- Important Bug Fix! - Version 7.8.28
- If you've downloaded Version 7.8.24 (within the past day), please download this version that fixes a nasty bug, which causes WebSpeedReader to crash sometimes when it accesses a page with frames.
December 27, 2003
- Minor Enhancements and Bug Fixes - Version 7.8.24
- A new search engine has been added to the search box on the toolbar. If you type "v " followed by search terms, your search will be submitted to Vivisimo, a search engine that clusters search results into categories. If you just type search terms, then the search will be submitted to Google.
The Links Bar and Favorites in any view are now alphabetized both by keywords and by title; this includes any filters of the Favorites.
The color changes in the Windows sidebar now includes a dark blue to indicate that the document has partially downloaded; when fully downloaded it will turn a light blue.
December 24, 2003
- Enhancement - Version 7.8.20
- The link checker has been enhanced so that it is more reliable and faster.
December 22, 2003
- Important Bug Fixes - Version 7.8.16
- Some URLs that were scheduled were not downloading as they should. Also, when scheduled pages were downloaded, the Edit and Delete this Favorite were not enabled on the Favorites submenu.
If a window was closed and all documents had been read, then the browser window sometimes disappeared.
A few minor improvements have been added in addition to the bug fixes.
December 17, 2003
- New Link Checker - Smaller Address Bar - Fixed Focus Problem - Version 7.8.2
- Favorite links oftentimes go bad. Now you can check which links are good or bad by selecting Check Links in the sidebar.
- As the program checks links, it will display the information on each link as it is checked. It is color-coded so that it is easy to recognize links with different status codes. You can delete the links individually, or you can click on them to go to the site for verification. When you have the page displayed in WebSpeedReader, you can easily edit or delete the Favorite right there by selecting Favorites - Edit, Delete this Favorite from the menu. Very simple, very quick!
- When the link checking is done, you can view all links checked or just questionable links. You can also recheck links later by selecting Recheck Questionable Links under the Check Links tab. If you do delete links, you can always undelete them by going to the Favorites form (Favorites - Organize Favorites) and moving the links out of the Delete folder.
- Minor Enhancement: the address bar is now smaller, and has a more legible, but smaller font.
Bug Fix: Certain web pages were taking away the focus from the current page when they were loaded in the background.
December 15, 2003
- Bug Fixes - Version 7.5.72
- (1) WSR didn't process internet shortcuts on the command line correctly. (2) When downloading multiple links in rapid succession, it made some noise; now it runs silently, but still making some noise when you click on a link to provide you with feedback that the click was successful. (3) Made the Edit, Delete this Favorite more reliable. Sometimes these menu options were not enabled even though the current page was downloaded from a bookmark.
December 12, 2003
- Increase Font Sizes - Version 7.5.62
- If you have a high-resolution screen, you have undoubtedly encountered many websites that use pixels to specify font sizes, resulting in tiny, unreadable fonts on your screen. WebSpeedReader has had an option to increase font sizes for a while, but this feature has been greatly improved. It looks better, and doesn't use near the amount of processing power that it did before. To turn this feature on, select Tools - WebSpeedReader Options, and check the Automatically Enlarge Small Fonts option. You can also increase font sizes for individual pages by selecting View - Enlarge This Page from the menu, or press the + key on the numeric keypad if using numeric keypad navigation. When the fonts are enlarged, they can be further zoomed smaller or larger by select View from the menu, then choosing a size from 1 (smallest) to 5 (largest). This zoom setting can be used for most pages even if the fonts have not been enlarged, but it will not work with fonts specified in pixels.

- Important Bug Fixes! - Some New Minor Features - Version 7.5.56
- Important Bug Fixes:
- Add to Favorites wasn't working right when more than 1 Favorite was added during a session.
- When editing Favorites, sometimes the postdata field wasn't clearing properly going from 1 record to the next.
- When switching to another application, WebSpeedReader, if not minimized, would frequently take the focus away from the current application.
- Sidebar tabs didn't work after closing some windows.
New Minor Features:
- Clicking links in the sidebar downloaded the links in the background. If you press Ctrl+click, then the link will be downloaded in the current, visible window.
- The Favorites form now has slightly different background colors when in Download mode or Organize mode, so that you can quickly tell which mode you're in.
- A new method of deleting links in Favorites has been implemented. All links that are deleted in any session of WebSpeedReader are moved to a special folder named Delete. If you change your mind about the deletions, then just select 1 or more links in the Delete folder and move them somewhere else. When WebSpeedReader is closed, the links are permanently deleted.
- While editing links in the Add to Favorites form, you can now delete any links directly without going back to the View Favorites form.
- You can immediately clear any textbox in the Add to Favorites form by pressing F4.
December 1, 2003
- Form Filling - Version 7.5.50
A slight change has been made to make automatic form submissions by clicking on a bookmark more reliable. As stated below, you can now capture form submissions in a bookmark, and re-submit the form simply by clicking on the bookmark. Indeed, it can even be scheduled. However, because of the way some servers are programmed, this didn't work sometimes. A change has been made to make this more reliable.
You can now save a list of items that can be added to any textbox by right-clicking the textbox, and selecting the text from the popup menu. To create the menu, just select Edit - Edit Form Data from the menu. In the textbox, type any sort of information that you wish to have available in separate lines. You might want to include such info as first name, last name, full name, etc. The first 120 characters of each line will appear as a caption in the menu, but you can store any amount of information on any given line, and it will be inserted if it is not limited by the textbox or textarea itself. You can also easily include multiple identities, when you want to stay anonymous. However, if a number of people are using WebSpeedReader in your household, there is no need to add their identities, since the file that stores the information is different for each user.

