| Just a few months
before the April 2002 coup d'etat, the IRI was training key coup
participants in how to effectively use media to their political
advantage. It is widely known that the Venezuelan media is openly
supportive of the opposition and in fact has been criticized for
it's blatant biased and partialized reporting. Furthermore, by the
date of the coup, the Venezuelan media had become a strong focal
outlet for the opposition to influence domestic and international
politics - and was successfully used to misinform the international
public about the circumstances surrounding the brief ouster of
President Chávez. |

investigating the depth and breadth of recent US meddling in Venezuela by
examining information obtained through the US Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA), news stories, and other material.
On April 11-12, 2002 there
was a short-lived military coup against Hugo Chávez, the popularly-elected
president of Venezuela. The
Bush administration (which, unlike the Chávez government, was not
popularly elected) openly supported the coup until it heard
complaints from other elected presidents in the region - and when it
became clear that the coup would not succeed. It is still unclear
exactly how much US government involvement there was in the coup or when
US government support for it started, and from exactly which USG entities that
this support came. On this site we
will examine the evidence, using similar historical events for comparison.
If we examine other
US-sponsored coups in Latin America, such as that of
Guatemala in 1954, and especially Chile before the fall of Allende, and US
behavior during the Nicaraguan war of the
1980s, we invariably find a multi-tracked US
policy combining donations of money to create and then support opposition groups, the upper
classes and a pro-US press along with the military. US economic support
usually takes a variety of forms and often the larger funds of its covert
support are hidden behind small amounts of token "open support".
Historically, the US has also sought to buy the support of key officers
within the security and military forces.
We are analyzing
this issue because US meddling in countries that do not threaten its real
national security is not only extremely destructive to democratic concepts
of self-determination in those countries affected, but also sullies the
reputation of the US, and the concept of democracy on a global level. - jb |

El 11 y 12 de Abril de 2002, se escenificó un golpe de
estado contra el presidente democráticamente electo, Hugo Chávez Frías. La
administración de George W. Bush (que, en contraste con el gobierno de
Chávez, no fue electa por una mayoría de los estadounidenses), apoyó
públicamente el golpe de estado y culpó a Chávez por su derrocamiento. El
apoyo de EE.UU. al dictador que reemplazó a Chávez duró hasta que otros
presidentes de la región se negaron a reconocer el gobierno dictatorial, y
era evidente que el golpe no tendría éxito.
Todavía no está completamente claro hasta que punto el
gobierno estadounidense estuvo implicado en el golpe, cuando comenzó su

de Chile en el 1973, además de la Guerra nicaragüense durante los ochenta,
sin duda encontraremos que el gobierno estadounidense usaba su poder
económico para crear y luego apoyar a grupos opositores, la clase alta y
la creación o expansión de una prensa pro-estadounidense. El apoyo
económico del gobierno de EE.UU. normalmente se entrega de varias maneras
y formas, y detrás de pequeños y abiertos fondos de ayuda, se esconden las
sumas más altas de ese apoyo.
Históricamente, los EE.UU. también han buscado comprar el
apoyo de militares de alto rango dentro de las fuerzas armadas y
nacionalistas latinoamericanas. Analizamos este asunto porque la
