JET HIT #1 BUT CANCEL NATIONAL TOUR DATES
JET HIT #1 BUT CANCEL NATIONAL TOUR DATESIt's been a week of ups and downs for Aussie rockers Jet. While Get Born hit the coveted top position on the Australian album charts (their first #1 anywhere in the world), the lads have been forced to cancel the remaining gigs on their national tour due to a "serious family illness". Adelaide and Perth will be temporarily deprived of their Jet fix and considering the success of the east coast dates, including 3 sold-out shows in Sydney, fans will be bitterly disappointed. But an official statement from the band suggested the lads were willing to make it up to their South and Western Australian fans: "It is with great regret and disappointment that Jet announce the cancellation of the final leg of their current Australian tour. Shows scheduled for Adelaide, Dunsborough, Perth and Fremantle will no longer take place as planned due to a serious family illness. The band sincerely apologises for any disappointment caused by this unexpected turn of events. Jet fans have been out in force on ‘Thee Get Well Gone Revue’ and the band intend to repay the support by making up these shows at a later date. Jet aim to tour Australia again sometime later this year and plan to reschedule shows in Adelaide and Perth." If you've bought tickets to the cancelled shows, you can receive refunds from the point of purchase. Overseas fans (who are probably holding their breath right now) will soon find out if the London Brixton Academy show or festival dates will go ahead as planned.

AREA 7 RETURN WITH BIG ISSUE
AREA 7 RETURN WITH BIG ISSUEAustralia's ska legends, Area 7 release their new single Big Issue this week. The boys may have been missing from our radars in recent times but that certainly doesn't mean that they haven't been busy. Before self-exiling themselves in the studio to lay down fresh tracks, the former Aria nominees travelled to East Timor to entertain Australian troops stationed there. In truth, there aren't many achievements left on Area 7's 'things to do' list, considering the band has continually invaded the Australian charts with catchy singles and their Top 10 album, Bitter And Twisted, which sold in excess of 50,000 copies. It's no wonder Area 7 are widely recognised as the pioneers of Australia's ska scene. Get ready for more Area 7 chart action as the Big Issue single finds its way onto national radio playlists and the socially conscious video appears on Aussie televisions. The film clip features Big Issue magazine's famous street vendors as talent. The lads have always tried to deliver special treats to their fans and Big Issue is no exception, featuring the fresh B-side Don't Talk To Me and multi-media component.

THROAT SURGERY SIDELINES CASANOVAS FRONTMAN
THROAT SURGERY SIDELINES CASANOVAS FRONTMANFor the second time this year, a major Australian release has been marred by misfortune. The first unfortunate hurdle was the frightening fall of Rocket Science's Roman Tucker, who was in a coma on the eve of their single release, Sex Call. Luckily, Roman is now recovering from the incident. Now, The Casanovas' Tommy Boyce has been sidelined due to throat surgery as the celebrated rockers release their debut self-titled album. It must be very disappointing for the act, who planned to perform at album launches in Melbourne and Sydney. There have been high hopes that the Melbourne three-piece will still be able to kick-start their national tour in May and it looks as though a speedy recovery is expected, with Rubber Records informing us today of Tommy's commitment to play one song on The Footy Show in Melbourne this Thursday. Apparently Tommy just needs a couple of weeks to fully heal and he'll be ready for the tour. Casanovas fans can breathe a sigh of relief. To check out The Casanovas' tour dates, click here. REGURGITATOR COMPOSE MUSIC FOR NEW ATARI GAME
REGURGITATOR COMPOSE MUSIC FOR NEW ATARI GAMERegurgitator's obsession with video games has resulted in old-school game imagery appearing in their video clips and cover art, but you'd have to think that the boys have finally hit the peak of their preoccupation, with Atari announcing that the Brisbane 3-piece have written music for the new Playstation 2 game, Transformers. The video-clip for the theme song will hit screens this week and Quan Yeomans has composed the music that players will hear as they battle Cyclonus in the Deep Amazon Level. Quan had this to say: "When I saw the names ‘Atari’ and ‘Transformers’ put that close together I just knew I had to be involved.” Modern games always offer a reward for the inquisitive players and Transformers is no different; if players locate the correct 'Datacon', they'll reveal a hidden bonus remix of the theme song. The relationship between local games producers and musicians is a major pioneering breakthrough for the local scene. Let's hope this starts a trend in Australian interactive entertainment.

