KTX opens for commercial service

With the first-ever commercial operation of the KTX between Seoul and Busan, and Seoul and Mokpo on April 1, South Korea opened the era of for high-speed trains.

On the 1st of April 2004, Korea opens the world’s eighth high-speed railway. ALSTOM has been part of the story for over 10 years.

What makes a TGV* a TGV?


The TGV has already shown that it can travel at speeds in excess of 500 kph, but the standard for networks is currently set between 300 kph and 320 kph and might be increased to 350 kph.


TGV* Technology


A high speed train system, such as a TGV system, is a complex and highly-tuned integration of a high speed line (infrastructure) and high speed trains (rolling stock).

I hope you will join me in congratulating Korea on this momentous occasion of the opening of their high speed line. ALSTOM has been part of this project for over 10 years and we are very proud to see the results of such a long and fruitful partnership with other French and Korean players.

This has been one of ALSTOM's most challenging projects - complex in its technology and scope and cultural and geographical differences. It has also been hugely enriching both in terms of experience on a professional and human level.

We wish Korea every success with its high speed rail operations.
