Athletes And Academic Achievement M.A.

The Athletes and Academic Achievement MA is designed for former and current student-athletes, both male and female, who aspire to be teachers and/or coaches and athletic academic advisors.  It provides them with the knowledge, teaching and mentoring skills vital to improving the academic motivation and literacy skills of student athletes.

Literacy and Minority Education Focus: The M.A. investigates the persistent conflict between athletics and academics in the American education system.  The course of study includes research on student athletes, literacy theory and instruction, motivation, gender, race, ethnicity and urban schools.  It has a literacy focus because reading, writing and study skills provide the foundation for academic success.  It has a minority education focus because minority athletes are disproportionately represented in the highly visible revenue sports.

Teaching and Coaching Careers:  Graduates will be prepared for careers as college athletic academic advisors, high school and community college teachers and/or coaches, and  college coaches.