- Favorites Filter on Sidebar - Version 7.5.38
- In the second textbox at the top of the sidebar, under the Google search box, you can type in a few characters to filter your list of Favorites, which will be displayed below, in the sidebar. This selects all favorites that have the typed characters in the title, URL, or keywords. Some tips: (1) type in a domain to select all Favorites with that domain; (2) enter "file://" or "c:\" to select all files on your disk; (3) type "blog" to find all blogs in your Favorites, instantly!
November 19, 2003
- Google Search on Sidebar - Version 7.5.34
- A Google search box has been added to the top of the sidebar. Just enter your search terms and press ENTER to submit search. The results will download in a background window. This way, you can submit searches as you read.
November 16, 2003
- Popular Menu - Version 7.5.26
- Now that WebSpeedReader saves Favorites in a database, it also records how many times you click links. A new top menu item has been added that shows only the top 26 titles of links that you click most often, giving you easy access to your most frequent sites. A few things to be aware of, however:
- When you first start running the new version of WebSpeedReader, you will NOT see the new menu item yet. Only after you have started clicking some of the links in your Favorites will you start to see the menu item. Note that the submenu does not change until you restart WebSpeedReader. Each time you start it, a new re-evaluation of link popularity will be made, with the most clicked links at the top of the menu.
- Links for home pages and scheduled are not included in the Popular links, since you can easily download these URLs by selecting Home or OpenLinks - Download Scheduled Web Pages from the menu.
- The selected menu item will be downloaded in the current window.
November 15, 2003
- Download Control Added - Bug Fixes - Version 7.5.24
- Because WebSpeedReader uses a number of windows at one time, and many links can be selected for downloading automatically, a number of options have been added to control the windows and the downloading:
- Close all windows except current (File - Close All Windows Except Current). You can also close just all read documents.
- Stop all downloads (Navigation - Stop All Downloading). You can stop a download in the current window by clicking on the Stop toolbar button, or using the menu (Navigation - Stop). You can also stop all downloads by CTRL+clicking the Stop toolbar button.
- Cancel all queued downloads (Navigation - Cancel Queued Downloads). Because WebSpeedReader enables you to click more links than the number of windows available (which you can control by selecting Tools - WebSpeedReader Options), a queue of links is maintained that would be downloaded one by one as you read more documents. Sometimes, though, you don't want to read everything that you selected. You can now cancel all queued documents with 1 click. Also, if you display the WebSpeedReader Report (View - WebSpeedReader Report), this will have a list of all read, loaded, and canceled links. You can selectively click only those links that you have interest or time for. You can also read queued links in a future session by selecting OpenLinks - Finish Past Session from the menu.
- Numerous bugs fixed.
November 11, 2003
- Bookmark Manager - Sidebar - Version 7.5
- Bookmark Manager - WebSpeedReader now has a complete bookmark manager for storing and managing Favorites that is much more powerful than Internet Explorer's awkward file-based system. Note that with this new bookmark manager, WebSpeedReader no longer has a Start Page. To view Favorites, select Favorites - View Favorites from the menu. Benefits of the new system include:
- Being able to log onto password-protected sites automatically, without even being presented with a dialog box.
- Automate ANY form submission with a simple click.
- Store much more information with each Favorite, including document keywords, description, notes, scheduling information, and adding to other categories, such as Quick Links.
- Being able to quickly see a subset of your Favorites by filtering them. Simply type some letters in the filter box in the Favorites form, and it will display only those links that have the typed letters in the title, URL, or keywords.
- Click on any number of links to download in the background.
- Click on any folder to download all links in that folder.
- CTRL+click a folder to download all links in that folder and all subfolders.
- Create any number of home pages. Note: You can also prevent the downloading of home pages by pressing the SHIFT key when WebSpeedReader starts to load, in which case it loads a blank page.
- Schedule any page much easier with the new Add to Favorites form. You can schedule any existing links by selecting them in the Favorites form, and choosing Edit.
- Edit or delete any Favorite directly from the menu without opening any forms.
Read the Quick Help and the Help documents for complete information on how to use this new power tool!
Sidebar - WebSpeedReader now has a new sidebar that displays the Links Bar and the Windows Bar. The sidebar can be displayed or hidden by checking or unchecking View - View Sidebar from the menu. The Links Bar shows all of the links that make up the links bar in Internet Explorer. You can add additional links by checking Quick Links in the Add to Favorites form, or editing any Favorite link by loading the Favorites bookmark manager (Favorites - Organize Favorites), selecting the desired links, then selecting Edit. The Windows Bar shows all open windows. Black entries indicate the beginning of a download; blue entries indicate fully downloaded sites, and red entries are documents that have already been read. The current window is the selected entry. Click on any link to go to the window immediately. Important Note: WebSpeedReader limits the number of windows to minimize memory use. You can adjust the number of windows by selecting Tools - WebSpeedReader Options from the menu. The default number is 25. WebSpeedReader re-uses windows, so you do not have to close the window to move to the next window. When more links have been clicked than the maximum number of windows chosen, WebSpeedReader queues those links. As you read each document and move to the next, a new document will be downloaded in the window that you have just read. You will NOT see queued links in the sidebar, because they are not actually loaded yet, and thus, don't belong to a window.
- Note: WebSpeedReader displays documents in a particular order when selecting next (Menu: Navigation - Next Window; toolbar button: u ; keyboard: F12; with scroll lock on: the decimal point key on the numeric keypad.)
- The priority of the documents is shift + clicked links > unread loaded documents > unread loading documents > read documents. Thus, the next document you read may not necessarily be the next one in the Open Windows Sidebar. You can access any document any time by clicking on the Window menu or the Open Windows sidebar, and selecting the document from the list. Once all documents have been read, then selecting next simply cycles through all of the documents.

- Bug Fix - Version 6.6.58
- Fixed a problem with the Window submenu, where all of the windows were checked, even though only 1 can be active at one time. Improved the Help and Quick Help documents.
September 21, 2003
- New Quick Help - Bug Fix - Version 6.6.28
- You can now display a concise help file by selecting Help - Quick Help from the menu. Print this file to have a quick, concise reference to the most frequently used functions and features. You can look at it and print it here: Quick Help. I'll be adding more to it later. If you look at the Quick Help file, you will see that I have also changed 2 keys on the keypad for those of you who use Keypad Navigation. Pressing the 2 key goes to the top of the document, and 3 goes to the bottom. I think you'll find this a very convenient way to navigate. Try it!
- Unfortunately, a setup bug that I thought I had fixed, wasn't. It prompts you to insert disk because it cannot find a file. This bug has been fixed for sure, this time.

- Major Enhancement to Ease of Use - Home Pages - Version 6.6.12
- You can now page down or up with the mouse wheel, and you can go to the next document by simply pressing the right mouse button. Furthermore, by pressing the Alt key while turning the mouse wheel, you can scroll a few lines at a time, up or down, which is the default action of the mouse wheel, normally. If you want the default context menu that usually comes up by clicking the right button, just press the Ctrl key while you click the right mouse button. (The reason why you have to press the Alt key rather than the Ctrl key to scroll a few lines is because using the Ctrl key while turning the mouse wheel allows you to increase or decrease font sizes, which is what Internet Explorer does.) Thus, while keeping your hand on the mouse, you can click links to download, page up and down, scroll a few lines at a time, and move to the next document. The mouse cursor has to be over the document for this to work. (Important Note: sometimes, even when the mouse cursor is over the document, it is not selected. Just click on a blank area of the document to select it.) You can also turn autoscroll on by clicking the mouse wheel and setting the scroll mark away from the center mark. The farther it is from the center mark, the faster it scrolls. Setting the scroll mark below the center scrolls down, setting it above, scrolls up. Important Note: the mouse wheel functions require Internet Explorer 6, which you can download free from Microsoft's site.
- Home Pages - You can now set any number of home pages simply by selecting Schedule - Home from the menu. Home pages are just like regular home pages, they load every time you start the browser, except when WebSpeedReader is called to open a particular file, such as clicking on an Internet shortcut in Windows Explorer (if WebSpeedReader is the default browser, or right-clicking the shortcut and selecting Open in WebSpeedReader). Home pages differ from pages scheduled Daily in that you have to specifically download scheduled pages. Home pages load automatically. You can also select Navigation - Home from the menu, or the toolbar button with the icon of a house. If you didn't set any additional home pages, WebSpeedReader will just load your regular page.

- Numerous Minor Bug Fixes - Version 6.5.41
- There were a number of options for loading external tools, such as your mail program or media program under the Tools menu, but they were not loading at all. Also, the WebSpeedReader Options dialog box wasn't coming up due to an error. These have been fixed, along with a few other minor details.
August 11, 2003
- Whois - Menu Improvements - Version 6.5
- Whatever page you are currently reading, you can now find out about the domain quickly by selecting Tools - Whois. This information will download in the background, as most pages do in WebSpeedReader, and shows who owns the domain, IP addresses, when the domain was created, when it expires, and so on. Such information can be retrieved from most sites, even those using a domain that uses an IP address rather than a name, such as http://WebSpeedReader.com.
- The menu has been redone somewhat to make it more readable and accessible. All underlines have been eliminated for a cleaner look. The shortcut key is ALWAYS the 1st letter of the menu item, except for the top menu item Favorites, which is A, because F is the shortcut key for Files, and it maintains compatibility with Internet Explorer. Putting the shortcut key 1st was done because seeing the underlined letter, especially when it is in lowercase and within a word, is usually hard to find and see quickly, and, of course, the reason people use shortcut keys is because they are quicker. In WebSpeedReader, with the exception noted above, the shortcut key is always the 1st letter and it is always capitalized for easier reading. I have also eliminated the extra letter at the start of the menu caption where it is not necessary. Before, a capitalized letter was put at the start, and then 2 spaces, even when the caption already started with that letter, to make it more even with the letters where an interior or a different letter had to be used. As a result, the menu looks better, and the shortcut key for any item can be seen instantly.