HUMAN NATURE CLIMB THE ARIA CHARTS (AGAIN!)
HUMAN NATURE CLIMB THE ARIA CHARTS (AGAIN!)Australia's most popular R&B; act, Human Nature, are in the Aria Top 10 this week with their single When You Say You Love Me (#7), from their new album Walk The Tightrope. Both the single and album are climbing the charts as the lads continue in-store appearances across the country. The current run of promotional appearances will prepare the act for a full-scale national album tour later in the year and reacquaint fans. Walk The Tightrope, an album inspired by the Bee Gees, features the act's usual flair for up-beat dance tracks and also features the unreleased Bee Gees track, Love Is Blind; a gift from legend Barry Gibb. With sales of over 1.5 million units, four platinum chart-topping albums, fourteen top 40 hits and a swag of entertainment awards, Human Nature are set to enjoy the most successful album of their career. For a full list of in-store appearance, click here. Walk The Tightrope and When You Say You Love Me are now available on Whammo.

SLEEPY JACKSON AND GELBISON MEMBERS FORM NEW ACT
SLEEPY JACKSON AND GELBISON MEMBERS FORM NEW ACTTwo of the most exciting acts to emerge over the last 2 years have combined forces to create the new act Nations By The River. The story goes a little something like this... The Sleepy Jackson and Gelbison were on tour together in 2003. After a gig in Newcastle, the bands shuffled back to a deserted car park to move on to their next destination. Unfortunately, nobody could find the keys and a frustrating search ensued. As tensions rose, Luke Steele from the Sleepies and Edo Kahn from Gelbison decided to wander of to play their acoustic guitars. There spontaneous experiments spawned the first song of what would become Nations By The River. The rest of the frustrated musos broke the locks on the van and searched inside for the keys but still had no luck, choosing instead the great Aussie pursuit of drinking alcohol. Edo returned at 4am with not only the beginnings of a new album, but also the keys to the van, that he'd found in his pocket. With the inclusion of Gelbison's Dove Kahn, Nations By The River became a three-piece and any chance the trio had, they'd work on new tracks for Holes In The Valley, the act's forthcoming debut. EMI, home to Gelbison and The Sleepy Jackson, have been developing great new talent over the last two years and seem to have that old-school spirit of adventure, evident when John O’Donnell (EMI Australia's MD) told members of the side-project: "well don't just talk about it, go and record it!” If there was any element missing from the new band, the void was filled when Old Man River's Ohad Rein and Edo co-wrote the song Lovers, prompting the group to retain his services. Holes In The Valley slowly took shape with the help of quality guests like Sarah Blasko and Hamish Stuart. The album will be released on June 7. BIONIKWORLD RELOCATE TO EUROPE
BIONIKWORLD RELOCATE TO EUROPEFollowing the success of Bionikworld's Preset 101 and Reset 001 releases, the duo will relocate to Europe as French and German labels get set for local releases of their energetic brand of electronic grooves. The act already has the distinction of breaking records in Australia with consecutive appearances in the AIR (independent) charts. Suffice to say, if you'd like to check them out, you'd better be quick and their current string of appearances may be the last chance you'll get until they decide to return to Oz. The lads will make a quick trip to Sydney and Queensland before packing their bags and having a final 'going away party' in their hometown of Melbourne. The bon-voyage will aptly take place on the Victoria Star Cruiser, so get your tickets fast. It should be a hell of a show. For Boinikworld dates, click here. JET: SOLD OUT SHOWS, DVD AND ABC SPECIAL
JET: SOLD OUT SHOWS, DVD AND ABC SPECIALJet, Australian rock's current flag-bearers, have sold out their national tour, the 'Thee Get Well Gone Revue', leaving a few fans disappointed, but there's consolation in the form of the repackaged Get Born album with a new DVD component. Filmed at London's Astoria Theatre, the 5 live performances on offer capture Jet's potent live energy. Back home after touring the USA with The Living End and The Vines, it seems that Jet may find it hard to shake their new mates, with Chris Cheney joining the band on stage at Melboune's Forum for a blistering version of Elvis' That's Alright Mama, which is on the tracklisting for the Get Born DVD component along with favourites like Are You Gonna Be My Girl and Cold Hard Bitch. Aussies can also get a fix of live Jet when the band are the subject of a live ABC special (7th & 8th of May) filmed in Melbourne, which will be repeated in November to coincide with Australian music week. Meanwhile Look What You've Done, the band's new single, is receiving strong airplay as they play jammed venues across Australia.

