Infant-Abduction Prevention
NCMEC has been a resource for law enforcement and the healthcare
industry on the topic of infant abductions since1989. The victim
is an infant (birth to 6 months of age) abducted by a nonfamily member
from a hospital, home, or other location. The abductor’s motive often
is to raise the child as her own and may also include an attempt to strengthen
a crumbling relationship with her significant other.
NCMEC maintains national statistics regarding the number and location
of this particular crime. NCMEC staff members provide technical assistance
and training to healthcare and security personnel in an effort to prevent
an infant abduction from occurring in their facility. NCMEC also
provides guidance on how to respond when this type of abduction does occur
and works closely with law enforcement during and after an incident.
