Data East, the Japanese producers of Karate Champ, BurgerTime, Magical Drop and a wealth of other arcade and home titles, has officially gone out of business. The closure notice was written up in today's edition of the Japan National Printing Bureau's daily governmental gazette, marking the legal end of the company as a going concern.

Originally founded in 1976, Data East built a name for itself in the 1980s for quirky arcade classics, including BurgerTime, Bad Dudes, and the Magical Drop series of puzzle games (a perennial office favorite around GamePro). They also released Karate Champ in 1984, which is generally agreed to be the first one-on-one martial-arts game ever created.

The publisher filed for the Japanese equivalent of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1999 and since then they've concentrated on selling off their old game licenses to other companies. Their last original title was a WonderSwan version of pool sim Side Pocket, released on November 1999.

This is a bummer. :( R.I.P. Data East.

One of my faves from them is Heavy Barrel- basically, a futuristic Ikari Warriors with one bitchin' hyper weapon so powerful it can even own the bosses outright.

Hopefully we'll see some "Data East Memorial Collections" or something such released for home systems.

I liked Heavy Barrel a lot. They had a lot of great NES games, actually.