BUTTERFLY EFFECT SILENCE CRITICS
BUTTERFLY EFFECT SILENCE CRITICSSometimes the Australian music media tend to collectively put heir head in the sand when it comes to recognising an up-and-coming talent. Any fool could have seen that The Butterfly Effect were emerging as a hard rock force in this country, with sold-out shows and new gigs constantly being added to tour schedules. They're one of the hardest-working acts in the country and relentlessly take their music to the fans, constantly on the move over the last 18 months as they prepared their followers for the releases of Begins Here, then backed up the slickly produced LP with yet another tour. Music journalists can say what they want in reviews, but recent readers' polls have given the industry a shocking wake-up call that indicates The Butterfly Effect are one of the most popular rock acts in the country. The Drum Media's 125,000 readers have voted and the results will have the band's detractors feeling very uncomfortable. Begins Here has taken third spot for 'Favourite Australian Album' behind Powderfinger's Vulture Street and Jet's Get Born. And if that was impressive, The Butterfly Effect have outranked Jet in the category of 'Favourite Australian Artist' to take 2nd position behind Powderfinger. This follows heavy rock/metal magazine, Kerrang's readers' poll that also placed the band at 2nd position for 'Best Australian Band' and #6 for 'Best Tour'. After a lacklustre reception to their debut, it seems The Butterfly Effect have the last laugh and you can watch them do exactly that as they leave a burning trail across Western Australia during May. ABI TUCKER GETS LIVE AND RAW
ABI TUCKER GETS LIVE AND RAWIt's tough to be taken seriously as a singer/songwriter when best known as a television star, but Abi Tucker is determined to convince fans that, unlike the spate of television-powered pop stars, music was always her first passion. Many of the songs on her LP, Dreamworld, were written before her appearances on The Secret Life Of Us as Miranda won her a devoted army of fans. Abi is set to tour extensively to promote the release of Perfect Day, her latest single and to help her rock venues, she's recruited quality personnel from acts like Iota and Killing Time. Fans can expect 'a raw and passionate live show' inspired by her recent trip Byron Bay for Australia's most renowned forum for traditional music: "Having just been to the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival, I feel totally inspired to set on then road with some happening musos". 2004 APRA MUSIC AWARDS NOMINEES ANNOUNCED
APRA will have a hell of a time deciding winners for this year's awards, with a star-studded line-up of local talent being announced as the 2004 nominees. Locals were among the most successful acts to be released in Australia last year, competing strongly against tough overseas competition. 13,000 voters have named the top five songs which are in contention for the prestigious APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) ‘Song of the Year’. 3 out of 5 of the songs named have shown the strength of young talent in this country, being composed by songwriters that are under the age of 25. That says great things for the future of local music.
Jet (Are You Gonna Be My Girl?), Silverchair (Across The Night), Delta Goodrem (Innocent Eyes), John Butler (Zebra) and The Waifs (Lighthouse) have all made the shortlist, which reflects the boom in both popular and independent music during 2003. EVERMORE SCORE NIRVANA PRODUCER FOR DEBUT
EVERMORE SCORE NIRVANA PRODUCER FOR DEBUTKiwi trio, Evermore, made a valuable friend when they met Barrett Jones as the producer accompanied good friends Brad on their Australian tour in 2003. The New Zealand act, which impressed us here at Whammo with their Oil & Water Ep, dropped in on Barrett when they were in the US last year and recorded one track at his studio. The results were so outstanding that Evermore decided Barrett was the right choice as a producer for their debut album. The melodic 3-piece will set up camp in Seattle at the Laundrey Room (studio) over the next 2 months, getting the right support and advice from a man responsible for tweaking the sounds of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. Evermore fans can expect a new single to emerge during May and the album is due for release later this year.