- Important Bug Fix with Setup Program! - Version 6.4.68
- When unzipping the file WebSpeedReader.zip or WebSpeedReaderXP.zip, then running setup.exe, the error message "Please insert disk." comes up. This has been fixed. Sorry about the inconvenience. If you have already downloaded the old version, you can fix the problem right away by loading the file Setup.lst in Notepad. On the 4th line change CabFile=WebSpeedReader.CAB to CabFile=WSR.CAB. Then run Setup.exe again. This time it should run successfully.
- I have also changed a keypad navigation feature. When you choose keypad navigation (by turning Scroll Lock on), you can page down by pressing the 0 key on the keypad, and move to the next document by pressing the decimal point key beside the 0. While this allowed very convenient navigation, it sometimes caused an inconvenience when a user used the numeric keypad for input into a text box. Recently, the program was changed to disable keypad navigation while the focus was in an input textbox. However, I have decided to change it back because too many times, a web page would automatically set focus to a textbox even when users didn't want to type anything, and disable the keypad navigation. While you could still page down with the Page Down key, or move to the next document by pressing F12, it was still inconvenient to have to move your hand to a different location, and, of course, this is the way you would do it if you didn't use keypad navigation (by turning Scroll Lock off). With Scroll Lock off, you can use the keypad as you normally would, to type in numbers in textboxes. With Scroll Lock on, the keypad will be used for the various WebSpeedReader functions, even if input is in a textbox.

- Make WebSpeedReader the default browser! - Version 6.4.2
- You can now make WebSpeedReader the default browser! Select Tools - WebSpeedReader Options from the menu, then check the appropriate box to set WebSpeedReader as the default browser. By doing so, you can click on any number of links in your mail program (if your mail client uses the default browser to launch links) or Windows Explorer, or any other program that uses the default browser, and if WebSpeedReader is already loaded, it will accept those links in the background, and download them while you continue to read your mail, or whatever else you're doing. No need to switch back and forth. WebSpeedReader flashes its window each time it accepts a link that you clicked, to give you feedback that WebSpeedReader has handled it. When you are done, switch to WebSpeedReader to read all of the pages that you selected, one after the other, with no waiting. If WebSpeedReader is not already running when you click the first link, then that first click will launch WebSpeedReader and Windows will give it focus. Just minimize WebSpeedReader to continue reading your mail. WebSpeedReader will handle all subsequent links in the background, without taking the focus away from your current program.
- Note: Extensive changes have been made as to how and where WebSpeedReader stores items in the registry. Thus, you will need to set any options that you have made in prior versions again. If you entered a name and product key, you will have to do so again. This shouldn't take more than a few seconds.

- WSR Downloads a Limited Number of Pages at a Time - Bug Fix - Version 6.2.8
- With WebSpeedReader, it is easy to download many links with 1 click. With 1 click, you can download all scheduled pages, or all pages scheduled since your last session, or you could continue your last session. By clicking on any of the other appropriate menu items on the OpenLinks submenu, you can open all links on a page, or all image links, or all internal links or all external links. In prior versions of WSR, you could download any number of links at one time, if it was less the maximum number of windows allowed, which you can set (Menu: Tools - WebSpeedReader Options). A maximum number of 50 can be selected. However, if too many pages were downloaded immediately, many servers would time out, and give an error page. Now WebSpeedReader downloads a limited number of pages at a time. As each page completes downloading, then another page would start downloading until all links have been downloaded, or you reached the window maximum. Anything above the window maximum would be queued, and downloaded as you read more pages. Now you can set the window maximum at 50, and not worry about servers timing out. Memory is also not too much of a problem. For instance, having 27 windows open at the same time consumes about 65 MB of memory on a Window XP machine. Although the amount of memory depends on the pages being downloaded, this is a good approximation. This isn't a lot of memory on today's machines that typically have 256 MB of RAM or more. Another advantage of downloading a limited number of pages at a time is that the individual pages download faster, so you can start reading them sooner. Bug Fix: Some of the windows were not displaying the proper titles for the current documents, either in the title caption or in the Window submenu. This has been fixed.
June 12, 2003
- Fixed a Scrolling Problem - Version 6.2.6
- When WebSpeedReader starts reusing windows, a bug prevented new documents from being displayed at the top in the reused windows, and instead were scrolled down. This is fixed.
June 9, 2003
- Improved Navigation - Minor Enhancements - Version 6.2.2
- With keypad navigation, you can use the numeric keypad to page up and down, and to move to the next and previous documents. Pressing the 0 key pages down, pressing the decimal key, right next to the 0 on the numeric keypad, moved to the next document. Thus, with 2 fingers, you can page down with the index finger, then move to the next document by pressing the decimal key with the middle finger, while your arm rests comfortably on the armrest of your chair, or on the table. This is just about the easiest way to browse on the web. Pressing the 1 key pages up, the 2 key moves to the previous document, and the 3 key displays the WebSpeedReader report, showing all loaded documents, documents in history for this session, queued documents, and any URLs that generated navigational errors. The 7 key downloads the home page of the current site. To use keypad navigation, you have to press the scroll lock key, or select Navigation - Keypad Navigation from the menu. While this is a great feature that makes browsing very comfortable, WebSpeedReader didn't account for whether you were filling out forms, or inside some other textbox, and so, if you pressed any of the number keys on the keypad, they would navigate rather than type out numbers. WebSpeedReader will now automatically detect if you are inside an editable area, and will allow you to use the numeric keypad without turning the keypad navigation off. If you are in an editable area, such as a textbox, the keypad will enter numbers just as they normally do. To regain the navigational feature, you just have to exit the form by tabbing out of it, or clicking on a blank area of the document. That's all there is to it.
- Minor Enhancements: If a document has frames, WebSpeedReader now selects the correct frame to scroll, in most cases, rather than forcing you to click in the frame as IE does. The Open Local Dialog box to open local files now remembers the last directory you chose, and will open in that directory every time until you change it.
June 4, 2003
- New Google Search from Address Bar - Navigational Error Descriptions - Bug Fixes - Version 6.1.31
You can now do a Google search by typing a ? at the beginning of the line in the address bar, followed by your search terms. The search results will download in the current window, allowing you to immediately click on one link after another, with results downloading in the background. A very fast way to do searches. Of course, you can still access 50+ search engines immediately by selecting WebSpeedReader's Search Page, where any number of search engines can be clicked for a given set of search terms, with the results of each engine downloading in the background in its own page, but this gives an added convenience for doing things just a little faster if you are satisfied with just doing a Google search and you are done with the current page.
XP Edition only: Added descriptions to navigational error codes. On the WebSpeedReader report (View - WebSpeedReader Report), any navigational errors were reported as status numbers, but now include descriptions.
Fixed problems relating to navigating to local files from the various pages of links produced by WebSpeedReader.
Whenever a navigation goes to a PHP URL from a PHP page, the page downloads in the same window automatically, because otherwise, it frequently results in errors. This is done also for secure transactions and Cold Fusion pages for the same reasons.
XP Edition only: I have increased the clicking noise whenever a link is clicked so that it is more audible. The noise is feedback to certify that the link has been clicked successfully.
May 22, 2003
- Google Language Translations - Performance Enhancements and many Minor Bug Fixes - Version 6.1.10
- Now you can translate pages into other languages. The options include translating Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese to English, and vice versa, and translating French to German and German to French. The page translations are downloaded in the background so you don't have to wait around.
- The Favorites page has been redone, so that it looks better. This edition includes some performance enhancements and many minor bug fixes.
May 5, 2003
- Important Bug Fix for Windows 98 and Windows ME! - Version 6.0.144
- The version that I had released earlier, incorporating a sound when the user clicked a link will NOT work as designed in Windows 98 and Windows ME. In Windows 2000 or above, the routine I used keeps the sound soft and quick, close to the way Internet Explorer sounds when a user clicks a link, but Windows 98 and ME ignore the frequency and duration parameters that I used, and will simply use the standard beep, which is loud and harsh. This new version corrects that, so there will be no sound, except the one IE makes.
May 5, 2003
- Clicked Sound Added to Clicked Links - Numerous Bug Fixes - Version 6.0.140
- Once in a while, when you click on a link, navigation is not initiated. A low sound has been added, such that, if the link was accurately clicked, you will hear this sound. If you don't hear the sound, then you should click it again. With a regular browser, this is not a problem because you can see the download, but because WebSpeedReader downloads most links in the background, you didn't know if the link was successfully clicked or not, although in most cases it was. Now you will know for sure.
- The Open Local File dialog box may not have worked on some machines. This has been fixed.
- Sometimes, the creation of the Favorites page is interrupted, and wouldn't work right. This has also been fixed.
April 11, 2003
- Numerous Bug Fixes - Version 6.0.128
- (1) The maximum number of WebSpeedReader windows has been increased to 50. (2) When cycling through windows, the documents would scroll into a slightly different position. Now, the scroll position is saved, so that when you return to a document, it is in the exact same position that you left. (3) A better way to prevent popup and pop-under ads has been implemented. (4) When viewing the Saved Page document that lists all files that were quickly saved as HTML only format, clicking on the local file links didn't work. They now do. (5) Sometimes, WebSpeedReader would lock up when a link was clicked. This has been fixed.
April 11, 2003
- Control + Click Downloads the Link in the Same Window - Shift + Click Downloads Pages Immediately that will be Displayed Sequentially - Bug Fix - Version 6.0.104
- Most links clicked in WebSpeedReader download in the background so that you can continue reading the current page while the other pages download, but sometimes you want the link to download in the same window. To download all links in the same window, select Open In Same Window (Menu: File - Open In Same Window; toolbar button: S ; Key: F2). If you want to download only 1 link in the same window, press the Control key as you click the link. This will cause the link to download in the same window, but any links that are clicked without depressing the Control key will continue to download in background windows. Thus, let's say you're reading an article in the New York Times, which are frequently divided into sections, and the link to the next section is always at the bottom of the article. You can read the article, and click on links to other sources as you read, which will download in the background so that you can continue reading. When you reach the end of the section, just Control + click the link to the next section to have it download in the same window, so that you can continue reading the article. When you are done with the article, then select Next to access the other links that were downloaded while you were reading.
- Reading Pages Sequentially - Sometimes, especially when reading a document that is sectioned into several web pages, you want to read the pages sequentially. Although WebSpeedReader generally displays clicked links in the order that you clicked them, sometimes, it might be out of order depending on how long each page downloads, or how many scheduled pages there are in relation to the maximum number of windows. Shift-clicking a link will not only force an immediate download, but will also set it as the next page to be displayed when selecting Next. If more than 1 link is shift-clicked, then the pages will be displayed in the order that you clicked them, regardless of download state.
- Bug Fix: Some pages, rarely encountered, caused a display problem with WebSpeedReader. Because of some complicated scripting, the browser window would sometimes appear gray. This has been fixed.

