Sandlin's Opponent Lies, According to Newspaper

After redistricting, Tom DeLay had drawn 5 Democrats into tough districts- one of the toughest is Congressman Max Sandlin's district in East Texas. Thankfully, the Republicans are having their own set of problems as their candidate- Louie Gohmert- has done nothing but lie during his entire campaign. The Longview News-Journal (sorry no link) said last week:

(Gohmert's latest attack) at best, is based on half-truths. And, as worded, is essentially untrue. . . the bottom line is that the Gohmert release and the truth follow two very different paths. . .Some individual facts might indeed be true, but that doesn't make the news release accurate . . .

Now that voters have been offered more facts, we believe that the challenger (Gohmert) does them a disservice to pretend that the mud he tossed last week bears anything more than the barest resemblance to the truth”

Gohmert claimed that Sandlin- a moderate, populist Democrat- voted against the Partial Birth Abortion Ban and had a 100% rating from NARAL. Sandlin, a man of deep faith, voted for the ban- one of 12 Democrats in the House to do so- and though in 2001 (when Partial Birth Abortion was not brought to a vote) he had a 100% rating, he has had a 43% rating and then 30% rating in the last two years. Gohmert keeps pounding away at the dead horse, claiming that despite the fact that a quick internet search reveals the truth that Sandlin's votes went the other way. East Texas, as we all know, is not a place that puts up with a lot of nonsense. Something tells me that despite DeLay's best try, Sandliln will still be in Congress in 2005 and beyond!
