interests of our nation ahead of election-year politics!" said Mr. Jarvis. "Senior Americans want positive legislative action from the U.S. Senate now, not more political rhetoric and higher taxes."