- 2 IRS Search Engines Added to List of Search Engines - Version 6.0.88
- Two IRS search engines have been added to the search page for these taxing times. You can now search the Internal Revenue Service for information, publications, and forms. As with all of the other search engines that WebSpeedReader has, you can enter any number of searches, one after the other, without waiting for any downloads. Search results are downloaded in the background in separate windows. After you're done, you can go to the results pages instantly, in most cases. Click on as many search results as you like for instant access to those pages. Try it out. You will be amazed at how fast you can search many topics.

- Yahoo Added to List of Search Engines - Focus Problem Fixed - Version 6.0.78
- Yahoo has been added to the list of search engines, bringing the total to 43. Also, sometimes, the active browser would lose focus because of a background operation, so it would not receive keyboard input, such as attempting to page down by pressing the Page Down key. You can bring the focus back by simply clicking in the document, but this new version should prevent most occurrences of this problem.
March 14, 2003
- More Help - Better Style - Bug Fixes - Version 6.0.34
- More help is provided on various WebSpeedReader web pages so that users can use the application better, and a few style changes were made to improve readability.
- WebSpeedReader sometimes lost focus when a background operation was occurring, leaving the program unresponsive to keystrokes. This could be easily fixed simply by clicking in the browser window, but this edition prevents the problem from arising in the first place.
- Note: Some web pages have frames. If you want to scroll a frame, but it is unresponsive, then you need to click the frame first to select it, then you can scroll it. This is true for any browser, not just WebSpeedReader. Frames scroll independently—this is the primary reason why web masters use frames—and there is no way a browser can know which frame you want scrolled unless you select it first by clicking it with the mouse.

- Clicked Links Get Top Priority - Bug Fixes - Version 6.0.16
- Previously, if you had scheduled pages that were loaded and you clicked on various links in the documents that you read, then these links were queued behind everything else. This new edition changes the priority so that clicked links are at the top of the queue. However, if all windows are loaded with unread documents, you will have to read another document or two until you start reading the clicked links, but you will read them much sooner than previous editions. Remember that WebSpeedReader displays fully loaded unread documents first. If there are no fully loaded documents, then it displays the next document still in the process of downloading. If all documents have been read, then WebSpeedReader simply displays the next document.
- There was a bug introduced a short time ago that preventing the proper window from coming up when its title was clicked in either the Window submenu or the WebSpeedReader Report. This has been fixed.
March 1, 2003
- Bug Fixes - Version 5.9.42
- When Open In Same Window was selected by pressing F2, the toolbar button didn't accurately reflect the toggle. Closing the last window in WebSpeedReader crashed the program, if there was a subsequent attempt to display a document, such as the help file. Both of these problems have been fixed. Also, there were minor additions to the Help file.

- Increase Image Sizes - Minor Bug Fixes - Version 5.9.4
- Now WebSpeedReader can increase all image sizes on a document, including all frames. Each time you select it, the images increase in size by 10%. By selecting it repeatedly, you can make the images as big as want. Refresh the page to view the images in their original sizes. Keep in mind, however, that there is some distortion, which increases with increasing image size. Just select View - Increase Image Sizes from the menu, or press Ctrl+Q, or if you are using keypad navigation, just press * on the keypad. (Please read about keypad navigation in the help file if you don't know what it is, or how to select it. Although this is the most convenient way to run WebSpeedReader, it can be confusing if you don't understand it. But it certainly is nice to be able to page down with the 0 key and move to the next document by pressing the . on the keypad. You can sit back and relax and page down and move to the next document with 2 fingers.)
- Cold fusion web pages, those that end in .cfm?..., will generate an error if a form on such a page that is submitted is redirected to another window. Therefore, WebSpeedReader now automatically downloads such submissions in the same window that submitted the form to prevent such errors. The same is true for secure transactions (those using the https protocol). You don't, however, have to wait until the results download. You can proceed to read other downloaded pages, and come back to the results page.