TINA ARENA RECORDS NEW ALBUM, WITHOUT SONY
TINA ARENA RECORDS NEW ALBUM, WITHOUT SONYI wonder how many acts major Australian labels will have left when they shed all their old talent. The latest established star to leave a major Oz record company is Tina Arena, who parts with Sony after 10 years, which included 4 studio albums that generated more than 3.5 million sales. Apparently the break is a mutual understanding and Sony Chairman for the Australasian region, Denis Handlin, was magnanimous in his praise for the Aussie star: "Tina is widely recognised not only as one of Australia's most successful female artists, but also as a tremendous ambassador for Australian music abroad." Meanwhile, the lovely Miss Arena is in the middle of a geographical balancing act as her popularity forces her to split her time between the UK, France and Australia. She's currently recording in Italy and if the split with Sony was troubling her, you certainly couldn't tell from her official statement: "I would like to thank all of the Sony family. Their hard work has made so many great things possible for me over the years. I am indebted to them as I am indebted to all of my fans back home who continue to support me and support my music. Rest assured, there's loads more to come!" Just to prove that point, Tina will release a new album this year: "I'm very excited. Music has always been the driving force of my life and right now I feel very alive."

JEBEDIAH TOUR (IT'S ABOUT TIME!)
JEBEDIAH TOUR (ITWe promised you a Jebediah tour and goddammit, here at Whammo, we're true to our word. W.A's guitar-wielding sensations are back with a new album Braxton Hicks (released July) and their new DIY philosophy has the band brimming with enthusiasm for the coming campaign, which kicks off with a fly-by-night tour of Australian capital cities. Fans in regional areas needn't be despondent; you'll get a full treatment from the Jebs in July. For now, it's time for Perth's fuzzy thrashers to spread the word about their new single First Time, an apt title considering the band has undergone a rebirth of sorts, forming their own label to make a welcome return to the ranks of the independents. From all accounts, it's been an inspiring time for one of Australia's favourite acts. Check out the First Time single when it's released Monday 24 May. Just to whet your appetite for the Jebs quick 'First Time' tour, they'll be joined by Jackson United and all-girl trio The Spazzys, who recently released their new CD, Pacco Doesn't Love Me. BUTTERFLY BOUCHER RECORDS WITH BOWIE
BUTTERFLY BOUCHER RECORDS WITH BOWIEAussie ex-pat, Butterfly Boucher continues to burn a trail across the USA with her eclectic performances as her album, Flutterby raises the eyebrows of critics across the globe. Things seem to be moving quickly for the youngster and rumours suggest that her career is about to get a major boost with the help of ultra-cool veteran, David Bowie. Apparently Butterfly recorded the classic Bowie track, Changes and the cover version was so impressive that the man himself wanted to add his trademark vocals. Changes, now a duet, will be included on the forthcoming Shrek 2 soundtrack. Ironically, the two collaborators still haven't met face to face yet. What a bizarre world we live in.

SPECIAL SENSORY TREAT FOR ADELAIDE
SPECIAL SENSORY TREAT FOR ADELAIDE2003 was a huge year for Melbourne label, Sensory Projects, including some of the best releases of the year from acts like Disaster Plan, The Rectifiers and Symbiotic. So, it should be a huge Saturday night on May 15 when 4 of Sensory's best - The Rectifiers, Symbiotic, Pretty Boy Crossover and City City City - all converge on The Jade Monkey in Adelaide for a huge showcase of the label's talent. This gig comes very highly recommended by Whammo.

