Nielsen Ratings for
Angel: Fifth Season

National Ratings for the Fifth Season

Notes:

1. Each ratings point represents 1,084,000 households or one percent of the nation's estimated 108.4 million television households. So, for example, a rating of 3.4 means that an average of approximately (3.4 x 1,084,000) = 3,685,600 households were watching Angel.

2. In the fourth column is the episode's rank among all prime time network shows for the week. For example, 93/112 means that particular episode of Angel was in 93rd place out of the 112 network prime time shows that week. In the last column is the episode's rank among The WB network's shows for the week. For example, 4/14 means that particular episode of Angel placed 4th out of the 14 programs on The WB that week. A "(t)" indicates a tie for that position. The PAX network is not included in the listing of prime time network shows. The ranking is based on total viewers and not household rating.

3. There is additional information in a second table. The third column of this table contains the average rating for the entire hour of the episode in numbers of millions of people. For example, 4.99 means 4.99 million people were watching Angel. The last two columns contain the ratings for the first half hour and second half hour of the episode, respectively, given in terms of the Adult 18-49 rating/share. (Note this is different from the household rating used in the first table.) Here each ratings point is equal to 1.29 million people, while the share is the percentage of people aged 18-49 actually watching TV at that time that were watching Angel. (Variety has once again changed their presentation of the weekly ratings, moving from millions of people to Adult 18-49 rating/share, hence the change in this table starting with this season.)

Overnight Ratings for the Fifth Season

Notes:

1. The following table contains the overnight household ratings that are based on results from viewing in some of the largest television markets, not the nation as a whole. This means that they cannot be directly compared to the national ratings above. Note that on April 1, 2004, the number of markets used to generate the overnight ratings increased from 55 to 56 with the addition of Tulsa, OK. Here is a list of the overnight markets.

2. Angel's overnight ratings tend to be higher than its corresponding national ratings for a couple of reasons. The WB reaches a higher percentage of households in these larger markets than in the nation as a whole because The WB lacks affiliates in some of the smaller markets. In addition, Angel just tends to do better in these larger, urban markets.

3. Starting April 1, 2004, each overnight ratings point represents 754,274 households or one percent of the estimated 75,427,430 TV households in the 56 overnight markets. Before April 1, 2004, each overnight ratings point represented 749,224 households or one percent of the estimated 74,922,430 TV households in the 55 overnight markets. Share is the percentage of households in these markets actually watching TV at the time that were in fact watching Angel.

4. The Futon Critic has had to take down their ratings info so I don't have any links any more. Overnight values from December 17, 2003 on are from the Programming Insider column at Mediaweek.com.