- Important Bug Fix! - Other Minor Bug Fixes - Version 5.864
- If you have downloaded WebSpeedReader after January 24, 2003, then you need to download this upgrade; otherwise any navigations that require posted data, which includes most form submissions will not work! A change was made to test posted data that was not meant to be uploaded. However, it was uploaded. Sorry about the inconvenience. If you downloaded WebSpeedReader before about a week ago, you don't have to worry about it, although this version also corrects a couple of more minor problems listed below. This new, corrected program was uploaded at 3:35pm EST.
- Download All Selected Links menu item was not being enabled, even when there were selected links.
- On some pages, the Download All Image Links was not working properly.
- On the WebSpeedReader Report, the number of documents, in some cases, was larger than it should be.
- WebSpeedReader allows you to download any Favorites folder as a group by clicking on the @ symbol beside each folder name, which is either on the Start page or the Favorites page. This wasn't working at all, but it is now fixed.
January 24, 2003
- Crash Protection - New Menu Option - Minor Enhancements - Version 5.854
- If WebSpeedReader is closed for any reason, such as from interrupted power, WebSpeedReader will automatically, upon startup, reload all of the pages that were unread during your last session, including all clicked links.
Two new menu options under OpenLinks - Finish Last Session - Continue Last Session. Sometimes, you download more pages than you have time to read. If you don't finish all of the pages in 1 session, you can simply close WebSpeedReader, and WebSpeedReader will save all of the unread links that were either scheduled or clicked on. If you want to read these pages, simply select either of the 2 menu options, and the pages that you didn't read will be downloaded again. The difference between the 2 options is that Continue Last Session finishes the last session and also downloads all scheduled pages since your last scheduled download. This is an easy way to stay on top of your reading at various times without having to finish the session entirely in 1 sitting. These options will remain available until you choose either one of these options. However, once one of these options is chosen, neither will be enabled again until you close WebSpeedReader with pages that you didn't finish reading. Note, however, that if you close WebSpeedReader with unread pages, and you had a previous session with unread pages, then the new batch of unread pages will replace the last batch.
December 27, 2002
- Minor Enhancement - Bug Fixes - Version 5.84
- After you finish reading all the documents that have been downloaded, the WebSpeedReader Report displays automatically so that you know you are finished reading documents. The report displays a history of the current session, all loaded documents, queued documents, and any navigational errors if you have the XP version. It also lists the total documents read, and the time that you took to read them. Bug Fixes: (1) the Favorites page was not displaying the files when you clicked on a folder. (2) The upgrade file wasn't copying the files to upgrade WebSpeedReader. Important note to Windows XP users: If you have recently purchased a PC with Windows XP installed, you need to update Windows XP from Microsoft before using the setup for the full version of WebSpeedReader; otherwise, the setup won't work. It will present a dialog box, prompting you to insert a disk, which, of course, will have no effect. After you update Windows XP, then setup will work correctly. The upgrade versions will work anyway.

- Load Unread Scheduled Web Pages - Bug Fixes - Version 5.80
- When loading scheduled web pages, WebSpeedReader would only load the pages scheduled for today. Sometimes, however, you miss pages because you don't read everyday, and thus, you miss pages that were scheduled for those days. Now, there is an option, under the new OpenLinks menu, to download all pages that were scheduled since your last reading, up to 6 days prior. So, if you read on Monday, and then again on Thursday, you will now be able to download all pages scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, including any monthly scheduled pages that would happen to fall on those days, in addition to Thursday, by selecting OpenLinks - Download Pages Scheduled Since Last Download. And, of course, if you want to read only today's scheduled links, you can still do so, by selecting OpenLinks - Download Scheduled Web Pages. The OpenLinks menu now includes all of the options for opening links, including Open, Multi-Open, Open All Links on This Page, Open All Image Links, Open All Internal, Open All External, and Open All Selected Links.

- Enhanced Help File - Numerous Bug Fixes - Version 5.70
- The help file has been enhanced and made more readable, and this edition includes numerous, minor bug fixes.

- Automatically Enlarge Small Fonts - View Source Code for All Style Sheets on the Current Page, including Frames - Version 5.61
- If you have a high-resolution monitor, then you have undoubtedly come across many pages that are unreadable because of their small font specifications. By selecting Tools - WebSpeedReader Options - Automatically Enlarge Small Fonts, WebSpeedReader will enlarge small fonts, while leaving other fonts unaffected. How much larger the enlarged fonts will be will depend on the zoom setting, which ranges from 1, for the smallest text, to 5. Pages that use relative text sizes will also be unaffected. Even if this is not selected, you can also enlarge the fonts of any page by selecting View - Enlarge This Page to not only increase the font sizes for the current page, but to also make the fonts responsive to the zoom setting. If you are using keypad navigation, you can achieve the same result by pressing the + key.
- Selecting View - Source Code for Style Sheets will display in a web page, all of the style sheets for the current page, including all imported, external, and embedded style sheets, and all frames, if the page has frames. A great way to learn about styles, and to see how webmasters achieve their various effects. Some pages, however, don't permit you to look at their style sheets, such as http://wired.com/ and http://webmd.com/, in which case, WebSpeedReader will simply display the style sheet files, with a "Permission Denied" statement where the source code would normally be.