AUSSIE SUPER-GROUP RECORD AC/DC CLASSIC
AUSSIE SUPER-GROUP RECORD AC/DC CLASSICIf you could design a 'dream team' of Oz rock, using existing stars, it might look a little something like this: Phil Jameson (Grinspoon), Janet English (Spiderbait), Davie Lane (You Am I) and Kemstar (1200 Techniques). Luckily, this impressive all-star line-up is a reality and they go under the name of: The Jack. A multitude of bands have covered the classic AC/DC track, Long Way To The Top, but my instincts are telling me The Jack will create the best possible tribute to AC/DC when they record that classic track for the forthcoming film, Thunderstruck, which opens in cinemas on May 20. The film follows five friends, all devoted AC/DC fans, who, after a near-death experience make a pact to bury whoever dies first next to their idol, the late Bon Scott. It features Damon Gameau (The Tracker), Callan Mulvey (Heartbreak High), Stephen Curry (The Nugget, The Castle), Ryan Johnson (The Wannabes, Head Start) and Sam Worthington (Dirty Deeds, Hart’s War). The Jack's version of Long Way To The Top is one among many fine rock contributions from high-profile acts like The Casanovas, Killing Heidi and the man himself, Bon Scott with Fraternity performing ‘Jupiter Landscape’. With additional score by David Thrussel and classics from Bonnie Tyler and Europe, Thunderstruck promises to be one of the best Aussie soundtracks for 2004.

SALMONELLA 'DROP EAST'
SALMONELLA *Salmonella Dub have had to change their supports on their upcoming tour. 2 Dogs and The Bird will replace Scribe and DJ D/Form as they have had to pull out due to unforseen circumstances. The ammended dates/information is available on the tours page. Read on for more about the tour...
(posted by Miss Terri: April 28, 2004)

If you haven't seen Salmonella Dub live, you've missed out on some great parties. I can't name any other band that generates such a communal atmosphere of celebration when they perform and sold-out shows at the Metro in Sydney have proven the band's crowd-pulling power. Only their Kiwi cohorts, Shapeshifter, can generate such a huge live drum&bass; sound and as for dub, Salmonella's brass-powered big-band flavour is a tasty as the genre can possibly get. Their welcome return to deeper dub grooves, the One Drop East LP, is still attracting a lot of attention from beat-lovin' folks around the globe and the forthcoming single Longtime is a great example of the fine tunes on the album. The Dub are back in May/June for another east-coast tour with The Resin Dogs and Cornerstone Roots. Make sure you get to one (or two or three) of these gigs to check out the best of southern hip-hop, dub and drum&bass.; Remember that these shows include strong line-ups, so make it to the venue early. JEBEDIAH RETURN WITH 4TH ALBUM
JEBEDIAH RETURN WITH 4TH ALBUMParting with a major label was once seen as a sign of a band's decline. Things have changed dramatically in the last few years and bands are using a DIY philosophy to great effect, including Jebediah, who formed their own label, with Naked Ape Management, in the wake of a long stint at Sony. Finally, after raising the funds, collecting the right personnel and writing new tunes, Jebediah get a chance to make their new label debut with the band's 4th album, Braxton Hicks. Redline Records has already attracted an impressive roster of talent (including: Front End Loader, Adam Said Galore, Big Heavy Stuff) and now the fledgling company finally releases new material by its co-creator, Jebediah. The first sign the new material will be the single, First Time followed by a long-overdue tour that has been described as 'more than extensive'.

DRAB LOGIES BOOSTED BY DELTA
DRAB LOGIES BOOSTED BY DELTALast night, the 2004 Logie Awards reached a new low in production standards, barely saved by its obvious focus on the romance of pop sensation, Delta Goodrem and tennis pro, Mark Philippoussis. The couple graciously endured the spotlight and some inane questioning from compaire Eddy Maguire, to emerge as the clear highlight of the evening's lacklustre entertainment. Australian television's 'night of nights' looked more like the set of a cheap cabaret, sewn together from the remnants of several defunct kids' shows. Ordinary overseas guests like Mel Brooks and Anastacia couldn't lift the profile of the occassion. It's hard to think what the evening would have been like without pop royalty like Delta goodrem and Sophie Monk being among the guests. While Delta missed out on her two possible Logie Awards, the crowd favourite took home another people's choice award. It may have been too much for Sophie Monk to bare, as reports suggest the bubbly pop star collapsed later that evening. Other music-oriented shows to take home paper-weights included Australian Idol and Hi-5. With Logie Awards ceremonies like that one, the Aria Awards must be considered the premier televised awards ceremony in Australia.

