Erythronium americanum L. Commonly called Dog Tooth Violet or Trout Lily. Flowers are distinguished by mottled basal foliage. These are somewhat common in the southern Appalachian range and I am lucky enough to have a patch growing wild in my yard in Pound, VA. This painting is back in my posession after a tour of Eastern Kentucky as part of the 2002 "Images from The Mountains" traveling exhibit sponsored by Appalshop in Whitesburg, KY. The canvas ground was dyed with a variable mix of Procion Magenta, Black and Lapis on a starburst fold pattern. Dyes were applied without scouring to achieve muted tones. Some areas of the canvas were treated with white gesso and others left raw before application of oil paint.