- Navigate Using the Numeric Keypad - Open All Selected Links - Some Bug Fixes - Version 5.51
- It has now become incredibly convenient to read web pages. By turning on the scroll lock key, you can now page down by pressing the number 0 on the numeric keypad, and you can go to the next document by pressing the decimal key that is right beside the 0 on the numeric keypad. Because these keys are at the bottom and right of most keyboards, you can rest your arm on the table or the armrest of your chair, and page down or go to the next document using just 2 of your fingers, and without moving any other body part. You can also page up by pressing 1 or go to the previous document by pressing 2. You can also download the home page of the current web page in the background by pressing 7. To use this navigational aid, you need to press the scroll lock key, which is at the top right on most keyboards. You can also choose this option by selecting Navigation - Numeric Keypad Navigation from the menu. The scroll lock light will come on, and if numlock is off, it will be turned on automatically since this is necessary to make it work correctly. If you want to type in numbers, you can still use the numbers at the top of the keyboard, or turn the scroll lock off to use the numeric keypad. Navigating by keypad might seem a little awkward at first, but you will soon see how much easier it is to navigate. You may, at first, inadvertently press the Next Document key rather than the PageDown, sometimes, in which case the previous document might be replaced by a new document, but you can always return to any previous document by selection View - WebSpeedReader Report from the menu. This page shows all of the links that you've been to, that are currently loaded, and that are queued. Just click on any of the links to return to that page. Of course, you don't have to use this if you don't want, but it does make using the Internet a lot easier. And you thought the scroll lock key was totally useless.
- Use your mouse to select any number of links on a web page, even if there is intervening text, then choose File - Open All Selected Links to open the links without clicking on them. You can also use the Open toolbar button (with the open folder) to accomplish the same task. Ordinarily, this button is used to open local files, but because this is rarely done in browsers, I decided that this would be a more useful function. You can still open local files by choosing Files - Open Local File from the menu.
- Bug Fixes: It was sometimes not possible to go back in history for a given window, either by pressing the Back toolbar button or using the address drop-down box. This has been fixed.
November 10, 2002
- Open All Image Links - Open All Internal Links - Open All External Links - Version 5.43
- These new menu options appear under the File menu. Open All Image Links opens all links that are images on the current page. This is a great way to open numerous thumbnails quickly. You can easily open an entire gallery, and go from one image to the next as if you were watching a presentation. If you are in a business that uses images, then you can create one page that has all of the thumbnails on one page, then select File - Open All Image Links, allowing a customer to quickly view one image after another. If you use as many windows as you have images, then a customer can not only move repeatedly through the images, but can also go to any specific one by using the Window submenu. Open All Internal Links is a great—and quick—way to look at all of the links on your own website, a friend's, or a blogger's site. And, of course, Open All External Links opens all links that are in different domains from the current page.
November 3, 2002
- Open All Links on This Page - Go to Home Page of This Site - Get Archived Versions of Current Site from the Wayback Machine - Version 5.3
- An excellent way to explore the Internet, or to quickly get an overview of a site is to select File - Open All Links on This Page. This will open every link on the current page automatically, except for links other than pages, such as download files, email addresses, video, audio, and so on. This is a great way to discover new things on the Internet, quickly and easily, especially if you go to a page that has links to diverse sites, such as weblogs. Get to know a blogger best by seeing what he or she links to. You never have to worry about crashing WebSpeedReader by opening too many links, because WebSpeedReader only uses as many pages as you designate (Tools - WebSpeedReader Options), queuing the rest of the links, opening the rest one at a time as you read each page. Try it out! Very addictive! A great way to check out all of the pages on your own site by actually looking at them rather than just checking to see if the link is still valid.
- Often you will come across pages that you arrived at through search engines or direct links, and would like to look at the home page. Now you can do so directly, and have it download in the background by selecting from the menu Navigate - Go to Home Page of This Site. This will download the page in the background while you continue reading. Of course, you could always do this by clicking in the address bar, and deleting everything that comes after the hostname, then pressing Enter (as you would in Internet Explorer), but doing it this way downloads the page in the current window, and requires extra typing effort. The new menu option offers another, more convenient way to do this.
- You can now conveniently check out archives of the current site from the Web Archive organization and their Wayback Machine (I believe it's called this after Mr. Peabody's machine of the same name, from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon series of the 1960's). This page also downloads in the background, so you can continue reading while it downloads. This page will have a series of links for different time periods, and since you have WebSpeedReader, you can click on any number of links all at one time, then go from one page to the next in an instant. A good way to get a timeline on a site, is when you get to the Wayback Machine page, you can select File - Open All Links on This Page. That way you can look at any site, from the earliest to the most recent archive, and see how it evolved!

- Stores Saved HTML Files in Database for easy Retrieval and Management - History now extends to 30 days - Version 5.2
- Now you can save HTML files quickly (File - Save HTML Only), which also includes the file in a database. The database record includes time that the file was downloaded, document title, original URL, and the filename—great for doing research. To view the records of all of your files saved with this option, just select View - Saved Files. Note, however, that the database does not save records of files using the File - SaveAs option. To view the files, you can either click the original URL or the filename. Clicking the original URL will download the web page again from the Internet, whereas clicking the filename will load the file from your hard disk. These files are saved in a special folder, wsr, in the My Documents folder, thus allowing different family members to have their own file collection, and enabling easy backup. There is also an option to delete both the record and the file by clicking on the Delete link at the bottom of each record. The history list has been extended to 30 days. There have also been minor bug fixes with this version.
October 18, 2002
- Separate Application Settings for Multiple Users - History - FTP Sites Automatically Loaded in Internet Explorer - Version 5.15
- WebSpeedReader now supports multiple users on the same computer, allowing users to maintain their own settings, favorites, and history list automatically. The history list (View - History) consists of links of every website visited during the past week, sorted with the latest visits at the top. Only 1 link of each site is maintained, however, even if the link was visited more than 1 time. This is because most people use the history list to return to a website that they didn't bookmark, and thus, 1 link is enough, and makes it easier to locate links, since they are far fewer of them. Also, unlike Internet Explorer, you don't have to expand folders to see the links. They are all displayed one after another on the same page, and like other pages in WebSpeedReader, more than 1 link can be clicked, with the resulting pages downloading in the background for instant access. You can also choose not to maintain a history list (by selecting Tools - WebSpeedReader Options, then unchecking the Maintain History checkbox.) If you choose not to maintain a history list, then any current history list will be deleted after quitting WebSpeedReader. There is a display problem when loading ftp sites (sites beginning with the ftp:// protocol) in WebSpeedReader, so these pages are loaded into Internet Explorer automatically.

- View Source Now Shows All Frames, Including Hidden Ones - View Cookies- Version 5.00
- WebSpeedReader has always used color to delineate different sections of an HTML source file for easier reading. It now includes headers and source code for every frame in a document, all on 1 page. Here is an example from Filebasket's home page (used with permission from Filebasket), which uses 9 frames. The headers include basic information about the document, including cookies that the document stores. The source code itself shows scripts in red, styles in maroon, tags in blue, and text in black. It includes a number of background colors as well, such as yellow for the head of the document and light green for tables. I have also made the text bold for brighter colors and easier reading. I'll be enhancing this feature in the near future, but check it out today. (Note: the code example page shows correctly in IE, which WebSpeedReader uses for its rendering engine, but doesn't show quite right in Opera 6.05. I haven't tested the other browsers.)
September 15, 2002
- New Search Engines Added (Total: 39) - New Status Bar Panel - New Trial Policy - Version 4.95
- (1) 2 science search engines and a new meta-search engine have been added to the search page. (2) A new status bar panel has been added to give the user more information, including whether a page has frames so that the user knows whether to shift-click a link to download it in the background (otherwise, the clicked link would download in the frame). (3) I have changed the trial policy to 30 days with no nagging to buy my software. After 30 days, you can continue to use WebSpeedReader, but every so often, you will be presented with a buy page, telling you how you can purchase WebSpeedReader, which I would much appreciate.
September 2, 2002
- Bug Fixes - Version 4.86
- Bugs that have been fixed: (1) WebSpeedReader's Start page and other local files wasn't displaying properly in Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer 5.5; (2) after cycling through the windows a number of times, some of the pages would appear empty, displaying only a white space in the browser window; (3) if a number of windows were already opened, and the documents had already been read, clicking on Load Scheduled Web Pages didn't reuse the windows already created and read; (4) when clicking on a link that downloaded in a background window and included a bookmark, the document sometimes wasn't positioned at the bookmark.
August 23, 2002
- Print Preview - Version 4.81
- WebSpeedReader now has print preview, the same preview that is available in Internet Explorer. Selecting File - Print Preview will show 2 pages, side-by-side, of the current document (if it has 2 pages or more), and you can page down through the whole document if you wish, and zoom in or out on any part of the document. When you select print on the print preview toolbar, print preview will close automatically, and present the print dialog box, which will allow you to customize the printing job, if you wish, or simply click to print the whole document. You can further customize the printing process by selecting Page Setup, which will allow you to customize the header and footer of the pages, specify landscape or portrait orientation, select paper source and size and adjust margins. All printing options are on the File submenu. For best and fastest customization, select Page Setup first, then Print Preview to see the results of any customization, then Print. The print dialog box will allow additional customizations such as selecting the page range to print, print to file, print front to back, or back to front. It also has an Advanced Options button that offers other options that vary depending on your printer. If you don't care about customizing anything, just select Print.