Scott Cain, a previous winner of the event has discovered a career in the lucrative childrens’ entertainment market, signing to ABC Kids Music and also being recognised by the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA), who named him ‘Favourite New Subscription Television Presenter’ at a recent awards ceremony. Cain joined the Disney Channel last year and has quickly settled in as a host of AMTV, attracting a loyal following. It's good news for the ABC, who must be hoping their new signing can follow the footsteps of successful label-mates like The Wiggles. Scott will take his music to the people of NSW with a live show, proving that talk of his waning career was simply that: talk.

ROCKET SCIENCE SINGER IN A COMA
ROCKET SCIENCE SINGER IN A COMARoman Tucker, singer of Rocket Science, is in a coma at Melbourne's Prince Alfred Hospital after suffering head injuries. Last Saturday, while celebrating a birthday with friends, Roman mentioned he felt dizzy, then collapsed, injuring himself as his head struck the floor. After being taken to the hospital, Roman was immediately placed in a drug-induced coma. The tragic incident has sidelined the band during a national tour and the release of a new single, Sex Call. Regardless of the timing, the main concern is Roman's condition and fans will all have their fingers crossed for the charismatic performer, who impressed British critics and audiences when Rocket Science played shows in London last year. As would be expected, all plans are on hold. Comments on the Rocket Science site are encouraging: "it was a bit of a worry for 3 hours in emergency but he's expected to make a full recovery". All of us here at Whammo wish Roman all the best. Get well Roman!

DATSUNS HEAD O'S AFTER RECORDING NEW ALBUM
DATSUNS HEAD ONew Zealand's kings of new rock, The Datsuns, have been itching to get back on the road after recording their new album, Outta Sight/Outta Mind (official release date: June 7). If 2003 was a busy year, the boys are planning to tour the world non-stop this year and have made this pledge to their fans: "We are going to do our best to get to every town in every country that we possibly can! Unfortunately, unless we clone ourselves, we can't be everywhere at once. But hang in there people, we're coming..." Kiwis and Aussies have had their chance to check out the band recently, so it's time for the UK and Europe to get another dose of Datsuns action. To whet the appetites of rock lovers, the lads will have their ICA London gig recorded by John Peel and broadcast live on his Radio 1 show. Look out for the new single, Blacken My Thumb and make sure you check Whammo for the long-awaited second LP, Outta Sight/Outta Mind. For The Datsuns international tour dates, click here.

VINES POP HOME FOR A QUICK VISIT
VINES POP HOME FOR A QUICK VISITBeing high in demand as a live drawcard has its disadvantages for The Vines. The obvious downside is homesickness, but Craig Nichols and the lads will get a quick dose of Australia when they return for two shows (Sydney and Melbourne) in May to promote their new Winning Days album. Australia's chart-topping rockers haven't stopped gigging since the release of Highly Evolved and their recent Aussie Invasion Tour, with The Living End and Jet, helped to highlight the depth of talent emerging from Australia. To celebrate The Vines' limited Aussie tour, the release of their new single Winning Days will coincide with the shows, which will surely sell out fast. Be quick.

HIP-HOP TRIPLE-HEADER TO ROCK THE GAELIC
HIP-HOP TRIPLE-HEADER TO ROCK THE GAELICThe best local hip-hop gig in months will be happening at The Gaelic Club in Surry Hills, Sydney on Friday April 23. TZU, The Herd and Good Buddha will be joining forces for a show that promises to attract yet another capacity crowd. TZU's Position Correction album is the finest hip-hop release of the year while The Herd's An Elefant Never Forgets was Whammo's #1 Dance/Hip-Hop album for 2003. As for Good Buddha, if you think you know what to expect from a hip-hop show, you're in for a shock. Their show is an amazing fusion, combining the power of a full funk outfit with lyrical dynamism that makes their shows 'must see' events. Fans will get a treat in the form of new material from their forthcoming second album, Futurhistix. This triple-header is not to missed: Friday April 23, The Gaelic Club, Surry Hills.
