Google's Gaggle of New Features
|
You may have noticed that Google looks a little different since yesterday. If you did notice, then you were right. Google released yesterday a new interface to their Search engine that is supposed to give it a cleaner appearance, 3 new enhancements into their search engine, and 2 new possible features into the Google Labs.
The interface does indeed look cleaner, with more white spaces around searches and between their advertisements. This gives it a slightly cleaner look and does not distract you from the search results, which is the main reason why you are there.
The three new enhancements, though, are the big draw. The Froogle enhancement allows you to search for products you would like to purchase. Froogle will then comb through its database and show you the product listed by who is selling it and for what price. This feature is in direct competition with other sites such as PriceGrabber and Shopping.com.
The next new feature is a new advanced search feature that allows you to add number ranges to your search. By using this search mechanism, the search results will only return results that have your term with the criteria range you specify. For example, lets say you want to buy a new coffee maker and did not want to spend between 50 and 100 dollars. You could specify this search: coffee maker ..0
The third and last feature was added to their News section. Now when you search for news, Google will add thumbnail pictures next to the news result that is relevant toward that piece of news.
The two new Lab additions are the Personalized Web Search and Web alerts. The Personalized Web Search allows you specify certain criteria that is always included in your searches so that everyone's searches become personalized and unique to themselves. The Web alerts allow emails to be sent to you when new search results become available for a certain criteria.
The almost frenzied pace that Google is adding new features to their site comes as no surprise with the war between search engines that is taking place, and we the users, reap the benefits.

U.S. Library Of Congress Stored On A 50 Cent Coin
|
Seagate released an interesting press release today stating that they see in the future the ability to store the entire printed collection of the U.S. Library of Congress on a piece of media the size of a 50 cent coin.
On March 25th, Seagate will present to the American Physical Society Conference research that shows that it may be possible to have storage densities of 50 terabits per square inch. The press release states "At 50 terabits per square inch densities, over 3.5 million high-resolution photos, 2,800 audio CDs, 1,600 hours of television, or the entire printed collection of the U.S. Library of Congress could be stored onto recording media about the size of a single coin, such as a half dollar (30.61mm)."
With storage media that small, you can carry your entire life around in your watch or cell phone. Having at your disposal almost all the information you would need to perform your daily functions in life. Buying wine, and want to know a particular bottles rating, look it up on your cell phone. Having an argument about a particular event in history, look it up in the encyclopedia stored on your watch.
With the leaps and bounds technology is making in wireless and storage, electronics today seem more like science-fiction than reality.