- Bug Fixes - Version 4.75
- There were a few rare web pages that didn't display properly when moving to the next window using the keyboard, but did display properly when using the toolbar to go to the next window. Also, sometimes the URL displayed in the address box was not the main URL of the page, but rather a downloading component of part of the page. This didn't affect anything else, other than displaying the incorrect main URL in the address box. Both of these problems have been fixed.
August 16, 2002
- Bug Fixes - Version 4.73
- WebSpeedReader allowed some pop-under ads to get through (but not anymore), and, when selecting Organize Favorites from the Favorites menu, WebSpeedReader would seem to lock up on slower computers after closing the Organize Favorites dialog box. This was caused by recreating the Start Page right after closing the dialog box, which could take 30 seconds or more on older, slower computers, thus making it seem to be frozen. This has been redone to eliminate this problem for any computer.
August 7, 2002
- WebSpeedReader now stores personalized files in Favorites folder - Faster Startup - Version 4.7
- WebSpeedReader now stores its Start page, Favorites page, and Links page in the Favorites folder instead of the program folder. This allows various members of the family to save their own set of pages in their own Favorites folder if you have set up different accounts on Windows on the same machine. It also allows you to access these pages more easily in Internet Explorer, or any other browser that uses the Favorites folder.
- WebSpeedReader starts up faster, and is more responsive almost immediately.
August 5, 2002
- Bug Fixes - Version 4.58
- 2 bugs that I recently discovered have been fixed. The first bug failed to schedule pages correctly if the title contained illegal characters for a filename. The second bug caused a navigation to a background window when an internal link on a page was clicked and the current URL was a local file name, such as clicking on a table of contents entry in the local help file.
July 26, 2002
- Organize Favorites with Windows Explorer - New Search Engine Added - Version 4.53
- Because Favorites are just files stored in a special folder, WebSpeedReader now makes it convenient to use Windows Explorer (Menu: Favorites - Organize Favorites with Windows Explorer). Windows Explorer is much more convenient and powerful than IE's quirky little dialog box. For instance, you can change the URL slightly, by right-clicking on the file, selecting Properties on the context menu, then selecting the Web Document tab. The text box will display the URL which you can change. So, if you have an URL that has stock ticker symbols or search terms that you want to change slightly, this is the best way to do it. With the context menu, you can also cut, copy, rename, or delete shortcuts, or you can make documents that the shortcuts point to available offline. You can select more than 1 file by either hovering the mouse cursor over each file, either without clicking or single-clicking it, depending on your Windows setting, while holding the Control key down, or, if the files are contiguous, select the first, then the last file, while holding down the Shift key, then right-click one of the files to select an action for all of the selected files. You can also move files and folders by clicking on them in the file view pane, and holding the mouse down as you drag them to the new location in the folder pane. Note, also, that since scheduled pages are just Favorites stored as files in special folders, the Organize Favorites option, whether with Internet Explorer's dialog box or Windows Explorer, will allow you to un-schedule or re-schedule a web site, either by deleting the favorite, or moving it to another folder.
- Daypop, a search engine for news and web logs, has been added to the search page.
July 19, 2002
- More Scheduling Flexibility - New Search Engines Added - Version 4.5
- You can now schedule web pages with greater flexibility than ever. You can enter multiple codes, separated by commas in the Menu: Schedule - Monthly dialog box. Thus, entering Fri2,Fri4 schedules a web page bimonthly on Fridays, or enter 10,20,30 to schedule a page every 10 days.
- 2 new search engines have been added to the search page, RocketNews and Ditto. RocketNews allows you to search 5,000 top quality news sources over the past 5 days. A good way to keep abreast of any topic is to schedule searches every 5 days in WebSpeedReader (Menu: Schedule Monthly, then enter the codes 5,10,15,20,25,30, and click OK). Ditto is a great shopping search engine that shows pictures of the merchandise as part of the search results.
July 15, 2002
- WebSpeedReader Report Page - Bug Fix
- A new report page has been added (Menu: View - Report). This page is divided into sections showing the history for the current session, loaded documents, queued documents to be downloaded, and pages that caused navigational errors. The history list contains all documents that were unloaded in all browser windows, making it much easier to return to a previous document that was unloaded. Any loaded document can be accessed instantly by using the Window menu, or clicking the link on the Report page.
- Bug Fix: Sometimes when a link was clicked, or the user went to a new document, the browser window would lose focus, forcing the user to click in the window to regain the focus. This has been fixed. I have temporarily taken down the upgrade file, so that I can fix a few minor problems.
June 26, 2002
- Bug Fixes
- A user has alerted me to the problem of the dialog box asking for the product key coming up right after installation. Furthermore, it wasn't obvious what to do to get to the main software. This has been fixed. The dialog box asking for the product key won't come up until at least 15 days after installation. After that, if you don't have the key, then just click cancel or close the dialog box to return to the application. This will remain in effect for 45 days after the initial installation, thus, giving you 45 days to evaluate the software. Another problem was that the Keep in Memory feature wasn't working correctly. This too has been fixed.
June 25, 2002
- More Search Engines - Minor Bug Fix
- Added more search engines, 31 in all. Added searches include Vivisimo, WiseNut, Teoma, and Oingo Open Directory Search. Bug Fix: If a user clicked on a Java applet that opened in a new window, that window was canceled. This has been fixed.
June 22, 2002
- Minor Bug Fix
- If you want to add your own user-agent string, you need to download this update. WebSpeedReader wasn't initializing the user-agent string at startup.
June 20, 2002
- Advertise your website or blog for free! - Faster Startup
- You can now create your own user-agent string, which is part of the header recorded by servers, which usually indicates browser type and operating system, but there is no reason why they can't contain other information. Thus, you can have your website address, or advertise your blog wherever you go on the Internet, without any effort on your part. Or just add a memorable quote, or even your name. Example: Kilroy was here! To do this, just select Tools - WebSpeedReader Options. A dialog box will come up, where you will see the text box for the header text. Enter your own message here! Then everywhere you go on the Internet, your message will appear in the web logs. Granted, only people who have websites will see your message, but that's a fair number of people. Bloggers can advertise their site to each other. You can do this without any additional effort on your part, or cost. Bug fix: The application was losing focus when you clicked on a link. This has been fixed, along with a few other minor adjustments to make it work better. Also starts up faster.
June 16, 2002
- Bug Fix
- When clicking on an input box to type in information on a form, the focus would shift away from the input box, preventing you from typing your information. This has been fixed. Sorry about the inconvenience.
June 14, 2002
- Bug Fixes - Keystroke problems - Pop-under ads created when a document is unloaded
- Sometimes, in going from window to window, the browser doesn't receive keystrokes without first clicking on the browser window with the mouse. This has been fixed, although the space bar is not recognized by the browser, unless it is first clicked, most of the other keys that I have tested, work, most notably the Page Up, Page Down, and the arrow keys. WebSpeedReader was not preventing pop-under ads which are loaded by script when a document is unloaded. This has now been fixed. I have tested the program with a number of documents that spawn pop-up and pop-under ads, and WebSpeedReader prevents them all, including a few porn sites, which are notorious in generating unwelcome windows. And even though it prevents all of these windows that I have tested, it still allows opening new windows that the user clicked on. Try it out. If you detect any popups, I would appreciate it if you send a link of the page (WebSpeedReader) so that I can refine the algorithm to stop these monsters from appearing. It's a constant battle, you know, but I think I have finally won the war for good.
June 7, 2002
- Better browsing experience - Keep in memory - new WebSpeedReader options
- Depending on your bandwidth, with too many windows open, some web pages don't download completely because the servers time out. Also, it takes longer to get started reading. WebSpeedReader now limits the number of windows open at any given time, which you can adjust by selecting Tools - WebSpeedReader Options. The default value is 5. However, this is not a limitation. Quite the contrary! Now you can schedule hundreds of pages, or click on thousands of links without worrying about running out of memory, or straining your Internet connection. WebSpeedReader downloads links to fill up the number of windows allowed. Any links over that will be stored in a queue, and as you read each page, WebSpeedReader downloads the next URL in the background. And because the number of pages downloaded at any given time is limited, you can start reading sooner, since fewer downloading pages means less time to complete downloading. WebSpeedReader now has a Keep in Memory option (Menu: Navigation - Keep in Memory). By selecting this option, WebSpeedReader will save the current page in memory, even as you are downloading other pages, so that you can refer back to the page quickly. This is a good way to do research. Collect pages about a given subject, then you can go from one to the other with great speed, either sequentially, or directly, through the Window menu. When you keep a page in memory, the number of windows that WebSpeedReader uses will automatically increase by 1. WebSpeedReader also has an option dialog box (Menu: Tools - WebSpeedReader Options). In addition to varying the number of windows that WebSpeedReader uses, you can also have WebSpeedReader automatically download scheduled pages and unread pages at start up. WebSpeedReader will even connect to the Internet automatically, if you use a dial-up connection. I will be adding other options in the future.

