Reporting Trouble

The Internet is like a vast playground, with a lot of potential for fun and enrichment, but also potential for problems. It's important to remember that some types of online trouble are more serious than others.

On a playground, being teased by another child is far less serious than receiving a sexual advance from a stranger. On the Internet, receiving junk e-mail is far less serious than being enticed by a stranger in a chat room. It's important not to overreact. But how do we recognize when a problem is serious, or when it's simply part of being online?

  1. Identify the problem.
  2. Who should you contact for help?
  3. Teach your child how to avoid trouble in the future.
