ID Commons Project

Planetwork is dedicated to the creation and distribution of software, and software protocols, which will empower civil society and enable a new level of digital citizenship. Planetwork has undertaken a project to bring non-profit funding to bear in support of the development of a light weight implementation of a new protocol specification under review in OASIS. This effort might be described as an XRI/XDI-lite proof-of-concept.

As a non-profit funding conduit, Planetwork does not hold any IP itself, but requires that the ID Commons development team funded by Planetwork make any code, which results from this funding, available to civil society institutions such as NGO's, universities and other appropriate public benefit institutions, free of charge under a GPL open source license.

Planetwork's development effort is closely aligned with the goals of Identity Commons, a "chaordic" membership organization dedicated to establishing citizen's individual control of their own identity data through a voluntary, but binding, agreement among all of its membership. Planetwork shares both paid and volunteer development personnel with Identity Commons, which will make the same code base available to its membership, all of whom agree to be bound by ID Commons purpose and principles, under the ID Commons (BSD style) open source license.