- Faster start-up
- Although my computer is no longer time of the line, WebSpeedReader, nonetheless, starts up pretty fast on my machine. But I have noticed that on older computers, WebSpeedReader can take a long time starting up. This was primarily due to the generation of the local web file page, which takes some time on older machines. Since this file will probably have only marginal utility for most people, I decided to eliminate it. I have also redone several other sections for an even faster start-up. The code is also smaller.

- More search engines (27 total) - New Favorites page - Bug fix with View Source
- I've included a number of new search engines, including AltaVista web, images, audio, video, directory, and news, and the Microsoft search for its web site for instant help with any Microsoft product, including its operating systems. Also included: AOL search, legal search, and 2 special search engines for stocks, yielding a wealth of information for a given ticker symbol. I have redesigned the Favorites page, not the Start page, but the page accessed by Favorites - View Favorites. With all Favorites folders expanded on the left side, you can click on any folder to display the Favorites on the right side, then you can click 1 or more links to download in the background. This page can be saved on the web to access your Favorites from anywhere, and it should display properly in the new browsers. View Source Bug Fix: Table code was showing up as black instead of blue. No biggie, but it's been fixed.

- Bug fix with wsrUpgrade.zip
- To test my upgrade file, I changed the program in a certain way temporarily to conduct the test. Unfortunately, I forgot to change it back, so the wsrUpgrade file wasn't working properly. I have fixed this. I'm sorry about the inconvenience that this may have caused. The full version and XP version did not have this problem.

- Schedule Web Pages Faster with Menu
- You can now schedule web pages much faster with the menu.
This is the dialog box for scheduling web pages monthly:
You can still schedule pages by adding them to the appropriate Favorites folder, but this is much faster. Also, WebSpeedReader now downloads results of form submissions that were submitted using the POST method in the same window. This is necessary, because some posted submissions require that the results download in the same browser window, so WebSpeedReader now does this automatically. If you don't want to wait for the downloading results, you can continue reading your unread documents in other windows, then come back to the form results page after downloading has been completed.

- New Smaller Download File Size
- The download size for the full program is now below 2 megabytes, about a 10 minute download on a 50k connection. Minor improvements: centered the text in the second panel of the status bar to make it look better, and put download progress in the 2nd panel to show download progress more clearly; changed the background color of WebSpeedReader html pages to white for better contrast. Also fixed a minor bug where the back and forward buttons were not representing the history list of a specific window accurately, and the shortcut keys Ctrl-O and Ctrl-S were not working properly.

- Bug Fixes
- After making considerable changes to WebSpeedReader, I introduced some bugs. The biggest bug was that the address box was not receiving keystrokes when selected. This has been fixed, along with a few minor problems. This version was up for only about a day, so it will not affect too many people. Remember, you can download the upgrade version (see link at the top of this page) in seconds, even on a 28.8 connection. Sorry about any inconvenience.

- Major New Look - Consumes Much Less Memory
- WebSpeedReader has been completely revamped to consume much less memory while running, the least amount possible. The status bar has been moved to the bottom with a more readable font, and it includes a panel for the current window number and number of windows opened, and a panel for the date. This version also includes a number of minor bug fixes.

- New Much Smaller Upgrade File
- Upgrading WebSpeedReader has just gotten much more convenient. You can download http://money.york.pa.us/ftp_user/wsrUpgrade.zip. At only about 110K in size, it will take less than 1 minute to download on a 50K connection. You don't have to close any other programs, reboot, uninstall WebSpeedReader first, or even close your Internet connection. You can start using the new version of WebSpeedReader right away. You can upgrade even during the trial phase. Just unzip the file, then click Setup.exe, if your zip program doesn't do it automatically, and WebSpeedReader will be upgraded almost instantly, and it will load automatically to verify that the upgrade was successful. People who own Microsoft Office 2000 or above can also download this file as an initial installation. WebSpeedReader doesn't use Office, but it uses the same supporting files as Office, and, thus, eliminates the need to download these files. Read WebSpeedReader Installation, Uninstallation, and Upgrade Notes for more information.

- New Quick Links Page - Saves Unread Web Pages
- (1) Now you can view your Links subfolder (these are the links displayed on the Links bar of Internet Explorer) of your Favorites as a web page. (2) Sometimes you realize that you don't have time to finish reading all of the pages that you have downloaded. Just exit WebSpeedReader, and it will automatically save all of the URLs of the pages that you didn't read. The next time you start WebSpeedReader, it will show the link Load Unread Pages from Last Session at the top of the Start page. Click this link and WebSpeedReader will reload all of your unread pages. Bug Fix: When more than 1 POST submission of a form occurred with the same URL, WebSpeedReader prevented the 2nd or later submissions from being submitted. This has been fixed.

- Complete Window List of All Windows - Easier Keyboard Navigation
- You can now see a list of all windows in WebSpeedReader by clicking on Window on the menu bar, and by clicking on a particular item, go straight to that window. You can now navigate to the previous or next window by pressing F11 or F12. I chose these keys because, on most keyboards, access is easier, and these keys are close to the Page Up and Page Down keys, permitting easier navigation using the keyboard. Bug Fix: I inadvertently introduced a bug in an earlier version, where some form submissions that used a POST method weren't working right. I have corrected this.

- More Readable Menu Item Shortcuts
- Menu item shortcuts are now easier to locate and read. Shortcuts on menus are often difficult to read, because the underlines are so close to the letters, making it difficult to see which is the shortcut, and they are often at different places in different menu items. All shortcuts are now located at the beginning of the menu item, and the letters are capitalized and not underlined for easier reading, especially for the visually impaired.

- Prevents Popup and Pop-under Ads Completely and Automatically!
- WebSpeedReader now prevents popup and popunder ads COMPLETELY and AUTOMATICALLY! No need to maintain a list, or exert any other effort.
