CHAMOT GALLERY PRESENTS SALT OF THE EARTH

Sculpture by Kathy Forer and Photography by Larry Siegel
Form a Time Capsule of Contemporary Life

Exhibit Runs From February 13th to March 20th

February, 2004 - CHAMOT GALLERY, Jersey City's premier showcase of eclectic contemporary art, will launch the first show of its eighth trend-setting year with SALT OF THE EARTH, a refreshing exhibit of black & white photography by Larry Siegel and terra cotta sculpture by Kathy Forer. "Siegel's straightforward and unpretentious people, places and things combined with Forer's striking clay-relief interiors evoke the discovery of a lost civilization, a time capsule revealed," says artist/inventor Charles Chamot, the Gallery's owner and curator of this exhibition. "And it is we in the present who are being unearthed in the future: this is who we were, this is how we lived, 1,000 years ago in the year 2004."

SALT OF THE EARTH will be on display at Chamot Gallery, located at 111 First Street in Jersey City, from Friday, Feb 13th through Sunday, March 20th. Visitors are welcome during regular gallery hours - Tuesday through Sunday, 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm, and by appointment - as well as at the exhibit's opening night reception - Friday, February 13th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Photography veteran and Jersey City resident Larry Siegel has earned critical attention and acclaim since the 1960s for portraits, landscapes, and still lives that have the spirit of the intimate participant pausing to make a visual record of what he's involved with at the moment, rather than the cool view of the objective observer.

His work is included in the collections of New York's Museum of Modern Art, Paris' Bibliotheque Nationale, and the Bert Hardkamp in Amsterdam, as well as many private collections. Early in his career, Siegel founded the Midtown "Y" Gallery in New York City and curated exhibitions by photographers such as Berenice Abbott, Larry Fink, and Eugene Smith, and several important group theme shows. He also founded and directed the Charles Gallery in New York, a multi-discipline exhibit space, and the Image Gallery, which was the only photo gallery in New York City from 1959 to 1961.

Kathy Forer's sparse but nuanced interiors seem to have been excavated from some deep grave in time, even though the settings themselves are distinctly contemporary. They encourage the viewer to take a deep breath, slow down, and make room for quiet thought in today's over-the-top world of speed and disposability.

Forer has begun to make her mark with solo and group exhibitions in the New Jersey tri-state area. She began her arts education at Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art and Planning in 1973. Since then, she has continued honing her skills with studies at The Sculpture Center School, The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and The Art Students' League of New York.

Larry Siegel's and Kathy Forer's work can also be seen on chamotgallery.com, the Gallery's secure purchasing website, which features the work of more than 200 painters, sculptors, photographers, and other artists. One of the most critically praised fine art sites on the Web, <chamotgallery.com> was launched in June of 2002 and currently receives up to 250,000 hits per month.

"Possibly the best thing about art in this new century is that it isn't created exclusively by or for an elite audience," says Chamot. "The Internet is serving as a creative expander, making the viewing and acquiring of original art more accessible to large numbers of people around the world."
