The new spam filters are live.

The filters now have more options than previously so I thought I should actually document them. You can reach the filters by logging into the web interface and choosing filters from the dropdown in the upper right of the screen.

Overview:
The new system checks a total of 17 Lists and 9 profiles to decide if spam is spam. Often one rule alone will not be a good piece of information to base the decision on, example bad headers alone could mean many things, but coupled with a spamcop or DSBL report, we think it is spam.

If you check your headers now on a piece of spam you will see all kinds of information the spam system is reporting and this can come into play later.

Suggested configuration:
The top two selections are the weighted choices. These are alarms set off by the aggregate totals of spam.

High Spam rating, a total of over 20 spam points were attributed to this spam. This means it was listed on numerous lists and has the profile of spam. I suggest you delete this mail and not even bother with it.

Moderate Spam rating, a total of over 10 spam points were attributed to this spam. This means it was listed on at least one list or more and has the profile of spam. I suggest you delete this mail and not even bother with it, but if you may want to test it yourself by first having the mail go into the spambox for testing.

So my suggestion it to always put the high rating into trash and depending on your testing, put the moderate in the trash or spambox.

Optional configuration:
The lists below are for people who want to put their faith in one list. So if it is listed on spamcop and not anywhere else, they want this still to be called spam.

This is optional as the weighted list use the individual lists and more to make their choices. We have only listed the best lists that come up with the most spam for the fewest false positives. At the end of this post there is a description of each list.

How To Activate:
Your current spam filters are listed above the options. You can delete any entry by simply clicking on delete for that entry. Or you may also simply delete all filters. If you were using the old filters with no personal filters, I suggest just delete all.

To activate any choice just click on if you want it to go to the spambox or trash. The screen will then tell you if this change was successful or not. If you get an error, try again. The security is very strict to avoid someone from manipulating someone elses rules, after other actions your security key will not agree and you will need to close the filter window before adding other preset options.

Order Of Events:
It is important to remember the rules are processed from top to bottom on the list. So if you have weight10 (moderate rating) going to the spambox and weight20 (high rating) going to trash, you have to place the weight20 trigger above the weight10. Otherwise the weight10 will always be triggered (since you first get 10 points before you get 20, so 10 is always triggered if 20 is triggered) and route the spam to the spambox not the trash as desired.

My Friend's Mail Is Now Blocked:
This is simple to fix, just click on add filter. This will take you to the traditional filter screen. Choose from, in the drop down. Click contains. Enter the persons email in the text box. Choose Inbox in the folder drop down. Click Add. When the rule is added to the list, move it to the top of the list, this will make sure it reacts to this rule first and sends the mail to the inbox before it can be considered spam.

POP3 Users:
You have a few options. 1 you could use the header information to apply your own rules using your client software. 2 You could choose to send to trash for the weighted or other rules and never see the spam. 3. Send it to a spambox and every so often login and check the spambox for false positives.

Individual List Descriptions:
- a user moderated spam list.
- Failed Open Relay Test.
- Open Proxies.
- A collection of various spam lists.

The weighted choices use more lists than I have listed here, these are just the most trustworthy out of the individual lists. You can open up any email's full headers and see what is reported. If you consistently see one test catching spam and not catching good mail, you can add it to the filter by adding a regular filter, choosing header and entering the left part of warning. All warnings start with "X-RBL-Warning:" and then what triggered the warning. So to add HELOBOGUS as one of your selections, you would choose "X-RBL-Warning: HELOBOGUS:" Then just choose where to send it, and click add.

Conclusion:
You are not required to set any spam filtering, this is entirely optional, but I have found that using these filters will greatly cut down on your chance of receiving spam.

Other helpful reminders, don't use your email as your username, don't post it on websites and watch who you give your address to.

Optionally, Super Happy #1 Fun users can use an address for one use communication and then just block all mail to that address.

If you get an error, try again. The security is very strict to avoid someone from manipulating someone elses rules, occasionally after other actions your security key will not agree and you will need to close the filter window before adding other preset options. I am working on this issue, currently any internal manipulation will cause you to close the window and choose filter again before you can choose a preset filter.

If you have any questions, problems, concerns please either post here or contact me directly at help@evilemail.com

Thanks

Chet,

These new filters totally rock. Under the old system some of my friends would be filtered out as spam. Thus far the new system has not done this. I primarily use pop3 access during the day. Before using the spam filters I would get a spam every few minutes (POP3). Because I obsessively check my email when new messages come in, I find that these spam filters make my days much more enjoyable.

I love having the ability to check my spambox through the web interface to see what garbage I'm getting and not being constantly bombarded with junk emails.

I'm having a problem getting the spam filters to work. When I click on the "trash" or "spambox" buttons for any of the filters, I'm taken to a blank screen that says "Invalid Call 3." I've tried this several times, in different browsers, always with the same result. Any ideas?

Thank you,

m.

Is there any way for someone to set up filters to recognize certain words?...

Say if... 'penis enlargement' or 'home loan' or 'free porn' or 'viagra' or 'webcam' appears in the e-mail subject, it's simply turned over to the virtual paper-shredder, instead of finding it's way into my mail box?

I could kill 90% of the spam I encounter if I knew how to do that, or if it was even possible.

Yes, you can do that. Just go to the filter screen and choose add new. You can check the help for all your options. I suggest being very careful with context based filters and test them first by filtering to a box before you just filter them straight to nul.

I know this isn't 100% relevant, but thee is a perl srcript at sourceforge (popfile maybe?) that is super wacky at filtering out spam. It keeps a history of what you told it was spam and build an archive of words and strings. So for example your freind sending kittensonviagra.jpg or some such nonsense will go in your inbox and buy viagra now will go in your spambox

A note on the filters. They work and eliminate a large amount of spam. But with the new spam coming from sources all over, from valid ips, it is not always catching the spam.

Please, I do not sell email addresses, I do not support spam. Yelling at me will do nothing about spam. You think you don't like it? I just had to install another drive to handle all the space used by this spam. It is more than an inconvience, it is a costly problem for evilemail.

Please do your part. Do not click on any attachments from people you do not know or from people you do know, but were not expecting an attachment.

Please see this story for a new tactic the spammers are using.

I get a LOT of spam in my inbox. How about making a BLOCK EMAIL option, instead of just trying to filter it out? I'm about ready to close down my account because of the damned junk email I'm getting.

I am not sure what you are requesting. Are you using the current filters? Did you know you can add your own filters and block on any phrases you wish? You can also create your own whitelist.

Make rules from top to bottom.
Rules on top - friends email in from - route to inbox
after the list of all your friends - make a rule, route to spambox.

So everything will go to the spambox but the names you say. Another good tip, move everything to spam that doesn't have your email address in the two, then go back and make exceptions for those items that you still want to get through.

The filters do offer alot of power, albeit in not the most user friendly manner yet, but not too difficult either.

I use just the standard filters, and was able to send myself one. So either they mistyped your address, or you have additional filters which you may want to remove.

Thanks
