Policies for Image Use

Digital images on the Spitzer public Web site are available for non-commercial educational and public information purposes (including journalistic uses) free of charge. Use of digital images on the Spitzer public Web site is subject to proper accreditation. In cases where credits are explicitly provided for the image, please use the accreditation provided. In all other cases, the user must acknowledge credit to:

[Short Form] NASA/JPL-Caltech
[Long Form] National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
California Institute of Technology

Credit for science images obtained by Spitzer should be attributed to NASA/JPL-Caltech/Investigator(Institution). The "Investigator" field shall use the first-name initial and full last name of the Principal Investigator. The "Institution" field should use reasonable abbreviations for brevity. For example, "Caltech" for the California Institute of Technology, "STScI" for Space Telescope Science Institute, "U. Arizona" for the University of Arizona, "JHU" for Johns Hopkins University, and "NASA-ARC" for NASA's Ames Research Center.

Commercial users, excluding journalistic users, are required to copy the SSC/Caltech Image Release form (PDF form) and return a signed copy to the following address:

California Institute of Technology
Intellectual Property Counsel
Mail Code 201-85
Pasadena, CA 91125 USA

A representative of the Intellectual Property Division of the Office of General Counsel will countersign the document and return a copy to you. Copies of the form may be faxed to (626) 577-2528. The document becomes effective upon a countersignature from Caltech.

JPL/Caltech contractors and vendors with requests to use Spitzer images in advertising or public relations materials should describe their intended use in a request submitted to the following address:

Alison Ziats
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
4800 Oak Grove Drive
Media Relation Office, Mail Stop 186-200
Pasadena, CA 91109 USA

Written requests may also be faxed to (818) 354-4537.

By electing to download digital images from the Spitzer site, the user agrees that the Spitzer Science Center (SSC), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) make no warranties or representations with respect to their ownership of copyrights for the images, nor do they represent others who may claim to be owners of rights in the images, nor do they make warranties as to the quality of the images.

Additional questions pertaining to use of digital images on the Spitzer public Web site may be forwarded to the online Spitzer HelpDesk at

About High-Resolution Images

For any image which has a "High-Resolution" download option, that dowload will be the highest available resolution and the widest crop the Spitzer Science Center has available. Available resolutions can vary widely due to the nature of the Spitzer observations. The Spitzer Science Center opts not to upsource images as better results are usually attained by allowing the graphic designer or printer with the need for the higher resolution to do the upsource.

In many cases, screen-resolution counterparts are provided for high-resolution images. These are intended for online viewing and preview, and have not been optimized for print. The Spitzer Science Center recommends all publications use the high-resolution images.

In situations where a high-resolution image is not specifically provided on the website, the Spitzer Science Center does not have high-resolution versions of the image available. However, when image credit is given to sources other than JPL/Caltech, high-resolution images may be available through those other institutions, and the user is encouraged to contact them directly.

The Spitzer Space Telescope is a NASA mission managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This website is maintained by the Education and Public Outreach group at the Spitzer Science Center, located on the campus of the California Institute of Technology and part of NASA's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center.
